me a A "A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, December 6, 1994 - 17 SPORTS Malmont Atoms edge Markham In 4-2 decision On Dec. 2, Port Perry trav- elled west for an exhibition game against the Markham Thunder. The teams were well matched and the Malmonts were exposed to the pro-style "dump and chase" offensive ap- proach employed by their oppo- nents. The teams sparred with one another in the first period with- out any major mistakes. Dean Van Camp had our two best scoring opportunities. In the second, Dean capitalized on a shot low to the glove side with assists from Mike LeFort and Jeff Tarbotton. Shortly after, Scott Duncan hit the post on a nice feed from Jeff behind the net. With the Malmonts on a power play, Trevor Weisflock set up Mark Duncan nicely. D'Arcy Stephens was up to all the shots directed at him in goal. Early in the third period, de- fenceman Tim Jones turned aside a three-on-one Markham attack. Then goalie Mike Koury stopped a breakaway and went on to stop two other tough Markham chances. Way to go, Mike! Markham kept pressing and Tyler Houthuys had to make a good poke check to halt another rush. Markham finally tied the score at 1-1 when a for- ward was left all alone in front. To make the trip worthwhile, however, Port grabbed the win- ner by Jeff on a pretty play from Dean and Mike. Tyler was the coach's nomi- nee for "Best Effort". On Dec. 3, the team travelled east for what would turn out to be another tough loss to their nemesis Cobourg league com- petitors. The Malmonts showed some zip in the pre-game skate and took an early 1-0 lead as Justin Moffatt made no mistake on a play from Jeff and Steve Ma- cLennan. Some aggressive Mal- mont forechecking set up that goal. Cobourg caught a break: shortly after for a 1-1 tie. Dean then scored from Adam Moynes and Mike LeFort from a scram- ble at the side of the net. Before the period was over, Cobourg tied things up at 2-2 on a screen shot from the point. Then goalie Mike Koury had to make a nice blocker save on a bullet wrist shot. - Cobourg went ahead for keeps in the second as a forward was once again left all alone in front. Port pressed back and Steve had a good shot from Dean who had circled the net with the puck and made a smart passing decision. Playing gritty hockey, the team limited Co- bourg to almost no other second period shots. Jamie Smith was having a fun experience in his first start of the season as a for- ward and Dane Gray got a dif- ferent look at the game as he played his first game of the sea- son at the blue line. | In the third period, Dean missed on a breakaway and Mike LeFort had a good power play chance. The tying goal just couldn't be found. Cobourg then took advantage of a defensive zone coverage miscue by our for- wards to nail down a 4-2 win. Coach Hutchinson's choice for "Best Effort" was Justin Moffatt. Keep working hard, team, you can beat that Co- bourg squad in the playoffs! The month changes yet things stay the same in the SHL as the Blazers and Chargers re- main deadlocked in first place with the Phan- toms just a single point behind. However, De- cember did bring on a new SHL challenge! Spearheaded by Billy, "Roc" Owen, the chal- lenge is on for all league members to bringin a "canned good" during the next two weeks to as- sist Operation Scugog in their annual Christ- mas Food Drive! The league has always been a leader in com- munity assistance concerning the arena pro- Jects, minor hockey and ringette, so this new challenge has success written all over it! Now let's get to the results for Week 14 in SHL ac- tion. Gamblers vs Aces Game 1 saw the Crandell's Gamblers contin- ue to keep pace with the leaders with a 4-0 vic- tory over the Taylor Aces. Bob Strickert posted the shutout as the Gamblers dominated the game. Glenn McCoy netted a pair with singles to Steve Groves and Mark Decosta. Both Carl Durham and Robert Evans re- ceived two assists while Dave Bourgeois cap- tured a single. The Gamblers continue to move up through the pack each week and a slip by the leaders could throw a new team into the "hunt for first place overall!" Chargers vs Clippers Game 2 had the Monsma Chargers throw a 6-2 beating on the Fitzgerald Clippers. Kevin Dearborn playing in the Clipper net for Billy Eade, saw a lot of rubber as the Chargers were fired up for this one! Jason Warner and Bill Bridge shared a pair of goals each with Tony Oxley and Brad Hurst netting singles. Rick Olaisen chipped in three assists while Dave Thompson had a pair and singles went to John Robertson and Oxley to round out the Charger attack. For the Clippers Larry Pilkey continued to be the team leader with two goals. Single as- sists went to Doug Bronson, Al Sibbald and Harvey Williams. Hawks vs Comets Game 3 proved to be the only tie of the week as the J&D Hawks and the Compton Comets to-end excitement and see-saw scoring to give both teams a well-deserved single point. Sponsor Joe Curran, and Ritchie LeFort had the Hawk goals. LeFort, Doug Suppelsa, Rick Hope and Carl Durward all had single assists. The Comets had replies from Dave Dickson and Bill Weisflock. Ken Davison, Tom Barnes and Doug Bache with yet another, had single battled to a 2-2 tie. This game had lots of end- . SHL winners keep winning assists to complete the Comet scoring. Sharks vs Blazers Game 4 had the crowd assemble to see if the Van World Sharks could upset the "naughty" Harrison Blazers. This proved to be the best ac- tion of the day as the Sharks put on a frenzy. However, a goal late in the third period gave the Blazers a 5-4 victory to remain tied for first place with the Monsma Chargers. Scoring sensation, John Harman, led the Blazer attack with three goals and an assist. Dave Milton and Dave Roth added singles for the win. Darcy Milligan chipped in a three assist performance with Milton and of course, Jim Beatty adding singles. For the Sharks, Phil Cochrane showed his scoring talents with a hat trick while Steve Con- nors had the single. Scott Davis with two assist and Ivan Geer with a single rounded out the Shark scoringin this thriller! Devils vs Phantoms Game 5 proved to be yet another humiliation for the Pizza Delight Devils as the Pineridge Phantoms past them 9-0! The Pizza Boys had a great game against the Blazers last week, but obviously left their hock- _ey talents in the bag to begin December! The Phantom feast saw Bill Van Camp with a "five point performance" due to three goals and two assists. Mike Geer and Fred Moffatt had a pair a piece with singles going to Brian Samis and Jim Fowler. Samis and Sean Fewer added three assists each. Clarence Stephenson had a pair of helpers and single assists went to. Geer, Moffatt, Fowler, Steve Fox and even Shawn Parker, the goaltender, who also posted the shutout! Needless to say, this is one parade that the Devils were glad to see end! Well, the final chapter stays the same once again this week. "Tis the season to be jolly" if you play for the top three, but with playoffs just around the corner, everyone knows that strang- er things have happened in the SHL! Don't forget your "canned goods" for Opera- tion Scugog next week as you catch the action at the following times for Week 15. 6:45 a.m. J&D Hawks vs Pineridge Phantoms 7:45 a.m. Taylor Aces vs Pizza Delight Devils *8:45 a.m. Harrison Blazers vs Monsma Chargers 9:45 a.m. Crandell's Gamblers vs Van World Sharks 10:45 a.m. Compton Comets vs Fitzgerald's Clippers P.S. Will Game 3 finally solve the first place issue? Doormen tie The Peewee Overhead Doors recovered from their loss last weekend to earn a 2-2 tie with the visiting Lindsay squad. The game was an evenly matched affair with both netminders being forced to make numerous stops. The "Bs" had some new faces in the lineup as coach Shawn Parker called up Billy Carr, Wade Ritchie, Matt McGarry and Jeff Harrison for the game. . # Right off the top of the game, Port netminder Chris Thomp- . son blocked a hard shot off the face mask and Scott Brownson, John Bacon and Kam Cooper had a good scoring chance shortly after that. Kam Cooper did get Port Perry's first goal minutes later when he tipped in a rebound with assists going to Joel VanCamp and Chris Jones. Murphy Irvine who played a strong game on defence un- leashed a hard shot from the point while on a Port power play but the Lindsay goalie made a good save. Blue liners David Jus- tynski, Grant Hooker and John Burnett all worked hard to clear out Lindsay players fromin front of their own net. However, at the end of the first period Lindsay managed to break through and scored to end the first period tied 1-1. The second period saw continued action at both ends of the ice. Goalie Chris Thompson was called upon to make some great saves. At 11:16 of the second, Russell Brown put Port Perry ahead 2-1 when he flipped the puck past the falling Lind- say goalie on a perfect pass from Wade Ritchie. Chris Jones also had an assist on the goal. The second period ended with Port in thelead 2-1. Unfortunately though, the Doormen could not hang on as Lindsay scored the tying goal at the end of a Lindsay power play opportunity. Despite continuing to press, Port Perry could not recapture the lead as the game was curfewed with about two minutes to go. Coaches choice for best effort went to Russell Brown. The Overhead Door Peewees travel to Campbellford next weekend to compete in their first tournament. Good luck!! Fi- nally, Congrats!! Shawn & Kim. MoJacks hang on for a 3-2 victory The Port Perry ModJdacks hung on for the 3-2 victory in what was a rough match against the visiting Little Britain Mer- chants Sunday night. Little Britain got on the board first when James Partner slid a KEITHLESLIE shot past Rick Hutchinson in the MoJack goal. But the MoJacks came back and took advantage of a power- play to tie the game at 1-1 at the end of the first period as Keith Leslie converted a pass from Mike Pigeau. Captain Gavin Cochrane also picked up an as- gist on the play. The second period saw three goals and the remainder of the scoring for both teams. Hutch- inson faced 16 shots while Mer- KEVIN VIVIAN chant netminder Don Fleming faced 25. Kevin Vivian and Steve Laird scored the ModJacks just two minutes apart. Trevor Bremn* er, Jamie More, Jeremy Ross and Scott Heasman each picked up assists on the goals. Little Britain did manage to get one back when Shawn Mur- ray connected on a pass from Chris Cairns. The match was a rough one, which saw plenty of stick-work on both sides. The result saw several players, including Mo- Jacks Jeremy Ross, for a second period scuffle, and Cochrane, for a fight in the dying seconds of the game, tossed from the match. The ModJacks are in Uxbridge this Friday night (December 9) for a match up with the Bruins. Next home action for Port Perry 18 Sunday, December 11 when the Bobcaygeon Bullets will be in town. Game time is 7p.m. start. Sports reports continue on Page B18
