LEN yy "A Family Tradition for 128 Years" Shooting survivors meet a month after fateful night Port Perry get-together Friday was like a meeting of old friends' By J. Peter Hvidsten Port Perry Star Like old frie od meeting for the first time in years, shooting vicitims from last months rob- bery at the Bank of Montreal met in Port Perry on Friday. The four men were in a upbeat mood as they shared a few laughs and talked about the unforgetable incident that instantly bonded them for life. Durham Regional Police con- stables Warren Ellis, Mark McConkey and Paul Mooy along with bank manager Alan Knight met at the Halibut House in Port Perry, accom- panied by Community Laison Inspector Reg. McIntyre and Anne Crawford, coordinator for Victims of Crime Services. Mr. Knight was shot in the leg by one of two men robbing the bank on Oct. 20 and the three police officers were wounded as the robbers fled the scene. Mr. Knight told the Star he has returned to work and is now able to walk without a cane. While he is progressing favorably, he is still taking physiotherapy for his leg. Constable Ellis, whose face was sprayed with bullet and glass fragments, said he's phys- ically feeling well and hoping to return to work about March or April. He was scheduled to meet with the surgeon at Sunnybrook Medical Centre Monday to have his progress assessed. Constable Mark McConkey, who received severe wounds when shot in the face, said the wires were removed from his jaw last Friday. He now has limited movement of his jaw. He said he was "very impa- tient and would like to get back to work as soon a possible." Constable McConkey travels to St. Michaels Hospital in Toronto every two weeks to meet with his surgeon. Paul Mooy, who received extensive damage to his arm when hit by a high-powered bul- let told the Star his arm is get- ting stronger, but he still has no movement or control of his fingers. He said surgeons plan to per- form a muscle transfer or trans- plant from his leg in about six months. "It will be along road to recovery, but my progress has been unbelievable in the past five weeks," he said. Const. Mooy undergoes ther- apy five times a day in his home and at hospital in Oshawa twice a week. Inspector McIntyre said the shooting victims wanted to get together to show the community they are recovering well. He said the efforts of the officers and other shooting vic- tims have been "incredible" and they have a very "upbeat attitude." He attributes their recovery and attitude to the overwhelm- ing support of local residents and leaders of the community. Mayor Howard Hall of Scu- gog and Mayor Gerri Lynn O'Connor of Uxbridge, Inspector Nancy Desjardine, Sgt. George Scott and Det. Joe Kerr all joined the officers and Mr. Knight Friday for lunch. Insp. McIntyre said "all this support shows them that being a police officer isn't just a job." Chief Trevor McCagherty had planned to join the officers Friday, but due to a prior com- mitment was unable to attend. Insp. McIntyre said the Chief is kept informed of the officers progress and has indicated any- thing the officers or their fam- ilies need will be taken care of. Debra Ann-Taylor, the fifth person shot in the robbery, was unable to attend the meeting.
