(From page 5) husband Ron, I think." A woman she played bridge with knew a modelling agent, and even though Bunty had no plans on modelling (she grins at this notion), she thought the agent could point her in the right direction. When Bunty called, the agent told her immediately there was nothing for her, but she was about Bunty's age and they shared an interest in community theatre, so they began chatting. "I had just won the award for Busybody so I happened to mention it." Suddenly, the agent took Bunty very seriously. Within her first year, Bunty had completed six speaking parts and earned her ACTRA card. She was in business. A friend and fellow actor, John Kozak, had told her, "If you do 10 auditions, and you get three parts, you're doing well." Bunty managed to snag a part on her first audition. "I thought, hey, this is easy!" The job was a TV commercial for Bell. She thought, "I'm on my way -- fame, fortune, travel -- and my first job was in Unionville," just a hop and a skip away from her home in Markham. In fact, when the director wanted a fan and there wasn't one on location, he sent Bunty to bring one from home. She was paid for the use of her fan, for her trip to go and get the fan, she was paid for her acting, plus she was able to keep her costume. "I thought, 'What a business this is!" After Bell (where she played a lonely lady, sitting on a porch, knitting and waiting for the phone to ring), she has done many commercials for companies like Andres Wines, Robin Hood Flour, General Motors (the Lumina), Chrysler, Air Miles and Toys R Us. Her TV series credits include a TVO production called Write On, King of Kensington, Riel (she played Annie Oakley), A Gift To Last (with Gordon Pinsent), and The Littlest Hobo, where she met one of her favorite stars, Donald O'Connor. "I was so impressed with him, I was so glad to meet him." The meeting came about because it was pouring rain that day. Bunty, who was playing a crossing guard, was soaked to the skin and was happy to see a crew member walking towards her with an umbrella. "I thought, here they are, coming to keep me dry. And it was for the dog, Hobo!" Instead of sharing the dog's umbrella, she was invited to dry off in the Winnebago ("No matter where you are, there's a Winnebago"), where she had a pleasant visit with Mr. O'Connor. Another of her favorite performers is Jean Stapleton. They appeared in two films together, Bury Me In Niagara, and A Matter of Sex. At work on the second movie, the two women were taking a break, sitting not too far away from each other. Miss Stapleton kept sneaking glances at Bunty and Bunty would smile, until, "She finally looked around and said hi." When she realized where she had seen Bunty before, and who she was, Miss Stapleton exclaimed, "You're the one with the funny name!" Bunty's given name (she admits with a shudder) is Isabelle, but she has been known as Bunty ever since she was a baby, when her mother nicknamed her. "I tell people it's a nickname for a fat, cuddly baby, and that's still what I am," she laughs. While her doctor wants "er to lose weight, "My agent says, don't lose too much!" Her looks are important in the looks-obsessed world of acting, where a director often chooses performers on the whole basis of looks -- especially in commercials where Bunty sometimes isn't even asked to read. Things are different in community theatre circles, where Bunty, naturally, is a big star. Since she has moved to Scugog Island from Markham, she has performed in The Crucible, Arsenic and Old Lace, Harvey and Shadowalkers. She says the quality of Borelians theatre is top-notch. "Very often, I see better plays around here than I do downtown. I'm always saying you don't have to go downtown to see great theatre." Likewise, you don't have to go downtown to see one of Canada's finest performers. You can see her on TV, on stage with the Borelians, and at the movie theatre. Oh, and you can also see her at the grocery store. The next time you see 'that face', you can say, "Hi", to the wom- an with the funny name. 111 Simcoe St. N., Oshawa, Ontario L1G 4S4 10.25% Government Guaranteed ROBERT J. Acquisition of the new equip- ment is consistent with the numerous other upgrades at the hospital, which has under- gone a huge expansion with the construction during the past year of the Stephen B. Roman wing. The bill for the expansion has been huge, and the com- munity has answered repeated calls by the hospital for contri- butions, said the hospital foun- dation's Debbie McGarry. "The hospital has a lot of good friends and supporters, and that family keeps increas- ing," she said.
