BE ET BAN IO PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, December 13, 1994 - B13 "A Family Tradition for 128 Years" SProrTs Doormen struggle On Dec. 10, Port Perry Over- head Doors Peewees travelled to Campbellford to compete in their first tournament of the season. Somehow, we lucked out with a leisurely noon start against a team from Tweed. Our Port boys started out the game in high gear and shortly into the first period Scott Brownson put the Doors on the scoreboard as he banged in a shot off the goalie on a wrapa- round. Matt MacMaster and John Burnett got the assists. Unfortunately, as the period and eventually the game wore on, our game plan fell apart and we ended up being out hustled for the rest of the game. Tweed tied the game at the end of the first and despite be- ing scoreless through the sec- ond, Tweed scored the winner on a power play late in the third. Ryan Fraser was outstanding in the net as he kept the score as close asit was. This loss put us on the "B" side of the tournament and on Sunday we travelled back to Campbellford for a not so lei- surely 9 a.m. start against All- Saints from Peterborough. Our doormen came to play this game despite the early rise and played aggressively from the opening faceoff. Right off the top Kam Cooper had a good rush to the net. However, a lapse in defensive zone coverage resulted in Peter- borough getting the first goal. Joel Phoenix, Grant Hooker, David Justynski and Murphy Irvine worked well in killing off a Port penalty to stay within one. Port Perry tied the game at one all when Murphy Irvine whistled a hard shot from the point and Scott Brownson picked up the loose puck, giving it to Kam who fed Joel Phoenix who made no mistake in putting itin the net. } The Doormen moved into the lead minutes later when again pointman Chris Jones shot a low hard wrist shot on the net and Matt MacMaster flipped in the rebound. It's nice to see the boys using the pointmen when on an offensive attack. It often produces results. Netminder Ryan Fraser came up big numerous times when under fire and made a huge save on a Peterborough breakaway to preserve the lead. The rest of the game, our "Bs" managed to keep on the offence instead of resting on their lau- rels and scored two more goals. Scott Brownson stole the puck in the offensive zone and the re- bound from his wrist shot was tipped in by John Bacon to put Port ahead 3-1. Joel VanCamp also got an as- sist. New team member Wade Ritchie scored our fourth goal when he flipped in the puck on a goal mouth scramble. Assists by Matt MacMaster and Russell Brown. Ryan Fraser registered the win. Joel Phoenix was coaches choice for best effort. This win put Port Perry into the semi-finals on the consola- tion side against another Peter- borough team - "St. James." spending three hours waiting for this game to start must have taken some of the zip out of nur team. The Doormen started out very slow and were penned in their own zone for most of the first two periods. Peterborough had scored four goals (two on power plays) by the midway mark of the third period when our boys decided to Join in the game. Again in this game our Doormen discovered the advantages of playing with all five players in the offensive zone as the rearguards were in- volved in all three of Port Perry's goals. Grant Hooker scored our first goal on a shot from the point to put us on the board. John Bacon got the assist. With the score 4- 1 coach Shawn Parker pulled goalie Chris Thompson in favor of an extra attacker but unfor- tunately Peterborough scored on the empty net to goup 5-1. The Doormen were undaunt- ed though as Peterborough took a penalty and an extra attacker was put on again. Murphy Ir- vine scored on a blistering shot from the point on a nice feed from Joel Phoenix. With the score 5-2 and only a minute and 38 seconds left in the game the Doormen continued to press. Scott Cunningham and Reid McTaggart worked hard to keep the puck in the Peterborough end. After forcing a faceoff deep in the Peterborough end, the puck came back to left guard Chris Jones who snapped a pass to Murphy Irvine on the right point and again Murphy scored on a hard shot through traffic. This brought Port Perry to within two goals. There were only 53 seconds left on the clock when a Peterborough defender put his hand on the puck in a goalmouth scramble. This set up a penalty shot attempt by Kam Cooper, who made a val- 1ant effort to put the team up by one more. Unfortunately, the goalie stopped the shot and the game and the tournament was over for our boys. Chris Thompson played a good game in net and saved the team more than once. Despite not advancing fur- ther, the team had a good tour- nament and perhaps learned a few things alongthe way. =~ Next home action is Satur- day, Dec. 17 at 8 p.m. against Stouffville. We owe them one guys!! Come on out and help cheer uson!! Legionaires win big in Mariposa Legionaires 10 - Mariposa 2 It was to be another winning night for the Legionaires on Sunday. Our boys met up with the Mariposa Peewees in Little Britain. Just a minute and a half into the first period Derek Campbell beat the Mariposa goalie assist- ed by Greg Bruton and Nick Pe- lyk. This was followed 28 sec- onds later when Jeff Ashton carried the puck from in front of our goalie all the way down the day and Lindsay on Sunday. Pearce Novice team 'unlucky in Uxbridge On Tuesday, Dec. 6, Port Perry Pearce Auction Major Novice team travelled to Uxbridge for their second meeting of the sea- son. Uxbridge won 4-1 with Port Perry's only goal scored by Chet Martin on a pass from Lucas Fraser. On Friday, Dec. 9, the Auctioneers hosted a well played game against Cobourg. Scott Honey and Kurtis Wagar were solid in net for Port Perry, both coming up with some good glove saves. The defence, Gordon Smith and Justin Koury, Justin Shinn and Ryan Hnatko, made some good defensive plays cutting down Cobourg's scoring chances. Kevin Robins played a particularly good game. Not only did he pick up the assist on Pat Lewis's goal, but he had several good shots on net himself. Tyler Weisflock was also effective on his wing. Chet Martin handled the puck well and with the help of his wingers, Jordan Froats and Lucas Fraser, had a couple of good scoring chances. Teddy Howarth, Joey Lane and Alex Ni- colau skated hard with Teddy and Joey managing to break through Cobourg's defence for some shots on goal. The Cobourg goaltender was also solid in net and despite Port Perry's good effort the final score was 2-1 for Cobourg. Good luck to the boys on their game in Peterborough Satur- ice and whistled a big one into the net assisted by Aaron Chambers and Braden Tarbot- ton. Derek Campbell scored again just six seconds later as- sisted by Chad Lance and Bra- den Tarbotton. Mariposa got a point on the board at 6:21 of the first. The Legionaires started the scoring off in the second period with Derek Campbell racking up his second hat trick of the year at 5:44 of the second assist- ed by Chad Lance and Braden Tarbotton. As space is limited the rest of the second period went like this: 5:11 - goal by Chad Lance assisted by Braden Tarbotton and Derek Campbell; 3:54 - Greg Bruton unassisted. Mariposa opened the scoring in the third period but the Le- gionaires followed up at 11:27 with a goal by Jeff Ashton, as- sisted by Braden Tarbotton and Derek Campbell, 7:14 Nick Pe- lyk assisted by Ryan McQuade and Jeff Ashton, 3:36 Steve Wy- gerde assisted by Greg Bruton and Jeff Ashton and with seven seconds left Ryan McQuade scored assisted by Nick Pelyk and Chris Skerratt. Great goaltending by both goalies Chris Monsma and Mike McLennan, and good de- fensive work by Sean Jeffrey, Matt Caldwell, Aaron Cham- bers and Jeff Ashton. Final score Port 10 - Mariposa 2. Our next game Friday, Dec. 16 at 9:15 against Lindsay. Way to work boys! ------ shift. power play goals. Early morning start for final Atom game The final scheduled house league hockey for this year came at 6 a.m. last Saturday morning for Laurentian Bank and Lake Scugog Lumber. Rising that early in the morning doesn't seem to bother some kids as the Bankers pocketed one on their first Stormy Wootten converted a pass from Pierce Jones to stake Laurentian to the early lead. Chris Gloster added another to end the period the Bank up two. The Bankers came out very strong in the second period with the line of Derek Ellicott, Greg Hunter, and Trevor Doan capi- talizing on some fine passing to notch one. Graham Ingram added one unassisted and the second period ended with a frus- trated Scugog Lumber trailing 4-0. The Lumber team never gave up though starting the third period with renewed vigor. Kevin Lucas made a fine play at this blue line to block a rush by Bankers defenceman Gary Gar- ret. Scugog Lumber got their first marker less than four min- utes into the period: It was a Brad Gianini goal assisted by Don Campbell and Brandon Haugen. Tyler Lee also scored in the third for Scugog. It was generally a well played game for both teams with only two penalties called both of which resulted in Final tally was Laurentian Bank 6 - Lake Scugog Lumber 3. Midget Islanders After a week off to concen- trate on school work, this sports writer gets back on track with the Port Perry Canadian Tire Midget Islanders. They have played a lot of hockey recently, some of it good and some of it, well...let's say... not up to par. Way back on Sunday, Nov. 27, the Islanders travelled to Ops Township for a 7:45 p.m. start. Port chose to be a follower rather than a leader and played only to the pace of their opposi- tion and came out with a 3-3 tie. Kevin "Boomer" Gray got Port on the board first as he wound up from his familiar spot on the blue line and put a three-by-one inch puck into a four-by-two inch space in the top corner. He was assisted by Trevor Smith and Matt Phillips. After Ops squared things early in the sec- ond period, Mark Brownson took a cross-ice pass from Jason Logan and blasted the rubber at the net. Matt Phillips cleaned up the rebound and put Port in the lead. After Ops tied things again, Jason Logan banged home a loose puck from Tim Fitzpatrick and Kent Taylor. Port thought they had the win- ning goal, but a gutsy Ops squad, as you may have guessed, posted the final tally and things were left undecided. The next night, the Islanders were in Little Britain to take on Mariposa. Port put together a solid effort and survived a mar- athon, winning 5-4. Scoring for Port in this game were Mark Brownson, Eric Lucyk, Jon Ja- mieson, Matt Phillips and De- vin Blair. These guys had the touch on this night and provid- ed enough offence for the de- fence to work with. The game was slightly de- layed at 12:16 of the second pe- riod as one "Mariposian" was slightly disturbed with a call from the men in stripes. He de- cided it might be best to take it out on the penalty box door to provide ample rest for both teams. Phillips, Matt Brown and Kent Taylor played set-up men this night as they each collected an assist. The Islanders were more than pleased with their performance. Two night later, on the last day of November, the Islanders hosted Beaverton and came up with a very, very poor effort, los- ing to the tune of 3-1. The only offence for the good guys in this game came from Eric Lucyk, assisted by Matt Brown and Jon Jamieson. Boy, that line has been clicking well lately! : The turning point in the game came at 3:45 of the third period. With the score tied at one, a Beaverton player scored an off goal when from the hash marks and clanged the puck off some part of the net's frame. The referee claimed the puck had entered the back of the net and came di- rectly out, much to the disbelief of Brian Bickmore, who was having an excellent night in net, and the rest of the Islander team. Anyhow, the goal stood and it proved to be the winner. On Dec. 4, the Islanders trav- elled north to Bancroft to take part in the town's annual tour- nament. Port's first competition came from Markham and the Is- landers were able to eke out a close 5-4 victory. Things did not look pretty af- ter the first frame as Markham had built a 2-0 lead and eventu- ally a 3-1 lead heading into the last period. Port showed a lot of guts, however, and scrapped back to earn a win. Jon Jamieson scored Port's first goal, assisted by Matt Brown and Kent Taylor, and it was Devin Blair who started Port's comeback with a solid ef- fort from Jamieson and Matt Phillips. Goals were then notched by Matt Brown, from Eric Lucyk, Adam Hunter on a solo effort, and Jamieson again with the winner, from Jason Lo- gan. Jamie Trick provided solid goaltending to preserve the vic- tory. Port's next game was against hated Millbrook, and this time Port wasn't so lucky. "The Brook" tallied five markers in all to Port's one. Port seemed to get out-bumped and out- hustled and it cost them a spot in the A final. Kevin Gray got the lone Port goal with a sweet and lovely move, rushing in from the point. I think the goal- - ie's glasses might have been a little foggy after that one. Brian Bickmore did all he could to keep Port in the game but he didn't get much support. Port moved to the consolation side of the touney and played in the B final against the host Ban- croft squad. Overtime was needed to decide this high- flying offensive battle with Port' being a little outmanned and losing 6-5. With only 11 skaters, Port did well to keep things tight. e wound up™
