"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, December 20, 1994 - 13 -- SPORTS Legionnaires games exciting Saturday night the Legionnaires travelled to Belleville. This was one of the most exciting and hard fought games of the Legionnaires season so far. Belleville opened the scoring at 5:48 of the first period after some pretty fast end to end ac- tion. Port Perry responded quickly after, at 2:35 of the first when Nick Pelyk blew one by the Belleville netminder assisted by Brad Johnston and Jeff Ashton. Port suffered a ma- or penalty early in the second period, but the ort boys went into overdrive to keep Belleville out of Port's end and Brad Johnston carried the puck up the ice and we could see goal number two but he let the shot go and all we heart was "Ping" as the puck hit the post, but Brad did not settle for that, and after a nice pass from de- fenceman Sean Jeffrey, Brad went head to head with the Belleville goalie again but this timein it went to put Port ahead by one. Port kept the pressure on but Belleville tied in the lead. up the game at 2:09 of the second. Fast pace con- tinued into the third period with some heavy duty checking being dished out by both teams. Sean Jeffrey made a nice pass to Matt Caldwell who carried the puck down the ice to behind the Belleville net where Derek Campbell was right on the spot in front of the net and "Bingo" Port went ahead by one. The game was far from over when Port suf- fered a major five minute penalty with 5:04 left in the game. With Belleville having the man ad- vantage the Port boys had their work cut out for them to kill off the final five minutes. All the practicing and hard work paid off as the Legionnaires did not let their lead go. Mike McLennan had his work cut out for him in goal. He made some awesome saves to keep his team This was one fabulous game boys. Congratu- lations to all of you. "A" for effort to the entire team. Final score Port Perry 3 - Belleville 2. A Ey MS Ea XS I -- A RSE NE A Techstar wins tournament On Wednesday, Dec. 14, the Techstar Bantams faced off against Uxbridge. On their last meeting, the Techstars walked away with an easy 8-0 win. But this time the Techstars played brutal (and that's the only way to describe it). Despite the first two periods of pathetic play by the home team, they managed to win 5-2. J.P. Copeland opened the scoring from Scott Sanderson and Ian Parliament. Uxbridge tied it up less than a minute lat- er and things started to fall about. The Techstars were get- ting what coach Dave Jamieson calls "Suttonitus". The Techstars regained the lead early in the second when Dan Lyons scored from Sander- son and Copeland. Uxbridge again wasted no time tying it up. Late in the third, the Tech- stars took the lead again, when Dillian Weber got his first of the game from Lyons and Ryan Puckrin. The flood between the second and third periods did some good as the Techstars woke up slight- ly. The Techstars dominated the play more in the third. They added some insurance when Weber and Puckrin teamed up on a two-way passing play and Weber put it away. Puckrin rounded out the scor- ing late in the game, assisted by Weber and Lyons. On Saturday, Dec. 17, the Techstars went to Cannington for a tournament. In game one, the Techstars faced off against a Peterborough church league team Immaculate Conception. The first period saw goalie Doug Short and the Immacu- late goalie stand tall. Immacu- late scored first early in the sec- ond period. With the final seconds of period two ticking away, Ryan Puckrin passed it out from behind the net to Dave Gainey who scored to tie it at one. Gavin Baxter also assisted on that goal. | The game winner was scored halfway through the third by Scott Sanderson, assisted by Dan Lyons and Dave Kammin- ga. The Techstars walked away with a 2-1 win. In their second game, they were up against a tough Sun- derland team. Sunderland took the first lead late in the first pe- riod. Early in the second, the Techstars tied it up. Troy Campbell scored on a shot from the point. That goal was assist- ed by Gavin Baxter. The Techstars took the lead late in the second. Campbell got his second when he put a one- timer to the top corner. Dave Gainey assisted on that one. Sunderland tied it up 2-2 at the end of the second. Midway through the third, the Techstars took the lead when Adam "Bullet" Brain tipped a shot from "Flippy" Dave Kamminga. A little more than a minute later, Dave Gainey added some insurance, assisted by J.P. Copeland. Dan Lyons rounded out the scoring with a goal, as- sisted by Baxter and Puckrin. The Techstars were heading to the championship game. In the championship game, they were up against Minden. The two teams traded goals late in the first. Dave Gainey got the Techstars on the board, assist- ed by Copeland and Weber. The Techstars took a lead about a period later when Campbell scored from Weber. With one second left in the sec- ond, Ian Parliament made it 3-1 from Copeland and Gainey. They added one more in the third when Sanderson scored, assisted by Gainey and Camp- bell. Minden scored one with just under five minutes left and then another with two seconds left toend it 4-3. Doug Short was awarded MVP for his outstanding goal- tending. The Techstars are now on a seven-game win streak, so come out Wednesday night at 7:30 and see if they can extend it to eight. they skated to a 4-2 win. and Ian Shrigley. vor of the Panthers. assists also. 4-3 win. Panthers win 4-2 The Port Perry Panthers Midget A team, sponsored by Lake- side Gold and Hockey, took on their counter parts from Ux- bridge at the Scugog Arena on Dec. 5. The team always fairs well against their arch rivals and tonight was no different as In the first, Ian McCready snuck in from the blue line and gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead. Assists going to Shane Norton In the second "Rent-A-Bantam" Shane Norton increased Port's lead to 2-0 as he was set up by Ian Shrigley. Jeremy Geer adds to the Panthers lead as he blasts one from the point on a nice passing play from Kenton LeFort and Craig Laird. Early in the third, Kenton LeFort furthers Port's lead to 4-0 as heis set up by Jay King and Daryl Bourgeois, Uxbridge man- aged to net a couple late in the third to finish the game 4-2 in fa- On Sunday, Dec. 11, the Panthers tracked off to Lindsay for a makeup game cancelled earlier in the season. The first period was full of action but both goalies were being very stingy in al- lowing any goal, as the first ended 0-0. In the second the skaters finally solved the goalies, as both teams scored two goals each. Scoring for the Panthers were Craig Laird and Jay King. Kenton LeFort picked up assists on both goals with Ian Shrigley and Chris Drury picking up single The third was just as entertaining as Jay King scored early to give the Panthers the lead. Kenton LeFort picked up his third assist of the night, with Daryl Bourgeois also assisting on the goal. Lindsay tied it up later in the period and then man- aged to score the winner with 22 seconds left on the clock for a The Panthers action continued on Monday, Dec. 12 at the Scugog Arena for a game against Peterborough. The Panthers really played a well disciplined game as they totally frustrated the 'Petes.' They jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first on goals by Matt Hobbs and Craig Laird. Jeff Clarke and Greg Thompson drew the assists on both goals. Peterborough scored The third was all Panthers as they finished the game with two more goals for a convincing 4-1 win. Jay King and Greg Thompson scored the goals with Daryl Bourgeois, Kenton Le- Fort and Ian McCready picking up the assists. The guys are really starting to pull together and Warren, Ryan and Garry have been working hard to this effect. 'm sure we'll be seeing many more exciting games in the weeks to come as the Panthers get ready for the road to the playoffs, with some tournaments lined up and of course regular season play. Youth Lob ball for Cartwright It seems like ball season has just ended and here we are in the throes of winter talking about the upcoming season. For those of you who are not aware of it, minor ball is a year-round planning process. Cartwright Minor Ball executive are cur- rently making plans for the 1995 season. As well as continu- ing to offer hardball and soft- ball, the executive are planning to add a Youth Lob Ball division in the upcoming season. Sheila Shortridge, along with Len Fudge, is currently in the planning process of setting up the new division. Fudge recent- lv attended an executive meet- ing to advise the executive of various ideas that could be used in the organization and running of the division. Many of the rules from the adult leagues will be utilized, though some will need to be adapted to fit the younger age group. The new division will be offered to youth born between, and including the years 1976 to 1979. Thus, in order for a per- son to be eligible to play in the division, they must be 16 to 19 years of age during 1995. Fudge stated that he is con- cerned about the lack of activi- ties for this age group in this area. With the inception of lob ball for this age group, it will give the older youths an oppor- tunity to expend some of their boundless energy and also an excuse to get out of the house. The addition of this older age di- vision should push CMB regis- tration to over 400 players this coming season. mean that the organization has had a growth rate of over 100 per centin three years. CMB will be announcing reg- istration in February, so before long it will be time to begin thinking about ball again. Somehow, the winners in the hardball division were not rec- ognized in a press release last season. That being said, we will do so now. In the Peewee divi- sion, Causeway Cougars made a clean sweep winning both their division and tournament. Raglan Industries were the di- visional winners in the Midget division. The hardball teams play teams from Port Perry through an affiliation with Scu- gog Baseball. Malmont Atoms end their slump On Dec. 17, our Malmont Atom As got a monkey off their back as they endured for a 5-4 win over Peterborough. Mike Koury started between - the pipes for Port and was given the "Best Effort" award by the coaches. Trevor Weisflock made a nice wrist shot to open our scoring with an assist by big rookie Jamie Smith. Goal number two was by Adam Moynes on a nice setup after circling the net by centre Mike LeFort and a helper by Dean Van Camp. Our second period score was by Justin Moffatt on a scintillat- ing rush after receiving a pass from rugged defenceman Scott Duncan. We went up 4-3 on Jeff Tar- botton's goal with linemates Trevor Lance and Justin assist- ing. Peterborough kept pace, however, and tied the score late in the third. It looked as if we would have to settle for one point, until, with just over a minute left in the game, Dean Van Camp connected on a high wrist shot from the high slot. Adam Moynes and Mike LeFort assisted. The night before, our "Green Machine" Malmonts hosted the Belleville lads and as expected this wouldn't be the game for us to turn our fortunes around. Belleville were up 3-0 after one period as they took advan- tage of a turnover, good fore- checking and a goalmouth scramble. Early on the Mal- monts skated with them but we were terrible in controlling the . puck on our two-man advan- tage power play. In the second period, Mal- mont goalie D'Arcy Stephens made several fine glove saves. Tyler Houthuys and Steve Ma- cLennan were working hard to limit traffic around our crease. Our only score of the game came in the second when Trevor Lance coolly kept control of the puck behind the Belleville goal on a delayed penalty call and he spotted defenceman Tim Jones cruising into the slot. Tim rifled the puck low to the glove side to ruin the Belleville shutout bid. Belleville scored several more in the third period to end up with a 7-1 win. Our offensive highlights in the third were a breakaway by Dean and a two- on-one chance by Jamie and Mark Duncan. Jamie just missed on a wraparound chance. Dane Gray did some good work in taking pucks off Belleville forwards in his defen- sive corners. The Malmont squad also were treated to a little hockey education over the weekend as they scrimmaged against a huge free-wheeling team called The Dads plus Diane and Tere- sa". Also, they had their Christ- mas party this weekend and thanks go to the Van Camps for their bravery in hosting this group of "angels". Next home action is Friday, Dec. 23 at 8 p.m. when we host the Stouffville Clippers. Come on out and cheer uson!' | This would ..
