COMMISIONER OF WORKS Solina W.I. will receive $34G grant Gord Mills, M.P.P. for Dur- ham East announced last Fri- * day that the Solina Women's In- stitute is receiving $34,765 to make the Solina Community " Centre Hall accessible for sen- iors and for persons with disa- bilities. The funding will be applied to ~ the cost of installing a lift, con- structing a sloped entrance and two accessible washrooms, and relocating the library due to the installation. "By making this facility more accessible to people with disa- bilities and senior citizens, more people will be able to take an active part in community ac- tivities," said Mr. Mills. The funding is provided through the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship's Access Fund. In the past five years, the Access Fund, in partnership with non- profit organizations, has pro- vided over $20 million to create access to consumer advocacy or- ganizations, employment coun- selling and vocational training centres, women's shelters, com- munity based mental health and addiction programs, and community facilities. Other organizations in Dur- ham East that have received Access Fund grants include Windreach Farm in Ashburn, St. Paul's United Church in Bowmanville, Trinity United Church in Bowmanville and the Anglican Church of the Ascen- sion in Port Perry. 'Service seeks volunteer help Durham Community Be- - reavement Services is looking for empathetic and compassion- ate individuals who would like to learn how to be supportive to someone who has suffered a ma- jor loss through death. Grieving is a process that one " has to work through, and that often takes a lot of support and time. We will teach you through training how to listen effective- ly, so you may help an individu- al work through this process. Topics will include: normal grief and its stages, abnormal grief, communication skills and re-entry skills. A commitment of two hours per week for one year is required. Training will begin on Wednesday, Jan. 25 to March 1, 1995 from 7-9 p.m., at North- minster United Church in Oshawa.
