"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, December 20, 1994 - 3 Developers facing hikes | for charges in Scugog By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star Scugog Township Administrator Earl Cuddie has recommended that the munici- pality raise the charges it levies on new development. In a letter to councillors last week Mr. Cuddie said the devel- opment charge on single family dwellings in the township ought to be boosted to $4,075 per unit from the current level of $3,965. Mr. Cuddie said in an inter- view the recommended charge reflects cost of living and con- struction cost index hikes dur- ing the past year; they would be in place for new development occurring in 1995. "There's a window of oppor- tunity to review the value of development charges" based on those numbers, he said. Development charges havg been in place for a couple of years after the provincial gov- ernment passed legislation requiring municipalities to impose levies on new develop- ment. Funds collected from developers are dedicated to recreation and infrastructure needs. The legislation also requires a review of the charges in 1996, and adjustments according to market factors. The Scugog administrator said the munici- pality is attempting to phase in the increases gradually rather than hitting developers with a whopping increase in '96. He added the minimal municipal hikes likely won't hit developers as hard as the inclu- sion of a school board develop- ment charge on projects. Scugog would be keeping in step with other area municipal- ities by implementing the hikes, he added. Uxbridge and Brock have made adjustments recent- ly as well; Brock's new charge per detached residential unit is $4,400, and Uxbridge charges $4,200 per unit. The Nestleton woman was left feeling angry and disillu- sioned after snowmobilers pulled up to her McLaughlin Rd. home in broad daylight last Monday (Dec. 12) and rode off with three cans of gasoline. Mrs. Sweetman was away from home working during the morning and discovered 'the theft when she returned around lunchtime. She found snowmobile tracks leading up to her home and away from it, and upon further investi- gation, found that thieves had entered the garage, tak- ing cans of gasoline. It appears one can was drained into a snow machine at the Sweetman home and two others were taken out into a field where they were dumped into another, she said. The two cans taken from the property were tossed in the field and left there. Mrs. Sweetman is angered because she would have gladly helped someone whose machine was out of gas -- if they'd asked. "The gas is nothing," she said, adding she was prompt- ed to call The Star after read- ing of a couple of snowmobile thefts in Cartwright the pre- vious weekend. "It's just the fact that somebody violated my privacy. "I don't have a problem helping people," she added. "It's just the dishonesty that really bothers me." She said that she locks her house when she's out now, and will have to take further precautions in the future. She doesn't like having to adopt that mentality, but feels it may be necessary after last Monday. "It's ridiculous to have to take these measures, but if this is happening, what have you got to do to protect your- self?" she said.
