4- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, December 20, 1994 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" It's Christmas, finally ...Lights are back on at Line 3 home By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star Christmas has come again to Scugog. Friday night, Kay Hilton and her daughter Judy Reid threw the switch to bring back to life their display of lights, music and moving figurines which has delighted people here for the past three Christmases. Darkness descended on their Line 3 home a couple of weeks ago, after a fire in the house Mrs. Hilton shares with her daughter and family. A smoldering attic fire, believed to have been caused by wiring, burned out the ceiling in the upper half of the house where Judy lives with her hus- band Terry and their kids, and required extensive repairs; among the repairs was rewiring of the house. That required a visit from an Ontario Hydro inspector, who slapped an order on the family to take measures to bury the cables which carry power to the display that is set up on their sprawling lawn. A dis- traught Mrs. Hilton sat with Judy throughout the night, and wondered what could be done. Costs, she learned after making a few phone calls, would be enormous. "We had two sleepless nights," said Mrs. Hilton. "We decided we were going to go ahead with it. We can't afford it, but we're going to go .ahead with it." The family got to work. Terry rented equipment and startea on the trenches that would have to snake around the lawn for the cables, and an electrician was hired to come in and run the wire and conduit to the var- ious displays. They worked feverishly through the week -- with renovations continuing inside their house as well -- and Friday night, after receiv- ing an okay from Hydro inspec- tors, had a backhoe on the site filling in the trenches. "The front-end loader was here last night until 8 o'clock," said Judy Saturday afternoon. "While he was covering the hole, people were walking around." The important part, though, is that the lights went on Friday night. And the people came. "The people come in hordes to see it, and they come for miles," Mrs. Hilton said by way of explanation for the flurry of activity and cost. "We were running around like crazy fools, "Anybody who rips up their lawn the way we ripped up our lawn to bury cables must be crazy fools." But it paid off when the fam- ily realized they were once more able to provide a spectacle many people in these parts have adopted as part of their Christmas tradition. "It's Christmas, and it's the people of Scugog," Mrs. Hilton said. "They all expect it now. "Everybody was just ecstatic last night as they walked around." it's finally Christmas for Ka It's Christmas at last! y Hilton and her daughter Judy Reid, who have had to shut down their popular display at their Scugog Line 3 home for the past couple of weeks while improvements ordered by an Ontario Hydro inspector were carried out. the work was completed and, at last, the li of thousands of lights, music, and moving lawn at the family's home.
