8- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, December 20, 1994 ' "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" ~~ Police Report Thieves scared off by 'alarm in bungled break-in Durham Regional Police are investigating a bungled break- in in Port Perry last week in which thieves attempted to cut wires in a plaza and then were scared off by a burglar alarm. Police said that around 4:30 a.m. Thursday (Dec. 15) an electrical room at the plaza on Scugog St. at Water St. was broken into and a number of Bell Telephone wires cut, appar- ently in an attempt to shut down alarms. The would-be thieves then pried open the front door of the M & M Meats shop and entered, setting off an audible alarm. The thieves fled the scene before police arrived. A check of the premises by the owner revealed nothing had been stolen, police said. Also last week, the Cango gas bar on Simcoe St. in the Ridges was hit once again by thieves, the fourth time in a month and a half. Thieves pried open a window of the gas bar kiosk using a crowbar and made off with a quantity of cigarettes, as well as 1 5 i bis - : 2 snack food and some lighters, police said. ; "9 a. 1 en ; The break-in is believed to have occurred overnight Dec. 12. Vehicle destroyed by fire Durham Regional Police and local fire crews were called out last Wednesday (Dec. 14) after a vehicle caught fire and burned in the township. Police said the 1981 AMC Jeep pick-up was being driven eastbound on Regional Rd. 21 in the Mast Rd. vicinity when the exhaust system overheated and caught fire. The vehicle sustained extensive damage to its interior and rear wheels as well as the engine compartment, police said. There were no injuries. 3 4% - Lemme see that turtle!
