RL Overhead Door Peewees The Peewee Overhead Doors gave themselves a Christmas present on Friday, Dec. 23 in Port Perry when they all fat- tened up their scoring stats by pummelling the Oshawa Black Hawks 10-3. The scoring action got started right after the opening horn when Scott ~~ Cunningham Jammed the puck in on the short side with assists by Kam Coop- er and Wade Ritchie. Oshawa retaliated with a goal of their own shortly after but that is all they would get for awhile. Wade Ritchie, who has been playing great hockey, scored Port's sec- ond goal with help from Matt MacMaster and Scott Cunning- ham. Chris Jones did a Christ- mas favor for his buddy Ryan in net, when the puck flipped be- hind Ryan on the goal crease and Chris jumped in to clear the puck to the corner. The Doormen took a 2-1 lead into the second and it was here the scoring flood gates opened. John Bacon scored the Door's third goal unassisted when his shot rolled up and over the goal- ie's shoulder. Shortly after, John Bacon scored his second goal on a nice play by Joel Van Camp who held on to the puck behind the Oshawa net and * passed it out at the perfect time. Joel Phoenix was also credited with an assist. The Doormen went up 5-1 when pointman Murphy Irvine unleashed a shot from the blue line and Scott Cunningham was there to tip in the rebound for his second goal of the night. Wade Ritchie also got a helper. Kam Cooper scored Port Perry's sixth goal on a power play when again Murphy fired irom the point and Kam deflect- ed the shot. Wade Ritchie had an assist. Scott Cunningham scored his third (a hat trick) on a backhand shot to give Port their seventh goal. Assists to Kam and Wade. At the end of the second, Port took an 8-1 lead when Kam scored his second goal of the night with assists to Joel P. and Scott C. : Oshawa fought back to score two goals in the third frame but the Doormen added two more of their own to bring the score to 10-3. Port's ninth goal was s.ored by John Bacon, his third (a hat trick) from Joel Van Camp and Joel Phoenix. The tenth goal was scored on a power play when rearguard Chris Jones as- sisted on Kam Cooper's third goal of the game - another hat trick!. Blueliners David Justyn- ski, John Burnett and Reid win one and tie two games McTaggart were using the body well to keep the Oshawa attack- ers off stride. Russ Brown showed good hustle when fore- checking and backchecking. Ryan Fraser got the win be- tween the pipes and John Bacon | was the coaches' choice for best effort. Earlier in the afternoon, the Doormen had travelled to Ux- bridge to play an exhibition game. The last time these two teams met, the Doorman had a terrible game but this time they skated with Uxbridge and took a 3-1 lead into the third period. But Uxbridge didn't want to be embarrassed on their own pond and came back to score three goals in the third. Port scored one more to end the game in a 4- 4 tie. The goal scorers for Port were Joel Phoenix from Matt Mac- Master and Wade Ritchie from Scott Brownson and Kam Coop- er. Port's third goal was by Scott Cunningham who finished off a beauty play in which Grant Hooker fired from the blue line after a perfect cross-ice pass from Chris on the other point. On the fourth goal, practice drills paid off when Chris Jones Turnto Page 15 'Standings tight at the top in SHL Twas' the best of times and likewise the worst of times in the SHL during the past holiday "Christ- mas Special!" On one hand, we saw the excitement of the season lead to game fever, while on the other hand someone chose to spoil the Christmas flavor by stealing from fellow league members during Monday's final game! Hopefully, the guilty party will realize that your peer group has their suspi- cions and yes, eventually you will be found out and exposed to the league membership! Enough of the negative, let's focus on the 1994 results to date for each team, as the playoff picture comes into focus with just five weeks of action yet to go! Harrison Blazers - 28 points Believe it or not this team has been able to take on all challengers during the past 18 games to re- main in first place from the opening game back on Sept. 11! This weekend saw a 7-4 victory over the Clip- pers coupled with a 2-2 draw with the Hawks prov- ing that the Blazers are determined to live up to the "Grovie Pick" and take first place honors come Feb. 5. Ken Harman continues to play great in the "cage" while brother John adds the necessary scor- ing punch! Don't forget that Darcy Milligan also has the "golden touch" and Jim Beatty has found the "Fountain of Youth" to keep the Blazers in con- tention for league honors during the past four months. Minor setbacks such as the "Harrison Barbecue" have been handled in stride and the team has ral- lied to give sponsor Dave Harrison, the best season et! y Pineridge Phantoms - 28 points In true Phantom form these Pineridge boys vaulted into a first place tie with the Blazers with a 2-1 victory over the Aces and 3-0 decision over the Clippers, this weekend. The Phantoms have been waiting in the wings during the last few months and given the opportu- nity, were able to show their strength to take a share of first place with the Blazers to begin the 1995 portion of the season! Everyone agrees that Shawn Parker in the net is a bonus to the Phantoms success but perennial scoring threats Bill VanCamp and Fred Moffatt have had a hand in the team's success to date! Let's not forget that Brian Samis is having a great year and team rep Lee Steeves has the defense "tuned," to give the Phantoms a strong perfor- mance against all contenders! Monsma Chargers - 26 points The "electric company" had a minor power short- age this weekend with a 1-1 tie to the Devils and a 3-1 defeat at the hands of the Gamblers. Although they have temporarily dropped out of first place, look for a strong "surge" in 1995 to shoot for the top! This team has a strong defense in front of net- minder Don Card and scoring champ Bill Bridge still shows his scoring talents game in and game out with the support of "super fans" Mr. and Mrs. Bridge! Jason Warner and Jim Duncan continue to put the points up on the board to give this team a bright outlook for sponsor Jack Monsma in the "playoff pursuit!" Crandells Gamblers - 23 points This has become the team to watch in the past few weeks! Although they lost to the Hawks 3-2 on Saturday, they came storming back te trounce ihe Chargers 3-1 on Monday to stay within reach of the leaders as 1995 approaches! Robert Evans has been a towering force on every team he has ever played on, and together with Carl Durham, Ken Jeffrey, Mark Decosta and Bryan Norton, this team is set to provide the possi- ble first place upset come January! Glen McCoy has found the range in the past few games and this 'riverboat crew" is ready to handle the rough going from any squad! J&D Hawks - 21 points The Hawks finished the 1994 portion in fine form with a 3-2 victory over the Gamblers and a 2- 2 draw with the Blazers! Ray Gibson in net is showing shades of "Scrooge" as in past Junior C days, and the Hawks look to Ritchie LeFort and sponsor Joe Curran to provide their scoring punch' Fans will recognize Carl Durward, Dave Jack- son and Ed Olsen as a strong blue line corps and some will even wonder why the Hawks aren't in first place already?! Watch for Lane, Hope, Callery and Kinnunen in the 1995 summaries to give this team the New Year's "boost" in 1995! LeFort can score at both ends of the nnk! Pizza Delight Devils - 18 points The Pizza boys continue to play "500" hockey and lead what has become known as the Tier Two" division! A 1-1 tie with the Chargers. and a 3- 3 tie with the Comets this past weekend, have players and fans wondering which Devil team will emerge in 1995? a, Granted, the injury to goalie Doug MacSween has had the team trying to adjust to new personnel between the pipes, but watch for the strong defen- sive group of Smith, Stevenson, Dunn and Ash- bridge to encourage sharp-shooters Foote and Mackey to greater heights! Don't forget the Gera- tol Gang of Smart, Driscoll and Beveridge can also give the competition fits come the new vear' Note: the Driscoll finesse on Monday! Fitzgerald Clippers - 13 points This team dropped a 7-4 decision to the Blazers. and a 3-0 campaign to the Phantoms this weekend but the word around the league is that the Clippers are "due" soon! Larry Pilkey is a "scoring machine" on each shift, and "Roc" Owen together with Kelly Lee providing a strong defense' Look for Doug Bronson, Derek Fitzgerald and sponsor, Carl Fitz- gerald, to provide the team leadership in 1995 to bring this team together for a great run to the playoffs! Don't forget that Harvey Williams is no stranger around the net as the "Green Machine" gears up for the new year! Compton Comets - 12 points The comets were out of orbit as they lost to the Sharks 2-1, but rebounded on Monday to tie the Devils 3-3. This team can never really counton 100 per cent attendance, but has the potential to put a string of victories on the board' Barnes and Moase anchor the defense in front of Wayne Lown in net. If Weisflock, Dickson Edwards and McQuade get hot on the forward lines, the Comets could sail into a 'new dimension" come the 1995 schedule' Team rep Doug Bache is on a "personal best" pace and the return of Brian Burns to SHL action this season make for exciting action in each Comet game! Taylor Aces - 8 points Each year is brand new in the SHL and the Tay- lor Aces as "Kings" in 93-94 have found the "Jack syndrome" for 94-95 to date! Although the points have been few this season, they narrowly lost to the Phantoms 2-1 before defeating the Sharks 6-2 in their most important game of the season to date' Turn to Page 15
