"A Family Tradition tor 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, January 10, 1995 - 17 Sr D> PORT PERRY STAR ORTS MoJacks sweep home and home series easily by David Stell Just try and keep the Mo- Jacks away from the net. I dare you. Uxbridge, Bowmanville, Little Britain and Bobcaygeon have tried recently, and only the Little Britain Merchants have had any success. But instead of denying Port Perry any goals, Little Britain Just went out and scored more. That's how 1995 started for the ModJacks when they came up on the short end of a 7-5 score in Little Britain last Wednesday. The year turned around, howev- er, when Port Perry travelled north to Bobcaygeon last Fri- day. They weren't about to be out- scored in this one as the Mo- Jacks got their first win of the new year by outscoring the Bul- lets 10-1. Mike Pigeau led the team with a hat trick while Steve Laird and Keith Leslie pitched in with two goals apiece. Adding singles were Ian Titterton, Scott Heasman and Todd Dennis. The ModJdacks returned to Port Perry Sunday night for a return match-up with the Bul- lets and picked up where they left off in Bobcaygeon. They skated to an easy 5-0 win and completed the sweep of the Techstar takes home and home series, picking up four valuable points which will help them in their fight with Georgina and Uxbridge for second place. Also, after strug- gling before Christmas, the Mo- Jacks have averaged just over six goals a game in their last five contests. The frustration that strangled the team through most of December is over. In the first period of Sunday night's game, the ModJacks spent a large part of their time getting in the Bullet netmind- er's face, outshooting Bobcay- geon 17-3. But even with all of this hard work, they were only able to produce one goal for their efforts. Chad Kearns opened up the scoring at the 8:22 mark of the period with centre Jason Cochrane and Ryan Ridgeway helping out and drawing assists. Surprisingly, that goal held up for the next 30 minutes with no scoring until the third period. That was when Leslie made it 2-1 with Todd Dennis and Todd Byers draw- ing assists. Leslie continues to lead the team in scoring and is currently fighting for third Turnto Page 18 its final match On Jan. 4, the Techstar Ban- tams suited up for their final league game. Their opponents were the Oshawa Black Hawks. The first period saw some great goaltending by Doug Short, as the offence was strug- gling. Dan Lyons got the Tech- stars off to a 1-0 lead with a goal, assisted by Ryan Puckrin and Scott "Cannon" Harper. Late in the period, Oshawa tied it up. Dillian Weber gave the Tech- stars a 2-1 lead early in the sec- ond, assisted by Ian Parliament and J.P. Copeland. Less than a minute later, Oshawa tied it two all. The two teams traded goals late in the period with the Techstar goal scored by Lyons, assisted by Weber and Cope- land. The score was 3-3 going into the third. Oshawa scored two goals ear- ly in the third to take a 5-3 lead. With less than six minutes to go, the Techstars rallied. The first goal was scored by Dave "Gretz" Gainey from Weber and Scott Sanderson, to make it 5-4. The "Cannon" Scott Harper made it five-all with a shot from the point off a faceoff, from Puckrin and Lyons. Puckrin scored the game win- ner with 43 seconds to go when a pass intended for Gavin Bax- ter was deflected in by the Oshawa goalie. The goal was as- sisted by Baxter and Lyons. In the final seconds, Doug Short made many saves to pro- tect the lead. The Techstars' league record was 12-3-1. team. scheduling. ing part. Malmont Atom As upset Belleville On Jan. 7, Port Perry Atom A reps competed with 11 other teams from around the province in a Newmarket AA tourna- ment. The team played much more intensely and smartly overall on the day and succeed- ed in winning two of their three games including a particularly sweet upset over their nemesis league opponents from Belle- ville. . They opened with a 4-1 win over the Ajax Knights. In the first Justin Moffatt found the net on a pass from behind the net by Trevor Lance. Dean Van Camp scored on assists by Mike LeFort and Adam Moynes. Ajax scored on a power play for their only marker. Tyler Houthuys and Tim Jones did some good penalty killing on another short-handed situation. In the second, D'Arcy Ste- phens was called upon to make a big save after a "cough-up". Dean scored the insurance marker on a strong individual effort. Rookie Jamie Smith hus- tled to the net looking for re- bounds...that always makes coaches happy! The only third period score was by Adam on a rebound off Dean's initial shot while Ajax was shorthanded. Port killed off two more penalties with nice hustling shown by Trevor Weis- flock and Jamie. With the benefits of lots of ad- renalin from this win, the Green Machine played gutsy hockey to beat Belleville 3-2 for the first time this year. The boys played tough in the first period and limited Belleville to just one first period shot on a two-on-one play where the goal post helped D'Arcy in our net. The Malmonts took a 1-0 lead in the second when Mike LeFort stole a puck and got it ahead to Adam who passed to Dean on a two-on-one. Dean deposited the puck under the crossbar. Mark Duncan and Trevor Lance were full value for determination when on the ice. Belleville tied the score at one halfway through the third on a screen shot. Twenty-three seconds lat- er though, Port went ahead again as a puck was deflected off Adam's skate, with Dean as- gisting. The fans were on the edge of their seats by now, as Belleville got a power-play goal to tie the score again. The trip to Newmarket was worth it, how- ever, as Trevor Lance was the hero as he scored the winner with just 15 seconds on the clock. He drilled a wrist shot: over the goalie's shoulder after two good passes by Justin and Jeff. Nice work by the "rookie" line and a good morale booster for the club as a whole! Most of our adrenalin must have been spent against Belle- ville though as the team played tentatively in the offensive zone and looked disorganized in the defensive zone in their third game of the day against a charged-up squad from Strat- ford. The result was a tough 2-1 loss which bounced us out of the tournament. The teams exchanged goals in 'the first period. Stratford broke the ice as a player was left un- molested at the side of the crease. Seconds later, Dean tied it as he circled the net with the puck and scored on a wrist shot from the faceoff dot. Steve Ma- cLennan played gamely on the blue line despite beingill. In the second, Trevor Weis- flock couldn't control the puck to take advantage of a yawning net. Justin had a good chance off a pass from Jeff but overall the Malmonts were sputtering and couldn't create any luck. Despite a late third period pow- er play opportunity and our goalie on the bench, we weren't able to even the score. All in all, it was good to see that win over Belleville and per- * haps the team will switch to high gear full time now as playoffs are just around the cor- ner.
