As of midnight Jan. 1, the toughest anti-smoking law in North America came into effect, making it illegal for Ontario drug stores and stores with in- house pharmacies to sell cigar- ettes and tobacco products. The new law also brings stiff er penalties to those selling the product to minors. Anyone con- victed of selling to a minor faces a fine of $2,000 for a first offence and up to $50,000 for subse- quent offenses, as compared to the $50-$500 fines under the old aw. The new NDP law, pro- claimed November 30, did meet some opposition from pharma- . cists and drug store chains. One partner in a chain of five Toron- to-areastoresis fighting the leg- islation in court. The legislation only effects one store locally, as Bruton's Big V had to take cigarettes off the shelves last week. The legislation will have little effect on the Big V store, as it had plans to stop selling the product at some point anyway. "The new legislation just sped PORT PERRY STAR CLASSIFIED AD DEADLINES MONDAY - 12 NOON RE CREST! uN & it up," said pharmacist manager Doug Brown, of Bruton's Big V. He said the store has been in- volved in a program to reduce the sale of tobacco over the past five to 10 years to put them- selves in a position where they reduced their sales to the point where they could voluntarily stop selling the product. "Professionally speaking I think it is a good thing. I saw it as kind of hypocritical to sell to- bacco in a health care facility," he added. As for the legislation itself, Mr. Brown said he is unsure of its effectiveness, by banning as drug stores pull cigarettes sales in drugstores but allowing themin corner stores. As for the store's sales, he said the loss of tobacco products will not be a great blow. "It was a very small percent- age of our sales anyway," he added. Guardian Drugs is not really affected by the new law, as the Queen Street pharmacy stopped selling tobacco prod- ucts on its own about four years ago. "We felt it was a conflict. We made the conscious choice to discontinue selling cigarettes," said co-owner Dora O'Connor. a Over 400,000 graduates recommend Young Drivers of Canada NEXT COURSE STARTS | ST.
