4- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, January 10, 1995 Lumina, Monte Carlo lead the way By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star General Motors officials have pronounced 1994 a huge success after posting an 8 per cent increase in sales over the previous year. Sales of cars in December were on par with the same period in 1993, capping a year that saw monthly reports from the auto manufacturer boasting of sales on the rise. A highlight of the year was the continued success of the Chevrolet Cavalier, which for the fifth straight year cap- tured honors for being the best-selling car in Canada. The popular model's 1995 edition is expected to continue to be one of Canada's favorites, GM predicted. "We are very pleased with our results in 1994," said Tom, Mason, vice-president of mar- keting at GM. "Sales have rebounded, GM posts 8 % hike in. sales for 1994 and we view the 8.4 per cent increase over last year as a significant improvement, and a reflection of the improving economy." Consumer feedback about new and improved product lines has been positive, said Mr. Mason, adding that com- pany officials are optimistic that GM will have another successful year in 1995. In the 1994 calendar year, GM sold 409,708 vehicles, an increase of 8.4 per cent over 1993's totals. Truck sales were strong -- up 17.8 per ent with 164,473 units sold -- and car sales were up 2.8 per cent, with 245,235 sales. Leading the surge in sales were the Lumina and Monte 'Carlo, selling 213 per cent more than 1993, and the Chevy Blazer and GMC Jimmy, posting numbers 188 per cent higher than the pre- vious year. By Kelly Lown Port Pert Star Scugog Council has granted the organizers of the Snow Flake Festival $1,600 and waived the fees for the rental of the Latcham Centre for the Jan- uary festivities. Organizers Dave Goldberg and Rick McCoshen asked for the grant to cover hydro costs to keep the area lighted during the nightime. Organizers are not asking for any funding for the sled dog races, which are being run in conjunction with the event. The Snow Flake Festival ice sculpture demonstration is ex- pected to cost $13,500 to put on, with more than $10,000 already being donated in cash and ser- vices and an additional $2,000 raised through fundraising. Mr. Goldberg also informed council that Bill Lishman, who is creating an "Icehenge" ice sculpture, wishes to locate his sculpture about 80 metres out from the pier on Lake Scugog. With Queen Street as the main route to the downtown core, he felt the visual effect would be greater. : This year's ice sculpture dis- play promises to be larger than "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Council approves $1,500 funding for Snow Flake Festival directors last year's as 15-20 sculptures are being planned. Other attractions for the day were also verified, including a trolley service, which will see horse and buggy rides leave Port Perry High School, travel along Bay and Cochrane Streets to the downtown core and back to Rosa Street. Several aspects of the hall are still in question though includ- ing the color of the building, the landscaping area in front of the building and the parking area and the curbing and ashphalt will be held off until spring. When phase one is complete tenders will be accepted on the remaining project. Several councillors expressed their concern that local labor be used when possible in the build- ing of the hall and were assured the intent was to use local labor as long as their prices were com- peitive with others. "So far it has been 100 per cent local content (labor) to date," Mr. Clarke told council. The building of the hall was split into several projects to al- low local contractors a chance at the work, instead of tendering the entire project to one compa- ny. Doing it individally allows the local contractor a "good op- portunity to make a bid, than if the whole builidng was being tendered," Mayor Howard Hall said. The tenders will be opened later this week and Mr. Clarke urged contractors to check local papers for advertisements for when they will be accepted. CORRECTION An article on the sale of com- mercial land in Port Perry that appeared in the Jan. 6 edition of the Weekend Star incorrectly identified Bill Tripp as owner of the so-called Conway proper- ty. Mr. Tripp and his wife Leona are mortgage holders on the property, not property owners. The Star regrets the error.
