"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, January 17, 1995 - 21 ro SProrTs Plenty of action in Novice house league The Novice House League games over the past few weeks have been fast-faced and fun to watch as every player is work- ing hard to improve his or her skills. Over the holidays there were some games played through the week. On Jan. 2, Haugen's de- feated Re/Max by a score of 7-2. Matthew Kamminga scored three goals to lead his team to the win. Joseph Kozlir sky scored one goal and picked up an assist. Matthew Charron picked up two goals with Ste- phen Guthrie picking up the lone marker. Justin Cottrell and Jeremy Morrison picked up assists for their efforts. Scoring for Re/Max were Scott Lennox with a goal and an assist and Brady Gray with the assist go- ing to Chris Kehoe. In the other game of the day, Van Camp and Port Perry Printing battled it out with the Van Camp team coming out on top 5-4. Scoring for Van Camp were Jesse Mischtian with two goals, Tyler Martin with a goal and an assist and Mark Verness also with a goal and an assist. Ryan O'Leary picked up a sin- gle while Steve Groves picked up two assists and Matt Menear picked up one. On Jan. 4, Haugen's squared off against Van Camp in an- other close game as the Van Camp team came out on top again 6-4. Mark Verness scored two goals and got an assist. Jesse picked up two goals and two assists. Darryl Copithorn and Blake MacKenzie each notched a goal while Tyler Mar- tin picked up an assist. Scoring for the Haugen's squad was Matt Kamminga with three goals. Joan Taylor picked up a goal and an assist while Scott Stone picked up an assist. The next game of the day saw the Port Perry Printing team come out flying and caught the Re/Max team a little flat to win the game 5-0. Kellen Jackson picked up the shutout as he played very well between the pipes. Justin Sanders picked up a hat trick as well as an assist. Good work, Justin. Brad Lay- zell scored two goals and picked up two assists for his hard work. Adam Smart and Taylor Meek- ing both picked up two assists. Good passing and team work really paid off for the Printing team in this one. The first Saturday back to regular schedule saw Re/Max take on Van Camp in a very ex- citing game. Both goaltenders for this one played superbly. Alex McKay for Van Camp and Scott Lennox for Re/Max had outstanding games. There was no scoring in the first period. Re/Max scored just 30 seconds into the second peri- od on a pass from inside the blue line by Kristy Ashton to Jesse Mullins who skated down the ice to put the puck between the pipes. Van Camp answered back with three minutes to goin the period to tie it up as Jesse Mischtian scored with the as- sists going to Grant Ranieri and Troy Johnston. The third period was exciting as both goalies were called on to make some pretty good saves. With a little over two minutes left to go in the game, Jesse broke away from the crowd to score on a hard shot with the as- sists going to Darryl Copithorn and Matt Menear. Final 2-1 for Van Camp. In the second game of the day, Port Perry Printing sharpshoot- ers were flying high as they scored nine goals. Leading the way was David McGarry with two goals and an assist. Brad Layzell picked up two goals, Justin Sanders a goal and two assists, Bill Britt, Craig Sim- monds and Mike Redman each picked up a goal and an assist. Tim Oullette rounded out the scoring. Other point-getters for the game were Adam Smart with three assists, Taylor Meeking, Mitch Truax and Brent Meeking with one each. Haugen's had their own share of sharpshooters as they scored four goals in this one. Jo- seph Kozlinsky, Matt Charron, Matt Kamminga and Reid Har- ris all picked up a goal each. John Taylor picked up two as- sists with Chris Clarke, Ste- phen Guthrie and Russell Lee each picking up a single assist. Great action-packed game, guys. Country Style Bantam action Way back on Jan. 4, the Port Perry Country Style Bantams, went on a tour to Port Hope to play some hackey. Yes, hackey. The sticks were flying in this one. You were sure to be laying on your back if your head was down! Shawn Hnat- ko ripped our first, top shelf with a wrist shot. Kids, you could learn a lot watching this guy. I Just won't say what you'd learn. Just joking TKO. You're a player. Adam Smith assisted Hnatko's lovely goal. : Adam Hobbs scored next, wouldn't you know on a breakaway! Funny thing is, Hobbsy was more interested in a hit he'd just thrown than he was in his pretty goal. Hobbsy caught, Port Hope's, Wesley Adams in the trolley tracks, and threw a hip check like I'd never seen. Hobbsy sent the poor kid flying over his back and into flight. What a hit. Froats and Laird as- sisted on Adam's goal. Rob Murphy scored next, stepping onto the doorstep from behind the net. Murf lifted the puck, straight up, into the top corner, a back hand. What a beauty goal. Heffern and Norty assisted on this amaz- ing power play goal. The final score was 3-1 in our favor. Lenny played great in goal stopping 54 blasts. 7 We were in the Meaford tourney on Jan. 7 and 8. We first played against Keswick. These guys should be entered into Wrestlemania rather than hockey tournaments. Has anyone ever seen bigger goons? As soon as we went up 1-0, they started sticking us. Norton even took some lumber right in the chicklets! The final score was 4-0. Scorers were Strickert, Froats -and Norton, who had two slappers that went in high. This put us in the A pool, which meant that our next game was the next day at 1 p.m. The Grizzly they call Savage put on a clinic for the younger fans in this one, folks. Those of us who stayed at the Hospitality Inn had some se- rious time to kill. We just hung around, played Sega and bonded. What a time! ; The next game was against our cocky, conceit- ed friends from Collingwood. This team from Collingwood has a great bunch of guys. They re- mind of our other friends from Cobourg, very mannerly. We did come up short, though. The fi- nal score was 4-2, on an empty net goal. We were short two men, but that's no excuse. Blades said "We played the first two periods alright, boys. Playoffs are coming, we have to be ready to play under any and all conditions. Just because we were missing two guys, doesn't mean we're not a team. We just have to pick up the pace a little bit. Come on boys. Don't get down, but we have to realize as a team that we have to work as a team to win hockey games." Blades always seems to come through with one helluva chalk talk. This week's delayed player profile is on team policeman, John Froats. Froaty always seems to be able to come through with a crunching body check when the time was right. After slamming a Port Hope player, and Jay Strickert into the boards, Strickert realized that the shaft of his Easton Aluminum hockey stick had been snapped in two. Jay was furious until he saw that it was Froaty who had accidentally mashed his stick. Froaty is a solid tough guy, who's a physical force on the ice. Man oh man, have I seen fear in opponent's eyes when they see John rushing down the wing. A player did mess with Johnny once....once. Froaty has scored 21 goals and added 33 assists this year slotting him near the top of the league's leading scorers. Playoffs are here and tickets for the Country Style Bantams are hot. Get them while you still can. The third game of the series is at home on Friday, Jan. 27. Lindsay is the opposition in the first round. All's I know is that the guys are pumped, and ready to play. It's sure to be great hockey and entertainment on the side. Come on out. Sharks take a bite out of first With the league vacation over and the weather looking more like spring, it was time for the SHL to begin its "annual race to the playoffs!" The re- maining four weeks in the schedule have always proved to be interesting and this week it was the Van World Sharks who have been struggling dur- ing the season, bringing the Pineridge Phantoms back to reality! Comets vs Hawks Game 1 saw the Compton Comets come to life to down the J&D Hawks 3-1. The Hawks have been soaring lately, but those Comets "clipped their wings" this week. No doubt Ken Harman filling in for the Comets and the presence of Mark Jobb in the lineup, may have given the Compton boys extra incentive. Mike McQuade, Dave Dickson and Bill Weis- flock had the Compton goals while Terry Flieler with two helpers and single assists by McQuade, Mark Jobb and Ken Harman completed their at- tack. The lone Hawk reply saw Chris Brain notch one from Ritchie LeFort and Keijo Kinnunen. Aces vs Gamblers Game 2 added another surprise to the day as the Taylor Aces got their second win of 1995 by dumping the Crandell's Gamblers 3-0. It appears that the Aces are finally on a "roll" and ready to make good on those New Year's Resolutions! Four Aces took care of the scoring in this one to capture the two points. Ken Little had a pair of goals, Rick Campbell had a goal and an assist, and both Wayne Norton and Fred Randell chipped in two assists a piece, as the Aces goal- tender John Moore took a well-deserved shutout. Blazers vs Devils Game 3 saw the Harrison Blazers jump back into a tie for first place overall with a 6-0 drum- ming on the Pizza Delight Devils. One Pizza Boy in particular failed to make the wake up call and apparently it had an effect on the play of the rest of the sleepy Devils! Ken Harman playing in his second game of the day had the Blazer shutout as this Harrison team made up for falling out of first place for one Sunday this season! Scoring sensation, John Harman, and team sponsor, Dave Harrison both had a goal and two assists. Steve Churchill, Larry Jackson, Dave Roth and Dale Bronson all had single tallies. Darcy Milligan had a pair of helpers with singles going to Jackson and Bronson as the Blazers "cooked" the Pizza Gang's chance to move up in the standings. Clippers vs Chargers Game 4 saw goaltender Ken Harman don yet another team sweater to fill in for the Fitzgerald Clippers. His third victory of the day was not to be as the Monsma Chargers were "energized" over the week layoff and skated to a 7-0 victory to stay in second place, just two points from the leaders! - Perennial scoring ace Bill Bridge was flying for the Chargers as he notched a goal and four as- sists for the "five point day." Duane Bronson, Jim Duncan, Tony Oxley, John Robertson, Paul Van- Camp and Jason Warner all had single counters. VanCamp with a pair of assists and singles by Warner, Jack Monsma, Brad Hurst and Bob Lee rounded out yet another season scoring parade for the Monsma Chargers. Phantoms vs Sharks | The final game of the week saw the Pineridge Phantoms licking their lips and ready to down the Van World Sharks in order to remain in sole possession of first place for vet another week. Fans will remember that these Phantoms waited patiently in the wings and watched the Chargers and Blazers battle it out for most of the season. Then just prior to the Ringette Tournament Break the Phantoms made their move to gain the center stage! With a chance to keep this position to the end of the schedule there were a few com- ments bantered about concerning another first place season for the Phantoms! However, enter the Van World Sharks with a one game win streak and the famous Shark Fren- zy and you can predict the result! This was an exciting game that saw the Sharks score twice in the final frame! Wayne Fox led the way with a pair of goals while Phil Cochrane had a single and Randy Prosser netted the winner. Greg Fitzgerald had a pair of helpers while Prosser, Terry Bache and Scot Davis had singles. Fred Moffatt led the Phantoms with two goals and an assist. Wayne Hancock scored a single and Robert VanCamp had two assists to complete the Pineridge offense. Once again the SHL is looking to an interest- ing three week race to the playoffs! There is still the season long battle at the top between Harri- sons, Monsma and Pineridge, but now the rest of the league is starting to come to life to jockey for playoff berths! Don't let the beginning for the NHL season keep you away from watch g excit- ing action at the local arena! Catch next Sunday's SHL action at the following times: 6:45 a.m. - Monsma Chargers vs Pineridge Phantoms 7:45 a.m. - Fitzgerald's Clippers vs Van World Sharks 8:45 a.m. - J&D Hawks vs Taylor Aces 9:45 a.m. - Crandell's Gamblers vs Pizza De- light Devils 10:45 a.m. - Harrison Blazers vs Compton Com- ets P.S. Best wishes for a speedy recovery are ex- tended to Port Perry Key-Bar Juvenile player Sean McEnaney. Sean suffered a serious neck in- jury in the Juvenile Silver Stick Tournament this past weekend and all members of the SHI, wish him well in his recovery process!
