Swamp slips into second After almost a month off, the local league took to the ice this past Sunday with little change in the standings once all three games were finished. B&R slipped past Blackstock in the battle for second, and the Fram- er's are now breathing down the neck of Trader Sam's. Jarrett Harman proved to be the determining factor as he notched a hat trick and added an assist for the win- ners. He was followed closely by Mike Mitchell who scored a pair and added a single helper. With Mitchell and Harman scoring in the first, and Raven's Jeff Poulton putting one up on the board from Dave Price, it looked like this one would be a squeaker, only to see B&R blow it wide open in the second half. Scott Heard and Brian Pome- roy rounded out the Swampers' scoring in the second with Po- meroy adding two assists. Brian Robinson proved to be a play- maker as he had three assists, with Mike Butt picking up a pair, and singles going to Mike Mole and Dale Lown. With a 1-0 shutout in game two, The Framer's Gallery are now breathing down the neck of Trader Sam's for the fourth and final playoff spot with just five regular season games to go. To add to the drama this one went - scoreless until, with just under three minutes to play,Eric K¥i tensen tallied from Jim Weir. Scott Blyth picked up the shut- out. The undefeated Brooklin Bruins remain as such after downing the Blackstock Brew- ers by a 3-1 final. Early in the first, while on the power play, Roger Ramelli set up Shawn Mitchell for the Bruins lead. Four minutes into the second half and in the span of 22 sec- onds, the lead became three goals when Mitchell assisted on Ken Lynde's shot from the point, and then added his sec- ond of the game from Ramelli. Tom Wotten from Ron Wagg and Ron Short spoiled Jim Raa- phorst's shutout bid. This weekend will see local play suspended on Sunday as the league will be holding their annual tournament in Sunder- land beginning on Friday eve- ning and continuing through to Sunday. The players started on the Friday against a team from Manvers. This game was very exciting with the monemtum swinging back and forth many times. Port scored in the first min- ute of the game and Manvers tied it up five minutes later. Port scored again and again Manvers tied it up. The end of the first period came with Port Perry having scored two more unanswered goals and holding a4-2lead. The second period saw Port Perry take the initiative and score first, however, Manvers battled back and tied it up at seven goals each with only five minutes left to play. The Ea- glettes then rallied for a final surge and scored the go-ahead goal with only 40 seconds on the clock. Port goals were scored by Jackie Pashley (four), Nicole Ansell (two), Hailey Wilson and Ceilidh Baxter. Assists went to Sarah Aldridge (two), Jill Hunt- er, Christine Cotie, Jackie, Hai- ley and Ceilidh. A tremendous effort was given in goal by Heather Imrie and very strong defensive and offensive plays "made by Whitney Reid, Holly Allison, Amanda Curry, Shan- non Hatfield, Brooke Simpson, Jessica Doe, Shannon Urquhart and Jenna Davison. The next game pitted Port against Ajax. This game was also quite exciting with Port ending the first period leading 6-1. Ajax then started scoring but couldn't catch the stronger Port team who ended up win- ning 9-4. Goals for the Eaglettes were scored by Jackie (six), Christine (two) and Nicole. Assists were made by Holly (two), Ceilidh, Shannon H., Shannon U., Jen- na and Whitney. Jill provided Port with a strong goaltending performance. The checking and hustle shown by Hailey, Sarah, Heather, Brooke, Jessica and Amanda left very few opportu- nities for Ajax to score. The final game of the round robin format saw Port playing Whitby. After leading 6-3 at the end of the first period, the Ea- glettes started feeling a little tense when Whitby closed the gap to 9-7 with less than three minutes to play and the momen- tum apparently in Whitby's fa- vor. Port Perry then rallied and scored three more goals in the last two and a half minutes to ensure the win, 12-7. Goals in this game were scored for Port by Jackie (six), Hailey (three), Nicole (two) and Christine. Assists were made by Amanda (three), Jackie (two), Brooke, Hailey and Christine. Heather was back in goal for this game and again stopped Whitby's sharpshoot- ers very well. Again, the check- ing and hustle shown by Sarah, Jessica, Whitney, Holly, Cei- lidh, Shannon H., Shannon U., Jenna and Jill helped keep Whitby at bay. With a record of 3-0, the Ea- glettes seemed on a roll and faced Manvers in the final. Manvers was first off the mark in this game and scored two goals before Port was able to re- cover. Losing 4-2 at the end of the first period, the Eaglettes regrouped and staged a com- back in the second period. The effort fell short, however, and Port ended up losing the final 6- 5. Goals for Port were scored by Jackie (three), Nicole and Christine. Assists for the Ea- glettes were made by Brooke, Shannon H., Hailey, Sarah and Whitney. A great effort was giv- en by Heather in net and the rest of the team (Ceilidh, Holly, Amanda, Jessica, Shannon U. and Jenna) on both offence and defence. From the coaches' perspec- tive, the players played well all weekend and every one of them worked together as a team to help win the games. Congratu- lations on the Silver Medal! The Eaglettes then played Manvers in their first Novice C Major League . Behind an excellent goaltending perfor- mance by Heather, Port con- trolled the first period and led 3- 0. This, despite being short- handed for about four and a half minutes of the period. This game was far from over as the Eaglettes then had to serve an- other five and a half minutes in penalties in the second period and at one point were two players short. Manvers was able to slowly creep back into the game and managed to tie the score at four goals each with 3:28 left to play. Manvers then went ahead 5-4 on a goal scored with 1:28 left to play. The Ea- glettes then pulled their goalie and controlled the play in Man- vers' end, resulting in a goal to tieit up at five goals apiece with 51 seconds left to play. Port con- tinued with an empty net and, despite several good scoring chances, was unable to pull off the win, settling for the 5-5 tie. Scoring for the Eaglettes were Nicole (three), Jackie and Christine; with assists going to Holly, Jackie, Whitney and Christine. Although not in- volved in the official scoring, the plays made by Ceilidh, Jill, Brooke, Amanda, Jessica, Shannon U., Hailey, Jenna and Sarah helped set up our goals and their close checking left Manvers very few chances to score. Great game! Wreckers win 6-0 The Whitby Auto Wreckers of the Atom House League solidi- fied their hold on first place in league play when they defeated the Lions 6-0. The boys seem to be rounding into shape - playing as a team - a tribute to the per- sistent coaching and the players beginning to "listen". Matt Smart continues to hold the "hot stick" as he scored his second hat trick in a row. An- other "Matt" - this one Fraser, also had a big game from his de- fensive position, scoring one un- assisted and gaining an assist. Single tallies came from Ga- briel Benschop and Chns McKitterick. Single assists were awarded to Jamie Ander son and Joe Farquarson. Jeff Kane and Matt Fraser as a defensive duo were plus four on the day and a good defensive game was shown for John-Ross [Lennox and Stefan Senyk. Pe- ter Konstantino had a superb game gaining the shutout. On Jan. 4, the Whitby squad defeated Laurentian 7-3. Matt Smart again led the team to vic- tory with three goals and one assist. Joel Campbell had a goal and assist with single markers coming from Jeff Glanville. John-Ross Lennox and Came- ron MacDonald. In the "helper" department, Jeff Kane led the way with two, with singles coming from Ga- briel Benschop, Nicholas Bron- son, Adam Harkness and Chns McKittenick! Keep up the sohd two-way hockey, guys.
