Lindsay got on the board first, scoring from a scramble in front of netminder Darcy Stephens. Earlier in the period Mike LeFort and Adam Moynes missed on a two on one break as did Trevor Lance and Jeff Tarbotton. Also Dean VanCamp missed on a breakaway backhander. The Malmonts replied with 18 seconds left in the first as rookie Jeff Tarbotton found the net. Trevor Lance and Justin Moffatt got helpers. In the second, Lindsay jumped in front again as a man was left uncovered in front. A little later Steve MacLennan. Tim Jones and Justin did some fine penalty killing work. Momen- tum shifted to the "Green Machine" at this stage as Dean gave Adam abeauty pass on a two on one and Adam gave us a two-all tie. Steve also assisted. Veteran Dane Gray then connected with a deflected shot from the point. Just 18 seconds later Dar- cy was beaten on a high shot by a Lindsay forward left all alone again. Justin repaired the damage and restored the Port Perry lead that would stand up the rest of the way. Our fourth goal of the period was an unassisted wrist shot by Dean who took advan- tage of a loose puck. In the third period Jamie Smith was gifted a goal on a shot from an impossible angle in the left corner. Trevor Weisflock and Dane were credited with assists. Also in the third. Adam scored his second of the game on a rebound from the edge of the crease (is that Adam's second home??). After Dean had shot to the net. Hard working centre Mike LeFort also assisted. . Defensive highlights for the Malmonts included Tyler Hou- "~thuys and Dane both stopping two on one plays and a strong but unsuccessful diving effort by Tim on a Lindsay breakaway goal. Scott Duncan and Steve created several neutral zone turnovers and big Mark Duncan threw himselfinto the corners with abandon. Darcy was called on to stop two successive point- blank wrist shots as well. Overall, there was a more positive team effort on our oppo- nents home pond and with a little better man to man coverage in our own zone perhaps momentum will continue in our direc- tion. Techstars start playoffs The Techstar Bantams start- ed their playoffs on January 18 against Uxbridge. The two times these two teams met in league action the Techstars By David Stell A win. You have to want it. You have to be ag- gressive, take chances and fight for it. The Mo- Jacks showed they have that fire to win on Fri- day night by beating the Georgina Ice 7-5. The win gave Port Perry a strong position heading into the final three games of the schedule. But Port Perry ran into a team that wanted it just that little bit more on Sunday night. The Uxbridge Bruins, facing a must win game of their own, gave the ModJacks a taste of their own medicine. The Bruins never gave up in this one even though they trailed 2-1 after the first period. They held the MoJacks off the scoreboard for the next two periods and tied it up to send it to overtime. Only Rick Hutchin- son, the MoJacks netminder, could keep Port Perry in it as long as they were. He faced 37 Bruins shots Sunday and almost all of them were good scoring chances. The game winning goal was just a case of the odds catching up with Hutchinson. He faced a number of shots from the Bruins snipers, who were right on top of him, and robbed them of goals all night. It took an extra period for the Bruins to finally get their third goal and the win. Hutchinson said the loss hurt, but he is looking forward to tonight's game in Bowman- ville against the Eagles. What happened on the Bruins overtime goal? "I could have stopped it lots of ways," he said. "I picked the aggressive way to go because I didn't see anyone there to help me. So I tried to make the move first (on the shooter)." The Bruins were celebrating their goals as if they were in the Stanley Cup. But maybe the Bruins were able to steal a win because the Mo- Jacks had pulled out all the stops against the Ice Friday. It was a real test of character for this year's MoJacks and they proved they can win the important ones by beating Georgina on their home "Ice." The MoJacks jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the game, but the stubborn Ice wouldn't go away. They charged back and erased the three goal deficit for a 5-5 score in the third period. But Port Perry kept the desire to win alive and Darryl Bricknell scored the eventual game winner to make it 6-5. An emp- ty net goal gave the MoJacks the cushion they needed to "Ice" Georgina and leave town with animportant two point wan. MoJacks win and lose The Uxbridge Bruins came to Port Perry with hopes of stealing two valuable points from the MoJacks. They desperately needed the points to keep their chances of finishing second place in the Central Division standings alive. Unfortu- nately the game was filled with penalties. Al- most 40 penalties were handed out by referee Dwayne Phillips. He wasn't very popular with the crowd because of some questionable penal- ties. One of the biggest cheers of the night came when a MoJack and Bruin chased after a puck between Phillips' legs. They hit him in unison crushing him against the boards. Fortunately he came away uninjured. Fights were the unfortunate part of the game. The ModJacks handed out some punishment when the gloves dropped, but it was mostly in self defence. Steve Laird of the MoJacks was up- set with Bruins rookies on several occasions when they crossed his path. He received a few cheap shots such as a spear in the ribs. He found himself in the penalty box a few times for pro- tecting himself. He explained the problem with the Bruins. "The rookies showed no respect on the ice," he said "there should be some respect out there, but thereisn't." Bricknell continues to impress for the Mo- Jacks with his quick skates and scoring touch. He has a good sense of the ice and finds himself in the right place at the right time. The ModJacks should have a potent power play when they reach the playoffs. With Bricknell, Leslie, Jason Cochrane, Steve Staniland and Todd Dennis on the ice the opposition will be trying to find a way out of the arena. Bricknell described his two goals in the first period. "Pigeau basically did all the work for the first one," he said. "It was right on the goal line and I just poked it in. On the second goal I was beside the goal post and Leslie put it across for me to putitinto the empty net." The Bruins and MoJacks have two games re- maining in their schedule and both will meet Bowmanville sometime this week. It should make for high drama next Saturday night when the Lakefield Chiefs travel to Port Perry for the ModJacks final game of the regular season. That game could turn out to be the decider between the ModJacks finishing second, third or as low as fourth if Uxbridge upsets Bowmanville and the ModJacks can't. The MoJacks take on Lakefield this Saturday night at 8 p.m. came away with a 8-0 and a 5-2 win. | But this was playoffs and Ux- bridge seemed to be an im- proved team. Uxbridge seemed to catch the Techstars napping early as they scored the only goal of the first. Doug Short stopped shot after shot from Ux- bridge to keep it at 1-0. In the second the Techstars got it together and Uxbridge could not stop them. Ryan Puckrin tied it up on the power play assisted by Dil- lian Weber and Dan Lyons. The Techstars took the lead a few minutes later when Puck- rin got number two of the night from Gavin Baxter and Glen McCready. Baxter added some insurance assisted by Troy Campbell. Still in the second period, J.P. Copeland made it 4-1 from Dave Gainey and Ian Parliament. Late in the second Weber made a beautiful pass to send Scott Sanderson in alone who deeked out the goalie to make it | 5-1. Lyons also assisted on that one. ing as the Techstars held on to take a 1-0 serieslead. - On the 20th they faced off again in Uxbridge this time. The first period saw some more great goaltending by Short (as usual). Late in the first Dave Gainey got the 1-0 lead assisted by Adam "Bullet" Brain. Early in the second they made it 2-0 when Campbell scored assisted by Parliament and Scott Harp- er. Uxbridge cut the lead to 2-1 midway through the second. Baxter got the only goal at the third from Puckrin and Gai- ney to make it 3-1. ® Goalie Doug Short and the Techstar defense held Uxbridge the rest of the game to give the Techstars a 2-0 series lead.
