4- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, January 24, 1995 Chamber faces busy '95 New president vows to build on strenghts By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star The new president of the Scugog Chamber of Commerce says it's her ambition in the coming year to build on tradi- tion, and seek new projects. Brenda Casteels, a sales rep with ReMax Scugog Realty in Port Perry, was installed as president of the Chamber last Tuesday night. She's been with the Chamber for three years, and served in 1994 as first vice- president. She said she's hoping during her term to build on the Chamber's strengths, and find new ways to raise funds and provide residents of the town- ship with entertainment and fun. In addition, she's seeking financial stability" for the Chamber's numerous efforts throughout the year that require fundraising. Area merchants can always be counted on for support, but there's a danger of going to the well too many times in search of support, said Ms Casteels. "We're exploring a few pos- sibilities," she said, "a different kind of fundraiser so we're not going to the same merchants all the time." Major efforts on the Chamber's agenda this year will include an expanded . Canada Day celebration -- per- haps an all-day event -- and support for Scugog township's new community centre, she said. The Chamber will weigh other requests for assistance as they come in, said Ms Casteels. "We constantly have some- one approaching us, asking for assistance on a multitude of projects every year," she said. Ms Casteels is looking for- ward to working this year with the Chamber's 15 recently- installed directors, as well as newly-elected vice president Rick McCoshen. Mr. McCoshen has proven a tireless and effec- tive worker for the Chamber, she said. "I feel really good about working with Rick," she said. "He's a straight shooter; one of those guys who when he takes something on, does it right." One of the tasks at hand now is to assign directors to the host of committees in which the Chamber has a stake. They will include the town's econom- 1c development committee, and the Chamber's representative will be Ken Carruthers, former councillor for Ward 1. Ms Casteels feels good about the mixture of old and new blood on the Chamber's board of directors. "That's what helps the Chamber grow: New people all the time, bringing in new ideas," she said. | 1 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" ¢ 1 ¥ New Scugog Chamber of Commerce president Brenda Casteels says she is looking ahead to a busy and productive year. : Auxiliary tack shop officially opened Members of the Hospital Aux- iliary officially opened Commu- nity Memorial Hospital's new gift shop last week, with several residents in attendance.
