PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, January 31, 1995 - 17 Educate yourself Oh money issues It has been said that the best investment a person can make is in their education. This has never been truer than when it comes to educating yourself about money issues. That is why it is very important that everyone educate themselves to some degree in financial matters. Reading books, newspapers, and listening to television and radio will no doubt help you. The most effective way, though, in my opinion, is to attend Financial Seminars. It is a seminar that you can hear advice, recommendations and answers to questions by qualified persons. Better yet, you are able to ask direct questions and get answers to your own questions. Prior to attending a Financial Seminar it is wise to phone and confirm your reservation. The next step is to review your investment holdings prior to the seminar so that you know what types of investments you have chosen in the past. This will allow you to focus on comments that relate to your particular holdings. The most interesting part of the seminar for both the audience and the speaker I have found, is the Question Period that follows the presentation. It is here that specific questions that relate to you will be asked. Have a question ready if you like or ask for clarification or more detail at this time. Listed below are questions that should be asked and answered at a Financial ® Business WE PREPARE ALL RETURNS. ® Farm ® Rental ® GST Seminar. 1. Should we pre-pay our mortgage or purchase an RRSP? 2. Should I purchase my RRSP's in my name or my spouce's? 3. Am I better to have many RRSP's or just one? 4. What service is offered and what are the costs? 5. What are the risks involved in investing? 6. How can I reduce my Income Taxes? 7. Why is having Foreign Content in an RSP important? 8. Should I receive Interest, Dividends and/or Capital Gains? 9. Do I have to sign a contract when I agree to invest monthly? 10. How long have you been a Financial Advisor? 11. What credentials do you have? 12. Is information held in confidence? 13. Are you available outside normal business hours? 14. Do you provide other services? Attending a financial seminar will allow you to learn valuable information in a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere. The past is history, the present is here and gone, but the future is bright for those who plan ahead and act wisely. Most people would an- swer "YES" to both questions, where Retirement Savings Plans (RSPs) are concerned. Sadly and often, investors put in their RSPs investments that will not make them money. Eagerness to get a tax credit often leads to making a pur- chase int a hurry and the "in- vestment" ends up being a dis- appointment and frequently a loser. When the advertisements headline profits and perfor- mance from the past, it is easy to expect/hope that the same performance will happen again. A winning track record looks great; however it can also be dangerously misleading. "Past performance is no guar- antee of future performance." This is usually written in fine print. Butitis very true. So what is an investor to do? Investors these days are con- cerned about interest rates, in- flation, the value of the Canadi- an dollar, taxes, and maybe events in such places as Mexico, Russia and Hong Kong. New in- vestors and those who already invest should ask themselves the following questions: - Do I understand the invest- ments I own (or am thinking of buying)? - Do I, or will I, sleep well at night and not be worrying about what my investments are do- ing? - Are my investments suita- ble for the current economic sit- uation in Canada? - Are my investments suited to my current and expected per- sonal and financial situations? People often ask me: "What Courtesy of, do you recommend I invest in?" Christopher K.
