-- 24- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, January 31, 1995 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" i PORTS IGA Juniors prove they are a team to be reckoned with qd The R.H. Cornish junior girls volleyball team were the runners-up for the area pennant last week. Pictured are the members of the team. Front row from left are: Andrea Tindall, Jessica Sturgess, Ashlea Jones, Jennifer Bruton, Jennifer Connelly, Samantha Birley, (back) Kalin Moon, Jessica Royle, Ashley Faux; Amy Fitchett, Colleen Barfoot and Rick De- Jong, coach. Absent from photo is Colleen Bruce and Julia Martyn MoJacks claim second by David Stell What an exciting finish to the - season. The ModJacks 'had to - battle it out right down to the fi-- nal game before locking up sec- ond place. They did it in con- vincing fashion too by beating the Lakefield Chiefs 6-2 on Sat- urday night. Lakefield has given Port Perry some tough games this year, but the ModJdacks took care of business Saturday when the really needed to. Players like Keith Leslie and Todd Dennis looked like they were using this game as a warmup for the playoffs. They combined for most of the offence with Leslie scoring two goals and two as- sists, while Dennis added a goal and two assists. The win ended Georgina's chance at finishing second this season in their first year in the league. They still have to battle it out with Uxbridge for third place. Port Perry has earned the right to sit out the first round of the playoffs by finishing in sec- Turnto Page 28 The Port Perry Junior Rin- gette team is quite a team!. In September, a call went out to any 14 and 16-year-old Port Perry girls who wished to join the Junior Ringette team. Four- teen girls of varying experience and skill responded, and last weekend really proved that they are one team in Ontario to be reckoned with! The IGA Juniors participated in an eight-team Junior AA tournament in Waterloo which included teams 'from as far away as Montreal, Sudbury and London. Since our Port girls are not a double A team, this event was looked upon as one of devel- opment and challenge. Not for these girls, no way! The Port Perry IGA team came third, was defeated only once, and missed out on the champion- ship game by only one goal. It's 'something to be proud of when we realize that the small town of Port Perry consistently devel- ops excellent teams in a large variety of sports. I] On Friday night, the Port Juniors met Cambridge AA. This team is undefeated this year in its AA circuit and the Port Perry group of fans and parents agree that Cambridge exhibited skill, discipline and co-opération worthy of a cham- pionship team. However, the ort girls put up a fight and with the excellent goaltending of Katie Senyk, kept the score to 2-0 for Cambridge at the end of the first period. Unfortunately, the refs began to insert them- selves unusually into the game, disallowed two Port goals and 'the tide turned. Cambridge's excellent conditioning and high level of skill took over and the fi- nal score was 10-4. This was Port Perry's only loss of the tournament. Cara Vander Slagt opened the scoring on, a read- my-mind pass. from Shona Moase. Shona quickly followed, 'assisted by Dana Hooker and 'Cara. Bonnie Jo Norton, using her unusual .strength on her feet, powered the ring into the net assisted by Cara and Laura Hooker; and Janine Hammond Turnto Page 26 Legionnaires are grand champs | Game One The Port Perry Legionnaires were on the road early Friday morning for their game of the Pick- ering Tournament. The Port boys found themselves against their present playoff rivals Cobourg. Cobourg came ready to meet the challenge of our team who is ahead of them three games to 0 in their playoff series. The first period was pretty fast hockey with no penalties and hardly any whistles by the refs. Cobourg was on the scoreboard first with just 26 seconds left in the first period, they increased their lead by two at just 9:21 of the second peri- od. Two penalties to Cobourg at 7:33 put Port into their power play mode and sure enough Greg Bruton whistled one by the Cobourg goalie unassisted. Chad Lance tied up the game assist- ed by Derek Campbell and Nick Pelyk. Despite Port playing smart hockey and get- ting only two minutes in penalties compared to Cobourg's 10 minutes their goalie was stopping our shots. Cobourg went ahead again at 3:01 of the second. Brad Johnston tied up the game at 5:58 of the third period assisted by Nick Pelyk. Cobourg re- sponded by scoring two more goals in the third period to win the game 5-3. Congratulations to Sean Jeffrey who received the MVP award for his outstanding game on defence. Game Two Legionnaires vs Milton The second game of the Pickering Tourna- ment turned out to be target practice for the Le- gionnaires. The opposing team of Milton, had a severe shortage of players and were not up to the challenge. They put forth a valiant effort and deserve credit for their sportsmanlike play. Port Perry won the game with a final score of 16-0, with Chris Monsma (and his hot little hands) picking up the shutout. Braden Tarbotton achieved the hat trick as well as MVP honors! Greg Bruton also picked up a hat trick along with three assists. Jeff Ashton scored two goals and assisted on two more. Nick Pelyk and Brad Johnston each scored twice and assisted on another. Chris Skerratt and Deryk Campbell had one goal each and two assists. Ryan McQuade also picked up a goal. Matt Caldwell had three assists and Sean Jeffrey had two. My hat's off to the timekeeper on this game! Good team effort, boys! Game Three The Legionnaires played against London on Saturday morning. London came out of the shoot in a hurry scoring the first goal at just 8:48 of the first period, however Port came back in just 20 seconds with a nicely setup goal scored by Ryan McQuade assisted by Chris Skerratt and Greg Bruton. Again both teams were playing good clean hockey with no penalties in the first period. At 7:59 Nick Pelyk made a nice pass over to Derek Campbell who passed it over to Brad Johnston and Port went ahead by two goals. The second period continued on with Port hus- tling hard keeping the puck in front of London netminder. Their persistance paid off with Brad Johnston getting his second goal of the game as- sisted by Nick Pelyk and Derek Campbell. Nick Pelyk popped another one in just two minutes later assisted by Brad Johnston and Derek Campbell. (these three were "hot" today). With 22 seconds left in the second period Ryan McQuade carried the puck in and slipped it by the London goalie assisted by Chris Sker- ratt and Greg Bruton. London despite their efforts could not get past our boys. Our defense lines of Ashton, Cald- well, Chambers and Jeffrey were all playing a solid game. Mike MacLennan was solid between the posts and was having a great game, coming out to meet a London player head to head on one breakaway Mike stopped him cold. Jeff Ashton wrapped up the scoring with one of his "smokers" from the blue line assisted by Brad Johnston. Congratulations to Nick Pelyk who was named MVP for this game. Game 4 Legionnaires vs Newmarket At 9:02 of the first period, Deryk Campbell started things off by popping in a rebound from Aaron Chambers. Port came right back at 8:36 with a similar play, only this time, Nick Pelyk got the marker from Deryk Campbell and Brad Johnston. Port found themselves with two men in the penalty box for 14 long seconds, but "our man Bart" (Monsma) came up big between those' big red pipes! The first period ended 2-0. Newmarket came back with a goal at 6:47 of the second, from a scramble in front of the net. At 4:31, Newmarket took a penalty and Port took over the play. One goal was scored, but called back. Seconds later, Brad Johnston punched in a rebound, assisted by Ryan McQuade. Braden Tarbotton set Steve Wygerde up per- fectly for an awesome goal making it 4-1. Min- utes later Chris Skerratt scored, assisted by Greg Bruton and Ryan McQuade. The third period saw Port score on a shot from Brad Johnston, assisted by Deryk Campbell and Nick Pelyk. At 1:19, Newmarket scored to make the final score 6-2, for Port Perry. Newmarket showed terrific sportsmanship in this game! We can't overlook the play of the de- fense in this and all Legionnaire's games. The likes of Matt Caldwell, Sean Jeffrey, Aaron Chambers and Jeff Ashton have played an im- portant part in the success of this team. Way to go, Port! On to the South Division Finals. Between games of this tournament, Pickering Minor Hockey hosted a skills contest. Our relay team of Jeff AShton, Nick Pelyk, Brad Johnston and Greg Bruton won top honors, beating 13 teams. Port goalie, Mike MacLennan placed third in the shootout contest. Chad Lance was the Legionnaires "shooter." You all did us proud. Where is Port Perry, anyway? . Game Five The story continues Sunday when we met up with the Markham Thunder. We have to give this team credit, this was one heck of a hockey weekend and these players never let up. Port was on the scoreboard first with a nice goal by Brad Johnston assisted by Nick Pelyk and Derek Campbell. These three were clicking like a well oiled machine this weekend. Mike MacLennan came up with three nice saves early in this period and Markham was not letting up. Again as in previous games the penalty box remained empty throughout the entire period. Ryan McQuade increased Port's lead by two at 8:59 of the second assisted by Greg Bruton and Chris Skerratt. Markham scored at 3:30 of the second with their power play which was Port Perry's only penalty of the entire game. [IY / LO
