"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, January 31, 1995 - 25 ca Bantams eliminate Lindsay *On Jan. 27, the Port Perry Country Style Bantams played host to Lindsay in the second game of a three out of five series. We were flying! Jay Strickert scored on a short handed effort, dumping it in on net, hard. Ding! Off the pipe and in the net. Rob Murphy assisted on this fine effort. Shane Norton found the net next, taking a pass from Heffern and popping it in the top corner. Beauty. Colin Laird also assisted, giving Scotty the puck. It was two to one at this point, but we just weren't domi- nating the way we should have been. Lairdy scored next, re- ceiving a beautiful setup from Shane Norton. Colin, who doesn't score too often, pumped her home, and finished it off with a goccer run. Was he happy, or what? Way to be watchin', Norty! Shane then scored our final goal, assisted by Casey VanSchagen. Casey let'er fly from the point, and Norton was there to bang in the rebound. I tell ya, when Casey wants to shoot, he can really let her howl. We won this one 4-1, and we were happy! The next day, Jan. 28 we were off to Lindsay with an opportu- nity to put Lindsay away, and to watch the Superbowl on Sun- day. Mike Heasman scored our first, letting a rocket go from the line, top corner. Norty remarked "that shot from Heasman. I'm surprised it didn't go right through the net. Just like Ste- phane Richer." Adam Hobbs then scored his first of three for our second tally, unassisted. Sniped. Froats scored, just as promised, tipping in a dribbler from the stick of Tindall. Nice going, Froaty. Quick hands, quick hands. Motor City Smitty got back on track, going to the net, hard. You gotta watch out for that thing, Smitty, it hurts! Smitty broke in off the wing, cut to the net and put her home. Folks, when Smitty goes to the net, either, he goes in, the puck goes in, the goalie goes in, something goes in. Murphy and Laird assist- ed. Derek Tin Man Tindall scored on the power play, assisted by Froats and Heasman on the line. Beauty! After two, it was 5- 3 in our favor, but again, we just weren't dominating the play like we should have been. Lindsay got one more early in the third, to bring it back to 5- The Finnish Flash, Adam Hobbs, set an all time North Amer- ican Bantam Hockey record when he scored two goals in a mat- ter of five seconds. First, Hobbsy knocked in a rebound for a power play goal, with assists going to Scotty Heffern, and Shane Norton. Right off the draw, Norty got it to Hobbs, who took off, flying down the ice, split the defence, and left the ten- der stranded, at the hash marks. Adam smartly walked around him and tucked her home. Way to go Hobbsy. A record setter! Your name ought to be printed in the record books, for your children to read. Our final goal was scored by Norton, liftingit up and over the sprawled out tender. Heffern and Hobbs both picked up as- sists. What a win! We eliminated Lindsay in three straight. This series featured great playoff action, and the next series is promised to as well. This week's player profile is on tender Shane Savage. The Grizzly is just a rookie, but no foolin,' he's a beauty! He likes pucks bouncing off him. Don't ask why, he's just one of those guys...a little flaky. But then again, you've gotta be to stand in against 60 mph slappers. Sav experienced our team goal last season with the Peewee Legionnaires. An All-Ontario Victory. Off the ice, Shane has a black belt in Karate. He says "it's not the physical aspect I take karate for, but the mental. It really helps me prepare for a big game. I start Yoga next week, and I'm thinking that this will really improve my preparation hab- its." Shane's a great goalie with lots of heart. His unorthodox style makes him unbelievable and a pleasure to see in action. Tweens action continues Saturday, Jan. 28 saw Port's Tween B Ringette team meet up against Whitby on home ice. The Pineridge girls carried the play during the first period, making numerous shots on the opposing net without much suc- cess. Whitby was able to break through our defence late in the first period to open the scoring. Port soon gathered force and. Amy Wilson popped in a nice goal unassisted. Whitby wasn't long coming back to gain two more before the buzzer sound- ed, ending period one with a two-point lead. The Pineridge girls tried hard in the early minutes of the sec- Emiels defeats Big On Saturday, Jan. 14, Emiel's defeated Big Vin a very close game 3-1. Our defensive team of Diana Burnett, Jackie Smith, Kim Carrique® and Emilie Levielle put up a good fight this game. All chil- dren aged 10-14 were eligible to compete in the first leg of the Big V and Larocque meet up Saturday's lunch time duel retween Laroque and Big V was i fan's delight with exciting '-nd-to-end action and superb goaltending. Big V got the show on the road just 11 seconds into the game with Matt McGarry and Tim Wray combining to set up Mike Giannini who rifled a shot past a surprised John Bar- ton. Later in the first period, Matt Cracknell made it 2-0 for Big V with a nice solo effort. Hard work by Ryan Kehoe re- sulted in a John Sanders' blast to cut Big V's margin to one goal, early in the second period. Chris Medford buried a pass from Matt McGarry to restore Big V's two goal margin at 9:54 of the second period, but La- roque's Jeff Harrison bulged the twine at the 53 second mark of the second to set up a terrific finish. The Laroque squad started off the third period flying but Big V netminder Eric Bird was outstanding in keeping them off the scoreboard. Laroque's John Barton was nothing short of sensational between the pipes as he stopped Big V cold on two breakaways. The matter was fi- nally settled when Tim Wray converted a setup from Jason Howarth and Ken Lukas to ice the game with the final score be- ing 4-2.
