i "A Family Tradition for 128 Years" IR PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, January 31, 1995 - 27 re SPORTS Midget Islande This weekend the Port Perry Midget Islanders were on their way to a three-day tournament in Elmvale. In the first match- up, they saw themselves pitted against a strong team from Wainfleet. This team played good positional hockey and seemed to always have that man sitting out front so that our goalkeeper Jamie Trick didn't stand a chance. At theend of the first period the score was 3-2 for Wainfleet. Our goals had been scored by Matt Brown and Dar- ren Kinnunen, with assists go- ing to Trevor Smith, Mark Brownson and Carl Phoenix. By the middle of the second period we brought Brian Bick- more in to take over our goal- tending to see how he would make out against this team, but by the end of the second period Wainfleet had lengthened their lead to 6-2 and that's how the scoring ended. On Saturday we travelled back to Elmvale to head for the consolation side of the tourna- ment and even though our bench sported fewer players than last night our level of de- sire seemed to be higher. We were matched up with a team from Brampton and with less than a minute under our belts Todd Parry scored our first goal with the assist from Matt Phil- lips. Darren Kinnunen put us on the scoreboard again with a great passing play from Kevin Gray and Eric Lucyk. Bramp- ton scored their lone goal for the game in less than a minute, but Jon Jamieson met their chal- lenge with a shot high in the cor- ner which put the score at 3-1 at the end of the first. Assisting on John's goal were Carl Phoenix and Eric Lucyk. The Islanders were able to score four more goals in the sec- ond period and one in the third to end the game at 8-1. Goals were scored by Eric Lucyk, Jon Jamieson (with two that gave him his hat trick) and Trevor Smith. Assisting on the goals were Matt Phillips with two, Adam Hunter, Darren Kinnu- nen, Carl Phoenix and Rob Gra- cie. Brian Bickmore was be- tween the pipes for us in this game and put on a solid display of goaltending. Although this was a long way to travel, back we went again on sunday to play in the consola- tion championship against a team from Almagiun (close to North Bay, they tell us). We played a solid game against this team but didn't do the shooting in the first period that we need- ed to in order to get on the score- board. Almagiun were up 2-0 before the end of the second pe- riod and then finally Islander Matt Phillips was able to put one past the Almagiun goal- tender. Darren Kinnunen drew the assist on this one. Jamie Trick was in net for the Island- ers and he had to play sharp to keep the score at 3-1. In the third period the Port Perry boys seemed to come alive and made things happen. Eric Lucyk made a slick on-the-ice shot that caught the Almagiun goalie completely unaware. Jon Jamieson picked up the assist on this goal and Mark Brown- Fs rs take part in tourney son scored our final goal to give us the tie. Eric Lucyk assisted on the goal. We were then slotted into overtime with a 10-minute sud- den death period and it looked pretty good® for us because Al- magiun had picked the last sec- ond of regulation time to pick up a tripping penalty. Unfortu- nately, calm tempers didn't pre- vail and when Port was given two overlapping penalties, it didn't take long for Almagiun to score the tie-breaking goal. The team is all set now to start their semi-finals against Trenton with the first game tak- ing place next Friday night at 9:30 p.m. in Port Perry. On Friday, Jan. 27 the Pearce Auction Major Novice hosted Cobourg in their first playoff game of the season. The Auctioneers played ag- gressively and skated to a 3-1 win. Port Perry was first to score when Gordon Smith quickly moved the puck up the ice for a shot on net. Teddy Howarth picked up the re- bound and passed it back to Gordon who passed it back out. Chet Martin, coming off the bench, rushed the net picking up the pass for a goal. Gordon and Teddy picked up the assists. Just over a minute later, Chet surprised the Cobourg goalie with a shot from just inside the blue line for Port Perry's second goal. Kevin Robins, who played a super game, got the assist on thatone. Cobourg's only goal came at 3:14 in the first period. Kevin scored an unassisted goal at 4:03 in the second period to make it 3-1 for the Auc- tioneers. Both teams played all out for the remainder of the game but neither could come up with an- other goal. Justin Shinn had a strong offensive game with several rushes and some good shots on net. Pat Lewis, Alex Nicolau and Lucas Fraser were effectively backchecking through- out the game and helped to kill some of Port Perry's five penalties. Jordan Froats skated hard and Tyler Weis- flock who was unable to play most of the game due to a back injury, patrolled his wing well Pearce Major Novice win first playoff game when he was on. On the defensive side, Justin Koury made some great plays. Gordon Smith, Joey Lane, and Ryan Hnatko also played a good defensive game. Their strong defense together with the great saves made by Scott Honey and Kurtis Wagar frustrated Cobourg's scoring attempts. The 3-1 win for the Auctioneers was a great start to their play-off series. The previous night the Pearce Auction team was invited to play an exhibition game in Oshawa against the Bruins. The Port Perry boys got off to a strong start and were the first on the scoreboard. Lucas Fraser scored with only 23 seconds left in the first period. Chet Martin and Tyler Weisflock picked up the assists. Be- ing shorthanded the Auctioneers grew noticea- bly slower as the game wore on. Oshawa scored three times in three minutes during the second period. Chet Martin scored for Port Perry late in the second to make it 3-2 going into the third period. Port Perry's defense was strong throughout the game. Ryan Hnatko and Joey Lane, Justin Shinn and Gordon Smith; along with good goaltending from Kurtis Wagar and Scott Honey, managed to hold the Bruins to only three goals. Port Perry was unable to score again and the game ended up 3-2 Bruins. A special thanks to Chris Nicolaou for the ex- traice time lately. With the Super Bowl yielding no surprises, it was up to the action in the SHL to provide the excitement for local sports fans on "Super Sun- day!" One week remains in the league schedule and all teams are gearing up for the "second season" and a year full of bragging rights! Blazers vs Sharks Game one saw the Harrison Blazers continue with their strangle-hold on first place with a 4- 2 victory over the Van World Sharks. Those Sharks have been on a win streak lately, but the Harrison crew were determined to finish the season in their familiar, first place spot! Joe Forder led the Blazers with a pair of goals and an assist. John Harman and Larry Jackson had singles to seal the victory. Darcy Milligan along with Harman counted two as- sists each with singles credited to Richard Sak- anashi, David Roth and Dale Bronson. Phantoms vs Devils Game two had the Pineridge Phantoms need- ing a victory to stay within a point of the Blaz- ers. The Pizza Delight Devils gave them a run for their money in this match, but with just two minutes remaining, Bill Van Camp fired the winner to give the Phantoms a 3-2 decision. Clarence Stephenson and Steve Fax had the other Phantom goals. Jim Fowler had two help- ers with single assists going to Stephenson, Brian Samis, Mike Geer and Sean Fewer. Comets vs Gamblers Game three saw the Compton Comets come to life to down the Crandell's Gamblers 6-3. No doubt the return of Doub Bache to the lineup, along with the presence of Mark Jobb helped to get the Comets back on orbit! Dave Dickson led the Comet attack with a pair of goals and an assist. Amazingly, Bill Weisflock, Mark Jobb, Mike McQuade and Wil- ly Edwards each contributed a goal and an as- gist. Both Ken Davison and Jeff Johnstone had two helpers as the Compton Crew moved up to geventh place overall. One week left until SHL begins playoffs For the Gamblers Glen McCoy had a pair, and Bob Partington fired a single. Carl Durham had | two assists while single helpers went to Dave Bourgeois, Ken Jeffrey and Mark Decosta. Hawks vs Clippers Game four saw Jon Rensink fill in for the J&D goaltender Ray Gibson, and help to lead the Hawks to a 4-0 victory over the Fitzgerald Clip- pers. The Hawks have had a strong January and maybe the team to watch for playoff upsets in a couple of weeks time! The Hawk scoring was handled by Rick Hope, Peter Lane, Joe Curran and Keijo Kinnunen who each neited singles. Ritchie LeFort was fly- ing with three assists, while Curran, Dennis Ly- cett and Chris Brain each made the scoresheet with singles. Chargers vs Aces The final game of Week 22 saw the Monsma Chargers defeat the Taylor Aces 4-1. Rick Olaisen and Lee Wilbur had two helpers while singles went to Duane Bronson, Paul Van Camp and John Robertson in this Monsma victory.
