-- -------- -------- ------ ---- . 28- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, January 31, 1995 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" SPORTS MoJacks lock up second From Page 24 ond place. MoJacks general manager, Murray Parliament, says the decision to take the bye was made in order to give the players a chance to rest before playing their first series. It's also to let some players heal from injuries during the regular season. Coach Brad Menzies wasn't behind the bench for the Mo- Jacks' final game of the regular season. He had to sit it out after being ejected from a game against the Bowmanville Ea- gles last Wednesday. Emotions are always high when the Mo- Jacks play the Eagles and Wednesday's game was no ex- ception. The officiating was questionable in the first period and Menzies was upset with a few calls. To let the referee know how he felt, Menzies just wouldn't put his players out on the ice. That's why he was forced to leave the game and then watch Saturday's game against Lakefield. The Bow- manvile game is in the past, though. "You get frustrated and you do things you shouldn't have," Menzies said. "I did it and I paid the consequences and.I'm not going to worry about it now." Assistant coach Chic Carne- gie did an excellent job in Men- zies' place. He took over Wednesday when Menzies left the game. Saturday's game gave him more time to prepare for coaching the whole team. "It was a little more orga- nized tonight than it was in Bowmanville," Carnegie said. "The guys played well." Port Perry still managed to make the Bowmanville game interesting, though. Twice they came back from three goals down, to tie it at 6-6, before los- ing the game with just 31 sec- onds left in the overtime period. They gained a point for forcing it to overtime and added that to the point they earned for an overtime loss to Uxbridge the Sunday night before. They turned out to be important points even though their oppo- nents picked up the wins in each game. But against Lakefield Satur- day, the MoJacks came out fired up. This was as close to a must- win situation as they've been in this season. They responded by Jumping out to a 5-0 lead, head- ing into the third period and fin- ished with an easy 6-2 win. Dar- ryl Bricknell got the game started with a powerplay goal when he slipped a low shot be- tween the post and Chiefs' net- minder Mike Coons to make it 1-0. Gavin Cochrane and Leslie assisted. The second goal was a sign of things to come for Dennis and Leslie. A Dennis pass sent Les- lie into the Chiefs' zone with only one man left to beat. Leslie faked a move to the outside, fooling the defenceman, and then brought the puck in front of the net where he steered it around the Chiefs' goalie for his first of the night. In the second period, Todd Stirling made it 3-0 when he took a pass from Mike Pigeau and redirected it underneath Coons. At that point, the game got out of hand for the Chiefs. They had the upper hand in powerplay opportunities all night, but the MoJacks' penalty killers wouldn't allow them any quality chances. In fact, Dennis made the Chiefs regret the man advantage. He scored his 20th goal of the year at 4:44 of the second period with the MoJacks shorthanded. This time Leslie returned the favor, setting Den- nis up in front of Coons, where he finally banged it into the net on his second try. The period ended with the MoJacks up 5-0 when Leslie struck again, and it was no sur- 'prise that Dennis played a big part in the goal. It came with only 33 seconds left in the peri- od and, more importantly, with the ModJacks shorthanded again. Leslie intercepted a Chiefs' pass in the MoJacks zone and hit Dennis flying down the ice with a pass. Dennis just missed scoring on his breaka- AUTO ELECTRIC REBUILDERS/INSTALLERS BENEFIT FROM 16 YEARS EXPERIENCE 80 van Caro: 985-8406 or Precision --- = =m -_-- =m == Auto Electric & General Repair Alternators * Starters * Air Conditioning Rebuilt on the Premises Using All New Parts Full Warranty - Class "A" Mechanic 139 Water Street PORT PERRY © Sigh street auto glass & trim Id, Written '~ Ld All Work Guaranteed * INSURANCE WORK - SAVE up to F50O°° with most insurance companies with this coupon at time of purchase 3 Locations * Mobile Service On any one replacement WINDSHIELD Insurance Claim 985-8507 Port Perry 668-2003 Whitby way, but managed to get to the rebound and set up Leslie in front of the net where he wrist- ed it into the corner of the net. Pigeau rounded out the scoring for the MoJacks injthe third pe- riod when his wraparound goal from Bricknell made it 6-1. The Chiefs' scoring came in the third period with Jeff Gaskell and Randy DeCarlo scoring late in the game. The four-point night pushed Leslie over the 60-point mark for the season. He should finish third in league scoring with Dennis finishing close behind with 52 points, in fourth place. Leslie was happy with his pro- duction, but said he was just playing his role. He was more pleased with the team effort. He's looking forward to resting a little with the bye they earned. "We need the rest. We learned our lesson last year when we didn't have it (the bye)," Leslie said. He also cred- ited Menzies with the success of the MoJacks this year. "He's a good coach. He's young and that helps because you can relate to him more," Leslie said. "This is a pretty close team here and he's part of that." TODD DENNIS Dennis has enjoyed a lot of success on the ice with Leslie this season. They each seem to know where the other one is whenever they play. Dennis - tried to explain the chemistry they show. "We play two differ- ent styles so it works out," he said. "I'll do the work in the cor- ners and then find him outside. He'll do the skating and we seem to find each other pretty well." Dennis credits Menzies with a lot of his success. Menzies turned Dennis into a forward when he started coaching the team and it really helped Den- nis. "He has a lot of confidence in me, putting me on the power- play and penalty killing," Den- nis said. "And my confidence is up with him (coaching) because he believes in me." The Star would like to thank Jeff "Fritter" Brown and Scott the "Statistician" for their help throughout the year. Their ex- pertise and knowledge have been invaluable in covering the ModJacks this season. PORT PERRY STAR CLASSIFIED AD DEADLINES 'MONDAY - 12 NOON Doors over Trenton Sunday, Jan. 29 the Overhead Doors Peewees hosted the Trenton Golden Hawks in game three of the best of seven se- ries. The Doormen were up two games to none coming into the game and Trenton were determined to break the "goose egg, and break it they did. The Doormen looked disorganized with very scrambly play. They were unable to generate any offense as there was no evi- dence of the skating, passing and hitting that was seen in the two games prior. Trenton opened the scoring early yan Fraser was partially screened by his own players on a goalmouth scramble. Port Perry did have a three- on-one a short time later but failed to capitalize on it. At 3:43 of the first the Doormen got their first goal on a power play. Kam Cooper shovelled a pass to Scott Cunningham who scored on a backhand. But the tie was short lived as Trenton capitalized on a power play opportunity to move up 2-1 at the end of the first goaltender period. The Doormen started the second with a little more hustle and maintained good pressure in the Trenton end. They man- aged to tie the score 2-2 when Chris Jones shot from the point and Wade Ritchie tipped in the rebound. Trenton didn't take that lying down and less than a minute later scored again when a "trailer" was left unattended, to take the lead 3-2. John Bacon had a good chance on a partial breakaway shortly after but Trenton came back again and scored a shorthanded goal to take a 4-21ead. The third period saw the Doormen pick it up a little more but a two goal deficit was hard to overcome. Matt MacMaster moved Port Perry to within one when he retrieved his own re- bound and scored, however, a later penalty by Port Perry re- sulted in another power play goal by Trenton to give them the two goal lead again. The Doormen had their chances when Trenton took two pen- alties with a minute and a half left in the game. With goalie Ryan Fraser on the bench in favor of an extra attacker, the Doormen applied tremendous pressure on the Trenton net- minder who stood his ground. With 3.2 seconds left in the game Murphy Irvine scored on a hard slapshot to cut Trenton's lead to 5-4 but it was too late. Hopefully, some hard work at practice this week will get the team back on track. An improved passing game and renewed commitment to team offense rather than individual rushes may help turn our luck around. Good luck next Sunday in Tren- . ton. in the first period when Peewees win From Page 24 Only one minute into the third period, Brad Johnston scored his second goal of the game assisted by Jeff Ashton and Deryk Campbell, and the great passing and solid team work continued with a goal by Braden Tarbotton assisted by Chad Lance and Steve Wy- gerde. Derek Campbell blew one by the Markham goalie at 5:21 assisted by Sean Jeffrey and Chad Lance. Final score Port Perry 5 - Markham 1. Congratulations to Brad Johnston who won M.V.P. for this game. It's on to the championship game for our Legionnaires! Game 6 - Championship Legionnaires vs Milton As There was an eerie feeling in the air...which team would be the first to make a mistake, causing that all important first goal. Both teams were having their fair share of chances. A goal for either team would somehow turn the tide and so it did! At 5:20 of the first, Sean Jef- frey pocketed a "beaut" from the blue line. Seems a shame had to wait so long tor Sean's first goal of the season but it couldn't have come at a better moment. Brad Johnston and Deryk Campbell picked up assists. Next goal was scored at 14:10 of the first period, when Deryk Campbell picked up a loose puck in his own end, rushed the single defenceman and lifted it over the Milton goalie. Brad Johnston picked up another as- sist. Chris Monsma made some great saves in net for the Le- gionnaires. By the end of the second period, Milton's frustra- tions were running high and they found themselves fighting off a penalty. Brad Johnston scored on a nifty passing play set in motion - be Greg Bruton and Ryan McQuade. The score was 3-0 to begin the third period but not for long. At 12:15, Brad John- ston scored again from the slot, assisted by Greg Bruton and Ryan McQuade. Sean Jeffrey made a "super bowl" tackle that wound him up in the penalty box. Shortly thereafter, Milton came back and scored on a screened shot making it a 4-1 hockey game. At 5:34 Milton squeaked in a rebound to make the game more interesting. The last minute seemed like an eternity, when finally Brad Johnston secured his hat trick and sealed the championship. Assisting were Deryk Campbell and Nick Pelyk. Not to be out- done, Milton came back with one more goal to make the final score 5-3 for the Legionnaires. Greg Bruton was the MVP of the game. For their effort, the boys received a team trophy and banner as well as individual tro- phies for the mantle! Congratu- lations boys and herty than- kyous to our terrific coaching staff: Garry Geer and Ed Teno and manager Ralph McCullogh. The Legionnaires play their next game against Cobourg on Friday, Feb. 3 in Cobourg. If necessary, they will be back in action against Cobourg in Port Perry on Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 7:30 p.m.
