NIT 8- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, January 31, 1995 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" MNR officers lay charges By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star Officers with the Ministry of Natural Resources have laid 48 charges on Lake Scugog so far this winter under various regulations and acts. Although the changing weather has created havoc with those using the lake for recreation, the first two weekends of January saw an abundance of activity on the lake, resulting in the charges. According to MNR conservation officer Mitch Phinney, 90 per cent of the charges the office has laid this winter came on the January 6- 8 weekend, when the first major snow fell. The remaining 10 per cent were laid the following weekend. Although the number of on lake charges is well below last season's 168 charges, unseasonable weather has forced snowmobilers and ice fishermen off the lake for extended periods of time. Conservation officers spent the first two weeks of the month speaking with 375 anglers. As a result 37 charges were laid under the Ontario Fisheries Regulations Act and the Game Fishing Regulations Act. Of those charges, 24 were for fishing without a license, 12 for having too many lines and one for obstructing a fisheries officer. Twelve warnings have also been issued under these acts. Charges have also been laid under the Motorized Snow Vehicle Act, as 11 riders have been charged and an -. Last year 128 charges were laid under the fishing acts, up considerably from 1992's 59 charges. Under the Motorized Snow Vehicles Act, 28 riders were charged and 12 were charged under the Off Road Vehicles Act last year. Although these numbers are higher than this year's total they were substantially lower than 1992, when 135 charges were laid. Ministry officials are back out on the lake and will once again be watching fishermen and snowmobilers. Officer Phinney is hoping for a cold weekend where his team can get back on the lake to check on several things, such as the several ice huts which found their way through the ice during recent mild temperatures. The Ministry knows of 10 huts, in the areas of Port Perry, Westshore Marina and Caesarea, that are still floating in the water, with owners unable to safely retrieve them, Officer Phinney said. Officer Phinney believes there are more which went through in the area of Goreski's Lakeside Recreation, but ice conditions last week did not allow the officers the freedom to check the huts in that location of the lake.
