co "A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, Tuesday, February 7, 1995 - 23 a RE seems, Ami Yo On Feb. 3, the Malmont Farm Atom As hosted Lindsay and for the first time in the series the home team won a game. It took an overtime period, but, despite blowing a three-goal lead, the "Green Machine" controlled the overtime period and scored two goals to complete a 6-4 victory. This gives Port a 3-2 series lead. In the first period, Port scored on a power play as Mike LeFort and Jamie Smith assisted on Dean Van Camp's backhander over the goalie's shoulder. Tre- vor Weisflock scored number two from Steve MacLennan af- ter good behind-the-net digging by Mark Duncan who got the puck out front. Port went up 3-0 while shorthanded as Tim Jones passed to Trevor Lance who, in turn, shovelled the puck ahead to Dean who outgunned the Lindsay netminder. D'Arcy made several key saves with his team shorthand- ed to back up the efforts of his forwards. Defencemen Dane Gray, Scott Duncan and Tyler Houthuys were doing their best to build a fortress around their goal crease. In the second period, Lindsay outscored the Malmonts three goals to one of ours. Port killed offa two-man disadvantage ear- ly on but Lindsay then scored on abreakaway. Later they caught a fluke goal and then another on a two-on-one break. With the score now tied, the game out- come looked in doubt. Fate smiled on the "Greens" as Dean was handed a shorthanded breakaway after blocking a shot at his blue line. He deked to his backhand for the goal to put us up 4-3. In the third period, Lindsay got the equalizer on a power- play after a Lindsay player took a "Bill Barber dive" to put us shorthanded. The score was then tied at four-all but no team could grab the winner in regula- Atom As take playoff lead tion time. Steve Macl.ennan made some nifty blue line plays and Jeff Tarbotton was working hard to set up his linemates. In overtime, the early play was scrambly, the players on both sides were showing fatigue from their enthusiastic play. Like a flash, however, the Mal- monts went up 5-4 as Justin Moffatt scored on a sharp an- gled shot to the far side with an assist from Trevor Weisflock. Trevor then potted the insu- rance goal just 30 seconds later as he went down the left wing on a three-on-one break. He elected to shoot and found the top gloveside corner. A demoral- ized Lindsay squad headed off with their second loss in a row. Overall, the team wasn't quite as sharp as in their last win over Lindsay but we'll take it nonetheless. D'Arcy got the coach's nod for "Best Effort". Way to rebound, Green Ma- chine! Results Wednesday Afternoon Ladies-Feb.1 Team Points: Brews 41, Chaps 33, Clops 32, Barts 22, Squids 20, Aces 20. The Lions drew first blood at 11:28 of the first period when Mike Blakey drilled a shot past Mike Weyland who was making his first appearance between the pipes. That goal stood until part way through the second pe- riod when Don Campbell's solo. effort tied the game at 1-1. The tie lasted for eight sec- onds as Mike Blakey's second of the game put the Lions in front tostay. The rest of the game featured end to end action and terrific goaltending by Mark Lott and Mike Weyland. A terrific, well played game. Panthers lose but still lead series On Monday, Jan. 30 the Port Perry Midget 1 team, sponsored by Lakeside Golf and Hockey Centre, entertained Stouftville for game three of the playoffs at the Scugog Arena. With the Panthers up three points to one a win tonight would put the Panthers in a good position to advance. The Panthers came out "roaring," in an effort to take control of the game and take control they did! Their efforts paid off as Jay King slid home the first goal to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead after the first period. Assisting Jay on the goal were Kenton Le- The Panthers continued the pressure in the second and in- creased their lead to 2-0 as Shane Norton finished off some smooth passing plays from Matt Hobbs and Ian Shrigley. In the third the action was end to end as Stouffville attempt- ed to get back in the game. The hard efforts were thwarted by solid goaltending from John Babcock. As the period continued Port furthered their lead to 3-0 as Shane Norton scored his sec- ond of the night on a nice setup from Jeff Clarke. Soutffville finally solved John Babcock to bring the score to 3-1 for the Panthers. Solid defence kept Stouffville at bay the rest of the way as the Panthers secured the win with their Ian Shrigley did the honors with Jay King and Jeff Clarke as- sisting, Stouffville managed to score one more but the Pan- thers iced the game and a 5-2 win with an empty net goal by Da- ryl Bourgeois. Ian Shrigley and Jeremy Geer drew the assists It was a different story for the boys when on Feb. 2 the Pan- | thers travelled to Stouffville for game four of the series, need- ing only one point to advance. Unfortunately Stouffville had otherideas as they skated to a 4-1 win. The Clippers certainly pulled out all the stops and they sure had a boisterous crowd of fans behind them that night. Despite the valiant efforts of the Port Perry supporters to be heard above the noise to cheer our guys on, Kenton LeFort scored the The game was very close until late in the third as the referee decided to ruin a good game with some questionable calls or Unfortunately, with this loss the Panthers now lead the se- ries five points to three, so now it's on to game five on Monday, Feb. 6 at the Scugog Arena. Hopefully, the tables will be turned and it will be Port Perry's turn to do all the cheering as the Pan- thers put those Clippers to rest!! Minor Novice action Compton Cable Minor Novice returned to the ice surface after a brief hiatus from any action. On Saturday, Feb. 4, they came up against a select team from Uxbridge. Mark Carnaghan played well in net for Port Perry, stopping a clear-cut breakaway. Ashley Lucas played an excellent two- way game with many offensive chances as well as breaking up Uxbridge plays even from her knees. There were excellent passing plays between Derek Goreski and Cassidy Weber.
