The Latcham Centre was packed for the meeting, which saw the four candidates vying for the Grit nomination answer- ing questions from a panel and then from the audience. . Port Perry High School teacher Dave Robinson, Bowmanville ambulance work- er Douglas Bird, Whitby furni- ture store owner George Khouri and Clarington councillor Mary Novak had their first opportu- nity to face members of the Durham East Liberal riding Association during the two- hour session. Most questions centred spending, health care and edu- cation, and the candidates were non-confrontational in their first meeting. Questions from the floor could not-be directed to a specific candidate, as names were drawn for responses. But Mr. Robinson found him- self on the receiving end of two questions that were intended to gauge the moral stances of candidates. A question about health care funding for abortion drew groans from the audience, but Mr, Robinson received an ova- tion when he declared his com- mitment to providing quality health care to all residents of the province. And he said he would press for previews of literature from groups like the AIDs Committee of Toronto before funding was provided when a question o_S--vretsex=. o Local Grits gear up for election a FZ J) ™ ] ] a a fl ore with first all candidate meetin fie 4] PORE BPE [CV around issues like provincial regarding pamphlets produced by the activist group was put forth. All in all candidates were cautious and upbeat, appearing to want to give local Grits a look at their platforms and style. After the meeting organizer Ken Carruthers said the tone of the evening -- and the enthu-\ siasm displayed by candidates and those in attendance -- bodes well for Liberals in Durham East. "It's very positive right now; it's very, very positive," said Mr. Carruthers. "I truly believe the battle will be between the Liberals and Conservatives." He said the local riding asso- ciation will hope for continued popularity of the Liberal party province-wide as they attempt to elect the first Grit candidate ever in the riding this year. ee eam tm i +m IN Rey VATS PL 0 gr es SATURDAY & SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 11 & 12 SNOWPLOWING SNOW FLAKE GR SE A Removal, Sanding, Salting Snowblowing Residential ~ Commercial Contracts Available ~ Seniors Discount ToT] Tr - nos 0 ROME AMAT 8 only re pipet. a Fe en en Daily & Weekly Rentals J 10/1 by : SCOTT PROPERTY SERVICES F730 Shs Sires Rob Scott 985-2535 Mobile (905) 435-3098 985-9312 I HM TT PORT PERRY DON'T MISS THESE TWO GREAT DAYS OF WINTER FUN AND EXCITEMENT IN PORT PERRY.
