"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, Tuesday, February 14, 1995 - 21 -- ee ~ -. SPORTS Report from ball association On the date of Feb. 5, 1995 the Board of Directors held a very busy and long meeting lasting well into night with an assortment of items on the agenda. The largest and most time consuming parts of the night happen to be the items that take up most of the time of the board; sponsorships, fund- raising, and registration. This year the registrar is Louise Pilkey who will be enter- ing all participants onto her computer with a program de- signed for softball. As in the past we will be attempting to of- fer a full range of lineups at all levels of the house league. This will go from T-ball up to the youth slo-pitch as was the case last season. Of major concern is the drop off of participants in the 12 years of age and older categories. Last year the associ- ation had to pool together what were historically the squirt and peewee age groups in both gen- ders. One of the major programs for the next several weeks is to gain some more players at these ages as well as informing every- one that there is ball available 'at bantam and midget as well, if people are willing to come out and sign up. Within the pages of this paper you will find an ad per- taining to the registration dates at the local arena in early March. As well we are attempt- ing to do something a little dif- ferent this year by supplying a mail-in registration form also to be found within this paper. It is the same standard form which the association has used in re- cent memory and can be mailed to the address at the top of the form. Again we will be offering fundraising tickets with the as- sistance of Pineridge Sports who will also have registration forms available for pickup and delivery. In regards to the mail- in form, once received the regis- trar will assign ticket numbers to the registrant who will then be contacted for pick up or deliv- ery of the tickets. Those requir- ing a receipt or further informa- tion can contact association president Dave Dalton at 985- 3838. As per the advertisement, this year's costs have not risen from last season's fees. Anyone wishing to partici- pate as a coach or helper can also contact Dave at the above number as everyone knows these people are of great impor- tance tous. We are currently de- ficient in a couple of positions pertaining to our travelling rep clubs. Last year's bantam girls, who played in the Cobourg-Port Hope area are at this time with- out aleader as are ourlatest en- try into the Oshawa City and District league, a new midget Doors top Trenton On Thursday, Feb. 9, the Peewee Overhead Doors team elim- inated Trenton from further playoff action by defeating them by a score of 4-2 and capturing a four games to one win of the se- ries. Thursday's game saw Ryan Fraser between the pipes for the Doormen and in the first period, Ryan did not see a lot of action as our peewees controlled the play and came out of the period leading 3-0. Wade Ritchie banked a goal in off the post for Port's first goal. Reid McTaggart assisted. Scott Cunningham gave the Doormen a 2-0 lead when he tipped in a rebound from a shot by Murphy Irvine. Kam Cooper also had an assist. Port Perry's third goal came when Matt MacMaster cut around the Trenton defence and deked the goalie. Scott Brownson had the helper. Port Perry actually scored another goal later that was called back and Scott Cunningham hit the goal post for another good chance. The second period was a different story though as Trenton roared back and took over the play. Ryan Fraser had to be plen- ty sharp when Trenton had a two-man advantage. Murphy, Wade and Grant Hooker all displayed great penalty killing. Trenton also had a breakaway and Chris Jones hustled back to knock the puck away. Unfortunately though, a penalty gave Trenton their first goal. The Doormen didn't have a lot of chances in this period but Joel Van Camp made a nice shot on net after a setup by Russ Brown and Ryan Fraser was tested frequently. The third period opened with Trenton moving ahead by an- other goal to pull within one. Our Doormen pulled up their socks though and managed to keep them from scoring more. Murphy Irvine gave Port Perry an insurance goal when he scored on an end-to-end rush. Trenton pulled their goalie with 1:26 left and were unable to get another thanks to saves by Ryan Fraser and good backchecking. Final score 4-2 for Port Perry. On Wednesday, Feb. 8, the Doormen had travelled to Tren- ton where they won their third game on a 7-2 romp over the Golden Hawks. Chris Thompson had a good game in net for the Doormen and kept Port Perry's lead intact. The first period ended with a 1-0 score for Port on a goal by Murphy Irvine from the point. Scott Brownson assisted. Port Perry scored two more goals in the second to Trenton's one. Murphy Irvine scored his gecond on a rush from his own end. Joel Phoenix assisted. Scott Cunningham banked one in off the goalie when Kam Cooper set him up on a two-on-one. David Justynski and John Burnett kept the Trenton forwards off balance in Port Perry's end to help Chris Thompson. In the third period, the Doormen blew the game open scoring four more goals. Kam Cooper scored on assists from Wade Ritchie and Scott Cunningham. Russ Brown flipped oneinon a pass from John Bacon. Wade Ritchie scored with assists to Joel Phoenix and Scott Cunningham and Wade scored his second goal of the game when he skated out of the corner and shot the puck past the goalie. Trenton scored one goal in the third mak- ing the final score 7-2 for the Doormen. The Overhead Doors Peewees now advance to the quarter fi- nals where they will meet the Alliston squad. Good luck in the geries!' Work hard!! squad. Last year's Juvenile team has now moved up to play junior in the Oshawa league. As well, at the grass roots level we will accept as many as we can to get to assist in our house league endeavors. There was an ad pre- viously placed in this paper back in November asking for those wishing to coach to mail in a resume to the association's post office box. At the house league level it is not required to have an NCCP certificate but those who do are welcome. For fundraising, as men- tioned above we will again be handing out the draw tickets with costs the same as last sea- son. Further to that we will again be hosting a couple of ex- hibition games down at the lakefront in mid-July with an international flavor as we will be entertaining the New Zea- land national squad, and the ISC champions from Wisconsin to take on some local lads from Oshawa, Greenbank, and the Toronto Gators. Through numerous discus- sions over the past several months there will be several other new features to this year's programs. Each team in house league will also be offered an ad- ditional time period per week for practices. This has been made easier to handle with the new diamonds at the arena to go along with all our current facili- ties at the Legion and local ~ schools. There will also be a mandatory skills development day for all registrants to be held in Port Perry on May 6, and one in Seagrave the following day, May 7. This program will be as- sembled by Director of Rep Teams, Wayne Venning who will be assisted by a number of our carded coaches. For those sponsors who have not yet been contacted please bear with us as we are in the process of contacting all of you by phone and in person. We have not forgotten about any of you as you are a vital part of the association with your assis- tance. At the end of last year's season a thank you was posted in the paper, but unfortunately one of our sponsors was missed, so at this time we would like to express those thanks to Kount- ry Bulk and Deli. Keep an eye out in the paper for further notices as per play- ing times and locations as well as several other items on the go with the association such as hosting of the OASA annual convention PORT PERRY & DISTRICT jd MINOR SOFTBALL REGISTRATION Saturday, March 4th, 1995 10:00am - 2:00pm Sunday, March 5th, 1995 10:00am - 2:00pm Scugog Township Arena $50.00 per player + $20.00 fundraiser fee $130.00 per family of 3 or more + $40.00 fundraiser fee Forms available at Pineridge Sports & the arena or call Dave Dalton 985-3838 Late Date Rates as of March 25, 1995 $65.00 per player + $20.00 fundraiser fee $160.00 per family of 3 or more + $40.00 fundraiser fee This ad sponsored by Pineridge Sports Shop Ltd. Port Perry Plaza 985-2839 (EEE EE EEXENE NK) Malmont Farms Atoms defeat Oak Ridges On Feb. 10, our Atom As hosted a mixed-age Atom squad from Oak Ridges. Earlier in the season our boys had gone down to defeat against this team on their ice. Fresh off our series win over Lindsay our adrenalin levels were still high and the result was a 7-3 Malmont exhibition game victory. The Malmonts skated extremely well in the first two periods as well as outmuscling their opponents but then lost focus in the third period in which they were held off the scoresheet. Our offence was led by the "Rookie Line" as Jeff Tarbotton had a hat trick, Trevor Lance had a goal and three assists and Justin Moffatt had a goal and four assists. Our other goals were by Dean Van Camp (from Dane Gray and Scott Duncan) and a solo effort by Dane. Mike Koury got the win between the pipes for the "Green Ma- chine". Lots of hard work and hustle was shown by forwards Ja- mie Smith, Trevor Weisflock, Mark Duncan, Adam Moynes and Mike LeFort as well. The unsung heroes on defence did their jobs reliably as well with gritty efforts by Tyler Houthuys and Steve MacLennan. The team will continue to work hard to preserve the momen- tum of their four-game winning streak. Auctioneer Novices beat Stouffville 3-0 The Pearce Auctioneer Nov- ice Team hit the ice Saturday night in their second playoff game against the strong fore- checking team from Stouffville coming up with a 3-0 win. 'The goaltending team of Scott Honey and Kurtis Wagar was outstanding, along with strong defensive pairs of Justin Shinn, Joey Lane, Justin Koury and Gordon Smith earning them- selves a shutout in this fast paced game. Our offense began early in the game when Teddy Howarth picked up a pass from Chet Mar- tin and put it by the Stouffville netminder. The offensive line up of Patrick Lewis, Kevin Rob- ins, Teddy Howarth, Jordan Froats, Alex Nicholaou, Chet Martin, Lucas Fraser kept the pressure in the Stouffville end. With 20 seconds left in the sec- ond period Kevin Robins passed the puck to Gordon Smith who shot it into the net. Late in the third period with 54 seconds left Gordon Smith took advantage of the Stouffville empty net and earned himself his second goal of the game. With lots of hard work and team effort the Auc- tioneers made this a very excit- ing game. It was another fast-paced game for the Auctioneers on Sunday, when the boys met the Peterborough Nationals in Pe- terborough for their third play- off game. With outstanding defence from Joey Lane and Justin Shinn; Justin Koury and Gor- don Smith, Peterborough's scor- ing chances were significantly reduced. The strong defence along with good saves by Scott Honey and Kurtis Wagar kept the Nationals to only one goal. Alex Nicolau played a strong offensive game, as did Chet Martin, Teddy Howarth and Jordan Froats, back checking as well as moving the puck up. Port Perry scored two goals 1n the first period, the first by Gor- don Smith with Justin Koury picking up the assist; the sec- ond by Kevin Robins with the assists going to Lucas Fraser and Pat Lewis. Justin Shinn scored an unas- sisted goal from just inside the blueline in the second period with Kevin Robins also scoring an unassisted goal 27 seconds later to give the Auctioneers a 4-0 lead. Peterborough's goal came 41 seconds later and Ke- vin Robins finished the scoring with 25 seconds left in the sec- ond period, with Justin Koury assisting. The third period was scoreless for both teams and the final score was 5-1 for Port Perry.
