14- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, February 28, 1995 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" I ETTERS Not a casino To the Editor: Last week in one of the ar- ticles in the Port Perry Star I read of some "utterings" about a casino on Scugog Is- land coupled along with dumps in Durham East! Please be advised that there isn't any casino being built on Scugog Island. That facility on Scugog Is- land is a Bingo and Monte Carlo gaming hall, with wa- iy set at a maximum of I am not aware of any pro- posal whereby a garbage dump site is slated for Dur- ham East. That issue is now history. Gordon L. Mills, C.D.,.M.PP., IDAYVIONID D4.5 Cove 00 (white) Homosexual 'gift' to the world is death To the Editor: In response to Rebecca Voth's defense of homosexuality in last week's Port Perry Star Opinion column titled The Language of Hate, I would like to say that I fully support MP Alex Shep- herd's untiring stand for "straight" America and tradi- tional family values. Ms. Voth's lesbian sexuality, she states, is a "gift." Unfortu- nately, the Gay Community has shared this "gift," unsolicited, with the rest of society. Joan Anderson, Chairman of the Canadian AIDS Society (CAS), declared the deadly disease to be primar- ily a homosexual phenomenon. The median age of death for homosexual men was found to be 42, without the incidence of AIDS; if AIDS was a factor it is 39 years. That's 30 years short- er than that for married hetero- sexual men. Yet, we often hear the argument that homosexu- als are no different than hetero- sexuals. They fall in love and are caring individuals who are just attracted to the same sex; they benefit society; they are "normal" people who pose no threat to communities at all. Homosexuals often portray themselves as "victims" of "ho- mophobia" and lay claim to mi- nority status, demanding spe- cial rights. Just for clarification: The purpose of "minority status" under the law is to protect people from preju- dice on the basis of truly neutral qualities, which ought not to af- fect anybody's reasonable judg- 'ment. Sexual activities that gays engage in are not neutral. They have public health conse- quences. They have financial economic consequences. They are not to be equated with the truly morally neutral condition of a particular racial or national origin people. Voth's accusation of hating homosexuals is simply not true. I have had three very close i & i Q. Why do some people seem to go through the grieving process so quickly and easily and others are devastated for a very long time? A. The process of grieving is unique to each individual. Don't make the mistake of comparing one grief-stricken individual with another, for their uniqueness is as distinct as their facial features or their fingerprints. Each person expresses grief differently, and this inevitably includes the time it takes for them to work through their grief. *Questions from classes are answered editor of AfterLoss, the monthly grief-recovery help letter. It is the ho- mosexual lifestyle that took them and the threat it poses to society, that we abhor. It ap- pears that they have declared "war" on their own sex! AIDS is a preventable dis- ease. It is not like Alzheimer, heart disease or stroke. It is a lifestyle, behavioral disease or self-induced. According to the Centre for Disease Control in Atlanta, 100 per cent of all patients diag- nosed with the classical symp- toms of AIDS in 1980 or before are now dead, and the number is doubling every six months. AIDS is pandemic, with no cure insight. These developments carry ominous implication for the health of our country since ho- mosexuals can be found in every profession and occupation. They drill our teeth, perform our surgeries, serve our food, teach our children, and provide their blood for our hospitals. Last year gay rights militants held their annual parade down Fifth Avenue in New York. Thousands came out of their closets and bathhouses to par- ticipate. On a side street, two Christian men carried placards about Jesus' ability to forgive sins. They were cursed and ridi- culed, subjected to obscene ges- tures, and spat upon by each wave of marchers. (Did gays say something about rights?) It ap- pears those wanting tolerance, are themselves most intoller- ant. Gay activist Michael Swift, writing for the Bostom Gay News (Feb. 15/87) says "We (ho- mosexuals) shall sodomize your sons, emblems of your feeble masculinity, of your shallow dreams and volgar lies. We shall seduce them in your schools, in your gymnasiums, in your sports arenas, in your sem- inaries, in your youth groups, in your theatre bathrooms, in your army bunkhouses, in your truck stops, in your all-male clubs, in your houses of Congress....your sons will do our bidding. They will be recast in our image. They will come to crave and adore us...Tremble hetero swine, when we appear before you without our masks." How is straight America to re- spond to their demands for love, tolerance and compassion, when it appears that they have their own, demonstrative Lan- guage of hate. Carol Switzer, Port Perry, Ont. Arrest is no surprise To the Editor: While I was driving home from work on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 1 a.m., a local all news radio station announced that David Millgaard has once again been arrested and charged with as- saulting a young boy. They also said that a bail hearingis set for Monday. I hope after the bail hearing is over that his self-serving moth- er and the rest of his support team will once again go on Na- tional T.V. and tell the whole of Canada what a good boy David is. Make no mistake: This is one individual who needs to be kept aneye on. : It appears that the tragedy befallen the French, Mahaffy, Carpenter and DeVilliens fami- lies isn't already justification enough to do so.
