"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" Drops dope, An Oshawa man talked his way out of an impaired driving charge, but couldn't beat a drug bust when he dropped his stash in front of officers in Port Perry Saturday. Durham Regional Police took a man to Community Memorial Hospital after a single-car accident in the Port Perry area around 5:40 p.m. March 4. A report said officers were concerned about his state, but the driver convinced them he had not been drink- ing, but had taken some med- ication earlier in the day. Some hours later officers went back to the hospital to check on the man. As he was putting on his coat, a stash of hashish fell out of a pocket and landed on the floor, police said. A 37-year-old Oshawa man has been charged with pos- session of a narcotic. Drug fraud Police have charged an Oshawa woman with fraud after an attempt to obtain drugs with a phony prescrip- tion sheet was made in Port Perry. : Police said a woman attend- ed a pharmacy on Paxton St. Feb. 27 around 9:30 a.m. and attempted to get high-powered Tylenol tablets with a pre- scription. : Police report C A check revealed that a doctor's signature on the slip had been forged, police said. A woman has been charged with fraud. Three arrested Police have charged two local men and a young offender in connection with a number of snowmobile thefts in the area. Two men from Scugog Island and a youth from Port Perry were charged with pos- session of stolen property and are to appear in court later this month, police said. There have been a high number of snowmobile thefts throughout Scugog this win- ter. "Meanwhile, a 1994 Ski Doo machine was stolen from a Scugog Point Rd. residence last week. Police said the machine, which had been stored beside the home and was visible from the road, went missing some- time between Feb. 25 and March 4. Mailbox theft Police were called to the View Lake area last week to investigate a possible theft from a mail box. Police were called to Coleman Court Friday after- noon (March 3) after a resident Oshawa man charged discovered his mailbox had been entered, and mail was strewn about. It's possible some cheques were also taken from the mail- box, police said. Car fire A local man's car sustained serious damage when it caught fire last week. Police said an Old Simcoe man was westbound on Hwy 7A around 1 p.m. last Thursday (March 2) when he heard a loud noise and noticed his car beginning to fill with smoke. He pulled to Dodge Caravelle to the side of the road and fought the fire with a fire extinguisher, police said. Scugog firefighters also attended. The blaze caused damage to wiring under the dash, police said. Also last week: 0 A motorist in a van pumped about $12 worth of gas into his vehicle at the self- serve station on River St. in Seagrave, then took off with- out paying Friday afternoon, and 0 Beer bottles were thrown at a Lorne St. residence around 2 a.m. Saturday (March 4), causing minor dam- age. Township launches search for new chief By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star The Township of Scugog has accepted the resignation of its fire chief and have began an ac- tive search for a replacement. Don Steele, who handed in his resignation to the township last week, has been the township's fire chief for more than two years. Although his resignation did not give a reason for his depar- ture, Fire Committee Chairman Ken Gadsden said there were some communication difficul- ties in regards to some aspects ofthe budget. "But, I believe there were greater reasons than that," Councillor Gadsden said. Councillor Gasden met with Chief Steele this week for more than one hour and discussed many points with him, but has accepted the resignation. "For personal reasons he is re- signing. We will be sorry to see him leave. I know he will be missed, but these things hap- pen and we have to deal with them," he told the Star Monday morning. Councillor Gadsden credits TOWNSHIP OF SCUGOG PART-TIME FIRE CHIEF The Township of Scugog is located in the Region of Durham, just north of the City of Oshawa along Lake Scugog. Population 17,880. The Township is rural in nature with an urban area (Port Perry) of 6,300 people being the hub and requires a Part-Time Fire Chief. The successful applicant will be in charge of two modern fire stations, well equipped with fire fighting apparatus and 60 volunteer fire fighters.
