10- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 7, 1995 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Local trucker spreads OTA sa By Jeff Bower Special The Ontario Trucking Associ- ation has launched a new public relations campaign which in- volves a driver from Blackstock. Warren Hunter is a contract driver with Rennie Transport in Gormley and was recently se- lected to be one of 10 of the OTA's Road Knights. For the next two years, Mr. Hunter and his colleagues will travel the rovince, discussing safe driv- ing habits and providing infor- mation about the industry dur- Ing presentations to community groups, driver education class- es, business clubs and others. "What we're doing is trying to let everybody know how safe (truck drivers) are out there THE and to make everyone feel more comfortable when they are out on theroad," Mr. Hunter says. While Mr. Hunter will be making most of his presenta- tions to drivers or those learn- ing to drive, they won't be the only ones learning about truck- ing and truck safety. Yesterday (Feb. 27) the Ren- nie Transport driver. spoke to his daughter's Grade 1 class at Cartwright Public School "in Blackstock - an event he was really looking forward to. Last November the OTA held a two-day conference after which the 10 Road Knights were selected from a group of about 30 finalists. The selection panel was comprised of repre- sentatives from the police, gov- GET HER OFF TIGHTROPE! "plans to pass along to drivers at ernment, the media and the OTA. Each of the finalists were required to demonstrate an ability in public speaking as well as provide an essay and submit to an interview. An ap- plicant's driving record was also a factor in the selection process. Since then, members of the team have gone through further training which included addi- tional coaching in public speak- ing. . Though it was reported re- cently that an alarming number of trucks operating in the prov- ince are unsafe, Mr. Hunter is quick to deflect this criticism. While ' his may be true of oth- er types of trucks, he explains, the tractor trailer haulage in- dustry is a safe one which ad- heres to strict safety codes. For example, drivers must submit to road tests and medical exami- nations every three years. The individual trucking firms take even further steps to en- sure their trucks are safe. "At Rennie Transport they are real- ly on top of it," he says, adding that specifications and safety rules at the company could "make a person's head spin." "It's also up to the drivers to make sure that they are safe out there in order to make every- thing better on the road," he adds. ; But while Mr. Hunter says that truckers are doing what they can to improve road safety, he is quick to add that they can't doit alone.
