"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 7, 1995 - 15 BY RS > PORT PERRY STAIR Sr ORTS Overhead Doors advance to semis after ousting Alliston On Monday, Feb. 27, the Doormen headed off to Alliston to play game four of their best of seven quarter-finals series. The Doormen were leading the se- . a ries two to one. The Port Perry boys started the game in high gear and with- in less than two minutes scored to take an early lead and before the dust settled to end the first period, the Doormen led 3-0. Joel Phoenix scored Port's first goal when he found himself with the puck and half the Allis- ton net to shoot at. Joel Van Camp and Matt MacMaster had the assists. Kam Cooper scored the second Port Perry goal on a wrist shot when Wade Ritchie sent him in all alone. Chris Jones also had an assist. Wade Ritchie scored the third goal when a shot by Joel Van Camp bounced hard off the back- boards and Wade hustled to the puck before the goalie cleared it. Russ Brown also had a good chance when he went in all alone and the Alliston goalie came up with a big save. In the second period, Alliston and the Doormen traded goals. Alliston scored their first goal on a power play but just a min- ute later, Scott Cunningham gave Port Perry their fourth goal on assists by Russ Brown and Kam Cooper. Port Perry went up 5-1 on a goal by Scott Brownson with an assist by Grant Hooker. At this point, Ryan Fraser, who had played well, gave way to Chris Thomp- son in the net and Chris was forced to make a tough save right away. Unfortunately though, Alliston scored their second at the end of the perioa " but Port led 5-2 going into the Techstars sweep Trenton in four On Feb. 25 the Techstar Bantams took their 2-0 series lead into Trenton as they did in game one in Trenton the Techstars came out flat. Ryan Puckrin managed to get the Techstars off to a 1-0 lead on his 30th goal of the year off a faceoff as Scott Harper teed one up from the point and Puckrin got the rebound and putit home. After that the Techstars left goalie Doug Short basically alone. Short stopped everything to keep the score 1-0. It was the middle of the second when Trenton final ygotone past him. After the second the Techstars went to the dressing room with a 1-1- tie and an upset coaching staff. Whatever the coach- es said must have worked because early in the third Puckrin got his second of the game when Baxter passed one out from the corner and he one-timed it home to make it 2-1. Dave Kamminga made it 3-1 when he picked up the puck at his own blue line and went around the whole Trenton team and beat the goalie with a shot from the faceoff. Trenton got one back as Doug Short showed the first signs that he is human and let in the first soft goal we've seen in months. Dan Lyons made it 4-2 on an empty netter after nice head- man passes by Puckrin and Baxter. The remaining time on the clock saw no scoring but a few Trenton players were given penalties including one who was given three games for a scuffle after the buzzer. No Techstars were given penalties. On March 1 it was back to Port Perry were the Techstars could take the series in the form of the sweep. Once again the Techstars failed to show up for the first peri- od. Doug Short was once again the only thing keeping the Tech- stars in the game. At the end of one it was still 0-0 but the Tech- stars were being outplayed big time. Successful skaters Several Blackstock Figure Skating Club members were successful when they attended the Unicorn Fair in Oshawa third. : Feb. 25. Adam Brain also assisted on this one. Gainey got his second of the game (28th of the year) to make it 2-0. Dillian Weber got the assist. Trenton made it 2-1 in the last minute of the third. In the third Troy Campbell won the faceoff back to the point and Scott Harper teed it up and blew it past the Trenton goalie tomakeit 3-1. Trenton made it 3-2 on a controversial goal that had the Techstars jumping. After a time out the Trenton team pulled their goalie. Troy Campbell rang a shot off the glass and Scott Sanderson picked itup and putitin to end the game 4-2. Although it wasn't one of their better games they managed to end the series and extend their winning streak to 12 games, dating back to Jan. 18. The Techstars are now awaiting a team to play in the next round. We'll keep you posted on game dates and times. made some nice saves to pre- serve the 5-2 win for the Door- men. This gave the Doormen a 3-1 lead in games to return to Allis- ton on Thursday, March 2. The Port Perry boys came out on the ice with a case of "bus legs" as they were not skating well and were unable to break out. The Alliston squad kept the Door- men hemmed in their own end for most of the first seven min- utes. Chris Thompson, who had a terrific game in net, got warmed up early as he was test- ed frequently. Pineridge Atoms advance Congratulations are extended to Port Perry's Pineridge Atom B team on their convincing victory in Alliston on Satur- day, that clinched a spot for our boys in the Provincial Semi- Finals. The win completed a three game sweep for Pineridge. The series opened. in Alliston a week earlier with a 6-2 win for Pineridge. : Game two, held in Port Perry took on a similar tone as Pine- ridge again showed their superiority by turning Alliston away 6-3. Saturday was do or die for Alliston and to their credit they certainly never gave up. Co Alliston opened the score very early in period one, but the tone was set quickly when Matt Skerratt rifled a beautiful wrist shot high to the blocker side of the Alliston netminder just two minutes after Alliston had taken the early lead. As- sists on Matt's goal went to Dylan Harper and Jeff Simpson who picked up his first assist of three on the day. Following our first marker, Pineridge exploded for three more goals before the first period ended. Glenn Thompson took a pass at the side of thenet and beat the goaltender on the short side just moments after Matt's opener. Simpson and Skeratt assisted on the second goal. Our third strike came from Spencer Churchill assisted by Wes Laingmaid and Mike Thompson. Before the period ended Gerrard Timmers had put the game out of reach for Alliston, assisted by T. J. Robins. In the second period Alliston continued to work hard and it fi- nally paid off with a goal that put them back in the game brief- ly. Their comeback was cut off abruptly when Spencer Church- 'ill notched his second of the game assisted by Derek Bond. That goal put Pineridge ahead 5-21ate in the second period. Before the period was over Matt Skerratt scored his second of the day putting Pineridge up 6-2. Assists went to Jeff Simpson and Glenn Thompson. Third period action saw Alliston test goalie Shane Fisher on several occasions but Shane had decided it was time to "close the door." Shane was called on numerous times to make some quality saves. Our defense made up of Mike Wiseman, Derek Bond, Mike Thompson, Dylan Harper, Garrett Brown and Ger- rard Timmers should be given a great deal of credit for the sweep against Alliston. They work hard every shift, constant] y clearing the front of our net and make very few mistakes. The consistent effort from forwards Mike Milligan, Joey Schembri and David Halward continues to create many scor- ing opportunities for our boys. It was a pleasure to watch this series. Coaches Paul Milligan, Randy Wiseman and Steve Churchill have these boys playing as a unit. It is exciting to watch. Come on out and support our Pineridge Atom B squad as they move on into the Ontario Semi-Finals against Eien Way to go Pineridge! Good luck with your next series.
