Lys 16- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 7, 1995 " Scugog 's Community Newspaper of Choice" . PORTS MoJacks ont by David Stell The wmanville Eagles have now won seven games in a row in this year's playoffs. The Uxbridge Bruins couldn't steal a single game from the Eagles when they were swept out of the way in the first round. Now the Port Perry ModJacks are on the verge of being swept, with a 5-2 loss Sunday night in Bowman- ville. Down three games to nothing in the series, Port Perry now faces the tough task of beating Bowmanville four games straight in order to win the "league championship. With the Eagles playing incredible hock- ey right now the MoJacks' sea- son is in danger of ending to- morrow when game four of the series takes place here in Port Perry. ModJacks' coach Brad Menzies will now have to keep the team optimistic and forget about some questionable refer- eeing Sunday as he gets the team ready for game four. "It was a lot better effort to- night," he said. "We'll practice Tuesday and try to get back into it Wednesday night." It will be a challenge to fight back against a team like the Ea- gles, but Menzies will have to rely on the team to rebound and come out fighting tomorrow. "If we don't win the next one, . obviously we're done," he said. "So, hopefully, we get a good ef- fort. Its pretty tough to be down three games, but you've got to take it one game at a time and if you win one then you can go for two." Game three started off a lot like game one, with Bowman- ville jumping out toa 2-0 lead in the first period. The Eagles have been putting the pressure on in front of ModJacks' goal- tender Rick Hutchinson all se- ries. Well-timed passes and ac- curate shots have added up to a nightmare for Port Perry. Even with Hutchinson making high- light saves, the Eagles were giv- en too many chances in close on Port Perry's net for the early lead in the game. But the Mo- Jacks capitalized on their best chance of the period when Mike Pigeau found the back of the net with 5:30 left. Trevor Bremner and Steve Laird went into the corner to dig out the puck and fed it out to Pi- geau racing towards the front of the net. His slapshot beat Ea- gles' goalie Barry Crawford to make it 2-1 going into the sec- ond period. After a tough 6-0 loss on Friday, Port Perry was finally back on the scoreboard and the hard work carried over into the second period. The Eagles would score first in the second period to take a two-goal lead again at 3-1, but ModJacks' centre Keith Leslie wouldn't let the Eagles get away just yet. His powerplay - goal, assisted by Pigeau, got the - MoJacks within one of Bow- manville with Kevin Vivian running interference in front of Crawford when the shot found the net. Again Port Perry would go into the intermission only trailing by a goal at 3-2, but the third period was all Bowman- ville. . The Eagles frustrated the MoJacks time and again by keeping Port Perry away from Crawford and any quality chances to score. Then Bow- manville turned around and scored two more goals midway through the period to push the lead to three goals in the game and take a stranglehold on the 'series at three games to noth- ing. : : Port Perry captain, Gavin Co- chrane, finally had enough of the refereeing late in the game after Bowmanville scored their fifth goal. The goal looked to have been tipped in by a high stick and Cochrane let the refer- ee know it. The captain went af- ter the referee to plead his case, but was denied. After more shouting, Cochrane was given a game misconduct and was forced to leave the game. He was discouraged with the loss, but he thought the team played well. "If we could have gotten a couple of bounces our way, it could have been a totally differ- ent game," he said. "They've got really fast forwards and they're tough to contain. If we play a lit- tle aggressive on them we can SPORTS REPORTS will continue in The Weekend Star=-- easily slow them down to our pace." Cochrane was on the wrong end of a big hit in the series opener last Tuesday, but it doesn't appear to have slowed him down. "I was pretty sore that night, but I had a few he verge of elim stitches and it doesn't bother me anymore," Cochrane said. The MoJacks might look out of it right now, but with their backs to the wall Wednesday's game could turn into a classic. Port Perry has shown that they can play at the Eagles' level in all of their regular season ames so game four on the Mo- 5 acks' home ice could have a dif- ferent ending than the first three. Look for the MoJacks to fight back and get back into the series tomorrow. . The Pearce Auction Major Novice finished up their round robin series by losing their last three playoff games. The forwards for the three games, Pat Lewis, Kevin Robins and Justin Shinn; Jordan Froats, Teddy Howarth and Alex Nicolau; Chet Martin, Lu- cas Fraser and Tyler Weisflock, made some good offensive plays. The defence, Joey Lane, Justin Koury, Ryan Hnatko and Gordon Smith had some strong checking to do against these fast-moving teams. : On Tuesday, the Auctioneers Pearce Auction Novice wrap up round robin travelled to Cobourg where . they lost by a score of 5-3. Kevin Robins scored Port Perry's first goal on a nice pass from Justin Shinn and their third with the assist going to Ryan Hnatko. Pat Lewis scored the second goal, assisted by Kevin Robins and Justin Koury. On Friday night, the Auction- eers hosted Lindsay. The fast- moving, strong checking Lind- say team won by a score of 5-2. Port Perry's goals were scored by Pat Lewis and Jordan Froats with assists going to Justin Shinn, Teddy Howarth and Jus- tin Koury. The last game was played in Belleville against the undefeat- ed Belleville team. Although the Port Perry boys tried hard, there wasn't a lot they could do against the much more experi- enced team. The Auctioneers only goal was scored by Justin Shinn. Kurtis Wagar and Scott Honey, sharing the goaltending duties, had many shots against them in the three games and both made several great saves.
