Grant Hooker and John Bur- nett were effective in clearing the puck out and Chris Jones laid on a couple of hard checks to help get the momentum go- ing. At 7:37, Port Perry got their first shot on net and ended up being up one goal. Russ Brown dug hard in the corner and made a nice pass to Kam Coop- er, in front of the net, who tipped it in. Scott Brownson also had an assist. Chris Thompson was again forced to make a couple of good saves to keep the 1-0 lead intact. The second period opened with the Doormen getting a big break when an Alliston player was tossed and Alliston had to play shorthanded for seven minutes. Port Perry's power play was somewhat disorga- nized and struggled to get an of- fence started. David Justynski had a good shot from the point and Russ Brown and Scott Brownson had a two-on-one. Fi- nally, with only 49 seconds left in the power play, Port scored to take a 2-0 lead. David J. passed the puck to Wade R. who passed it out front and Kam got his sec- ond goal. Port Perry continued to press and Matt MacMaster and Scott Cunningham both had good chances. Grant Hook- er actually scored on a hard shot from the point but it was called back due to a high stick. With 25 seconds left in the second, Chris T. made a great toe save to end the period 2-0 for Port. In the third, the "rough and tumble" Alliston boys came out hard but the Doormen re- mained cool under pressure and John Bacon gave them their third goal on a wrist shot. Joel Phoenix and Reid McTaggart assisted. However, Alliston hadn't given up and scored their first just seconds later to make the score 3-1 for the Doormen. Port Perry replied with another goal though to pull ahead by three again. Wade R. scored on a wraparound with assists to Kam and Scott C. Alliston scored one more late in the third on a shot that was deflected in and then pulled their goalie for an extra attacker. This strategy was defused though as Alliston took another penalty. Murphy Irvine "iced" the game with an empty netter to give Port Perry the 5-2 win. The Doormen showed considerable control when under fire and had a pen- alty free game to aid the win. This win moves the Port Perry Doormen into the semi- final round against a team to be determined. Congratulations, boys! Watch this paper for de- tails. Cartwrigh JEFF MITCHELL / PORT PERRY STAR The junior girls volleyball team at Carwright High school have every reason to smile after winning the Quinte Classic tournament in Belleville Feb. 28. The win capped a great top- four finish for the girls, who are in their first season of competition in their loop. Legionnaires semi-final action Game Two Semi-Finals vs Collingwood On Tuesday, Feb. 28 the Le- _gionnaires played host to Col- lingwood in game two of their best of five, semi-final series. Port leads the series 1-0 going The final games of the regular season were played on Feb. 256 with Van Camp and Port Novice house league action award for the Re/Max team for this game. De- fensive awards go to Gary Penstone and Russell Perry Printing squaring off for the first game of the day. Van Camp opened the scoring in the first period on a scramble in front of the net with the puck dribbling in off the stick of Jesse ischtian. There was no more scoring in the first because of great defensive plays by Adam Smart and Brent Meeking for the Printing team and Matt Sutherland of the Van Camp team. Early in the second period Justin Sanders tied the game with a nice flick shot over the shoulder of the Van Camp goalie. Assists went to Chris Jackson and Mitch Truax. Kellen Jackson in net for Port Perry Printing made a great split save in the period to keep the score tiedat1-1. The game looked like it was going to stay tied as there were some exciting plays in the third period. Chris Jackson made a great diving stick check to knock the puck off of an opposing players stick who was coming in on a breaka- way. Tyler Webb in net for Van Camp made a nice blocker save on a breakaway late in the third that inspired his team to take the puck to the other end of the ice and score the winning goal. Tyler martin passed the puck from behind the net to Darryl Copithorn in the corner who passed it out to Jesse in front of the net to make the score 2-1 for Van Camp. Bill Britt and Mike Aquanno share the good hustle award for the Port Perry Printing team and Ryan O'Leary gets it for the Van Camp team. The second game of the day was a high scor- ing affair as Haugens and Re/Max took to the ice. Jesse Mullins was flying for this gage as he led his Re/Max team to victory scoring five als and picking up one assist. Great team esse! Clay Trainor and Mitchell Sauder both had great games as they picked up two goals and one assist each. Single assists went to Ryan Hockley, Brook MacKenzie, Collin Hol- ditch, Chris Milligan, Maggie Robbins, Cory Mitchell and Craig Kehoe. Way to pass the uck guys. P Matt Kamminga led his Haugens team as he icked up a hat trick for his fine play. This boy as lots of hustle and is a treat to watch on the ice. Way to go Matt. Matthew Charron picked up a goal and an assist with other assists going to Reid Harris, Jeremy Morrison and Chris Clarke. Blake Cunningham gets the good hustle Lee for the Haugens team and to Kevin Dalby and Darren Tapper for the Re/Max team. Brady Gray and Kyle Geer shared the goaltending du- ties for Re/Max while Sam Bennet was between the pipes for Haugens. The round robin playoff series started on Sat- urday, March 4 for the Novice House League. First game of the day saw Port Perry Printing and Re/Max play. Port Perry Printing opened up the scoring at the five minute mark of the first period on a goal by Kevin Gloster with the as-- sists going to Craig Simmonds and Bill Britt. One minute later Re/Max tied it up on a goal by Jesse Mullins with the assists going to Brook MacKenzie and Robbie Walker. The score was tied 1-1 at the end of the first. -The rest of the game was all Port Perry Print- ing as the team passed the puck very well. In the second period Justin Sanders and Bill Britt scored with the assists going to Brad Lay- zell, Craig Simmonds and Kevin Gloster. In the third Craig Simmonds and John Love picked up a goal and an essist each. Mitch Truax picked up a lone marker. Jon Breen picked up two assists with Kevin Gloster and Bill Britt picking up an assist each. : The second game of the day was very exciting to watch as it ended in a 2-2 tie with Haugens tying the game up with less than a minute to go. This game had great end to end play. Tyler Webb in net for Van Camp and Sam Bennett for Haugens had great games as they were called upon to make some nice stops throughout the game. Van Camp opened the scoring in the first peri- od when Jesse Mischtian scored with the assists going to Tyler Martin and Wesley Scalletta. Haugens tied it up halfway through the second eriod on a goal by Matt Kamminga. David De- oning and Gary Penstone picked up the assists on this one. The third period was very exciting to watch as there were numerous scoring chances, however Sam and Tyler held strong with the help of their defensemen. With five minutes to goin the game Matt Sutherland put Van Camp out in front. Jesse and Tyler Martin picked up the assists. Matthew Charron was the hero of the Haugens team as he scored a beaut of a goal on a picture perfect pass from Matt Kamminga to tie the game with 59 seconds to go. There were some pretty exciting kids on the ice and some very proud parents in the stands. into this game. Collingwood set the tone,' when they scored at the 14:24 mark of the first period. Port goalie, Mike MacLennan found himself to be a busy target for the Collingwood sharpshooters. At 11:01, Deryk Campbell fed a nice pass to Brad Johnston, who fought his way through the de- fence to tie the game at one. Aa- ron Chambers also picked up an assist, Both teams had really picked up the pace from game one and each had some awe- some scoring chances. At 13:09 of the second period, Collingwood picked up a penal- ty on which the Legionnaires power play capitalized. Brad ohnston picked up his second of the night from Ryan McQuade and Jeff Ashton. The third period started off with Collingwood scoring while shorthanded to tie the score at tow. Minutes later, after some hard work, Chad Lance scored a beautiful goal assisted by Bra- den Tarbotton and Steve Wy- gerde, putting Port back in the lead. Collingwood was determined to play out the clock and play they did! They came back with two more goals to win the game 4-3 and tie the series. The Legionnaires had the home ice advantage Thursday night for the third game of their series against Collingwood. With the series tied, both teams wanted this win. After a delay getting the game underway, the two teams came out of the gate just flying. Asin the two previous games, Collingwood was on the board at just 12:43 of the first period. Both teams were digging hard to get control of the puck. The forward line of Greg Bruton and Chris Skerratt completed some nice passes moving the puck down the ice, where Ryan McQuade was ready and wait- ing to send one by the Colling- wood goaltender, tying up the game at 6:29. Jeff Ashton received a nice pass from defence partner Aa- ron Chambers and turned up the burners, heading up the middle of the ice leaving the Collingwood players behind, however the Collingwood goalie was ready for him. Chris Mon- sma was making some pretty awesome saves in the net keep- ing the score even at one. 'Port put the power play into _action when Collingwood re- ceived two penalties at 12:43 of the second. Just one minute lat- er Brad Johnston beat the Col- lingwood netminder, assisted by Greg Bruton and Nick Pelyk. Less than one minute later the awesome threesome put it all together a Brad Johnston who in turn sent it to Greg Bruton who tucked it in the corner of the net putting Port ahead by two. - Collingwood took advantage of a Port penalty and slipped one by the "Bartman" at 8:37. To add a little more excitement to the game, Nick Pelyk let a smoker go, splitting the puck in two pieces. : Brad Johnston, who was playing an outstanding game, fired an off balance shot by the Collingwood goalie increasing Port's lead to two, assisted by Nick Pelyk (his 'third of the game) and Ryan McQuade. Both teams headed off the ice for a well-deserved break. Ryan McQuade opened the third period scoring his second goal of the game at just 13:18 of the third period, assisted by Jeff Ashton and Greg Bruton. This gave Port a comfortable lead of 6-2, however, Collingwood was not going to let up. They sent the puck over Chris Monsma's shoulder at 10:29 of the third and exactly one minute later managed to tuck another one in to make it a one-goal difference for the third time in this three game series. A timeout was called by Port for a few quick words from the Legionnaires coaches. Colling- wood pulled their goalie at 1:48 to give them the extra attacker. Defenceman Sean Jeffrey had his stick knocked out of his hand and was doing everything in his power down on all fours trying to prevent Collingwood from getting control of that puck with 17 seconds left in the game. Sean's efforts landed him in the penalty box and Colling- wood called a timeout to plan their six men against four strat- egy. However, their efforts were unsuccessful as the Legion- naires leapt control, ending the ame with a 5-4 win. This puts ort ahead two games to one in this best of five series. gain.
