By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star Just months after leaving municipal politics, former Scugog councillor Harvey Graham has assumed leader- ship of the Ontario Cattleman's Association. Mr. Graham was elected president of the Association, which represents some 40,000 people involved in the beef production industry, at its annual general meeting in Toronto Feb. 23. He had been serving as vice-president and was widely expected to assume the president's seat; he was unopposed for the nom- ination. He assumes leadership at a time when the OCA is preparing to lobby govern- ment, and deal with ongoing international trade issues. "It's a little bit unpre- . dictable in this industry," he said when asked to speculate on his agenda for the next year. "You never know when an issue is going to come up that's going to require some lobbying." Topping the list of OCA activities will be dealing with present trade issues and watching the spring election that's predicted in Ontario, Graham named head of .Cattlemens' Association said Mr, Graham. The OCA's involvement in the provincial vote will include continuing to lobby politicians for lease revenue sharing for the old 'Toronto stock yards. In addition, there will be in- house strategy to com- plete, said Mr. Graham. "Trying to adapt our produc- Te tion to GRAHAM consumer needs is an ongoing issue" that will involve farmers, packer and retailers, he said. His duties will likely involve extensive travel, he predicted: "I expect to be away from home two or three days a week." Mr. Graham left municipal politics last year, when he announced he wouldn't be running in the November, 1994 elections. His Area Councillor's seat had been phased out to create a new ward councillor's seat in Port | Perry. March. Sign changes on way in Port Perry By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star Motorists will notice a few changes soon as several stop signs are erected in place of yield signs. A township bylaw passed last week will see Balsam and Bay Streets made into through streets between Old Simcoe Road and Simcoe Street in Port Perry. Currently while traveling along Rosa, Bigelow or Co- chrane Street, vehicles must make stops at Paxton and McDonald Streets, while the re- mainder of the street is a throughway. The change will see Paxton, Balsam, McDonald and Bay Streets which run east/west (downhill), made into through streets and Bigelow, Rosa and Cochrane traffic will see stops signs at each intersection. Another signage change will see the corner of McDonald and Ottawa Streets, at the Port Perry High School corner, changed from a yield sign to a stop sign. Apple Valley residents may also be seeing a change in road signs at the corner of Lakeview Drive and Carnegie Street. Several area residents have complained that with motorists using Lakeview Drive as a shortcut to Simcoe Street, the corner has become a dangerous one for traffic and pedestrians. Several residents claim the current yield sign. is not doing its job in slowing traffic. Several incidents have occurred where cars mounting the curbs have resulted in damage to lawns, trees and fencing. According to Ward 2 Council- lor Marilyn Pearce, the situa- tion was brought before the Roads Committee last week and the committee will be recom- mending to council that a three- way stop be erected at the inter- section.
