4- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 7, 1995 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Twenty-nine! Local man notches his first-ever perfect hand Twenty-Nine. That's all you have to say to get the average cribbage play- er's heart fluttering. And that perfect score is what was dealt Lee Sturman the other night when he sat down to play a few hands at his home in Port Perry with his wife Carol, brother Ken, and sister-in-law Eleanor. Lee has played crib for upwards of 40 years, and has never seen the mythical 29 in his hand, or anyone else's. So one Friday night (Feb. 24) when Carol dealt him three fives and a Jack of Clubs -- this is four- handed crib, remember, so each player gets just five cards -- he was hoping for, but not expect- ing, the 5 of Clubs to come up when the deck was cut. It was up to his partner Ken to cut, and -- ta-da! -- there was the 5 he needed. The 5 of Clubs was necessary, as every crib player knows, to make the Jack in his hand count for the extra point. "I never figured that 5 would come up," he said. "I never got anything more than a four all night." At 55, Lee has played a lot of crib, and never saw a 29 before. Now he figures he's about seen it all. "I don't think I'll live to see another one," he said. The deck -- a souvenir from Donald Trump's Taj Mahal casi- no -- has been retired, and there could be plans to mount the winning hand somehow. When the foursome sat down to play last Wednesday night, there was no question of re- shuffling the deck that yielded the perfect hand. "I think I'll just crack another one open," said Lee. Veteran councillors, who have been through the budget process before, are hopeful a zero increase can be reached and are confident if there is an increase it will be minimal. "We are working very hard to- wards a zero-based no levy tax increase. I am comfortable that we will meet our goal," Ward 2° Councillor Marilyn Pearce said. Ward 3 Councillor Ken Gads- den echoed her sentiments say- ing that council is striving for a zero increase and feels they can achieveit. "I feel we will come in at zero, or pretty close to it. Based on what I know now I certainly hope if there is an increase it will be no more than minimal." Joyce Kelly, serving her first term as Ward 4 Councillor is also hopeful of a minimal in- crease. "It would be wonderful if it is zero, but we do have to be realis- tic. Prices go up just like with a home budget. It will be low. I can't guarantee zero, but it will be minimal," she said. Ward 5 Councillor Karen Puckrin feels budget talks are progressing well and says that council "is definitely trying to hold itdown."" "All departments are co- operating and I'm hopeful that we can come in at what we ex- pected. I am looking at zero or comingin close toit," she said. All councillors gave credit to | the different departments for their diligent work in bringing in low budgets. "There are very responsible budgets coming in. No one is complaining if cuts have to be made," Councillor Pearce said following Friday's budget talks.
