"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 14, 1995 -9 Building on rise in Durham A total of $662.0 million worth of building permits were issued in Durham Region in 1994, representing a 64 per cent increase over 1993. A.L. Georgieff, Durham Re- gion's Commissioner of Plan- ning recently presented a re- port to Regional Planning Committee detailing Durham Region's building permit activi- ty in 1994. Durham's increased construction activity in 1994 was due to more new house pro- duction and the launch of con- struction on the new Whitby Psychiatric Hospital, as report- ed earlier. In 1994, permits were issued for 3,918 new residential units. Although this represents 52 per cent more new units compared to the 2,675 producedin 1993, it is below Durham's 10 year aver- age of 5,100 units per year. In December 1994, permits were issued for 851 new units, a December monthly record. This record activity was largely at- tributed to Durham school boards passing Development Charge By-Laws that came into effect on Jan. 1, 1995, said Mr. GeorgiefY. Of i the total units initiated in 1994, 62 per cent (2,421 units) were single detached. While this is below Durham's 10 year average of 70 per cent single de- tached, it does indicate that a greater variety of housing types were produced in 1994, namely 590 semis, . 646 townhouses/ multiples and 261 apartments. Fewer apartment units were in- itiated in 1994 due to reduced apartment construction activi- ty by the public (assisted hous- ing) sector, according to the re- port. The construction value of per- mits issued for non-residential uses during 1994 totalled $145.7 million, an increase of 38 per cent over the $105.7 million worth of permits issued in 1993. In 1994, 1.8 million square feet of new non-residential floor- space was created, an increase of 565 per cent over the 1.1 mil- lion square feet produced in 1993, but below Durham's 10 year average of 3.2 million square feet per year. Durham gained in its share of 1994 GTA building activity compared to 1993, and exceeded its average annual activity in the GTA compared to the past 10 years.
