His exploits as singer, precus- sionist, guitarist, songwriter, and comedic backwoods philos- opher have bewitched, bothered and bewildered thousands. Hank is a multifaceted per- former. Just when you've decid- ed he's strictly a comedian, he'll turn around and deliver an old country song in a way that is disconcertingly emotional. Hank's washboard, the "Stra- do'various," is festooned with bells, horns, pots and pans - even a duck-call. Folk's eyes bugs out when they see it, and their ears bug out when they hearit. Hank kicks, dances, and flails arms in a display of per- cussion wizardry which leaves 'em rolling in the aisles. Hank writes songs with titles like "Polyester Polly Lit a Tire Fire in My Heart" and "I'm a Honky Tonk Donkey from Co- boconk." It's clear that this man knows something about life that has escaped the rest of us. Everybody but Stompin' Tom Connors that is, who invited Hank to sing "Stompin" Tom for Prime Minister" at a recent con- cert. Influenced by the three great Hanks - Williams, Snow and Thompson, - along with other classic country/rockabilly per- formers, Washboard Hank also specializes in resurrecting gems from some of the great ob- scure heroes of country music, like Rose Maddox and Yodelin' Kenny Robers (Yodelin' who?) Hank and his band, the Honk- ers, use this combination of vin- tage country, and witty and wily originals to dish up some great - "hillbilly boogie" which will get you moving in time in no time. Also appearing in the Green- bank Hall Saturday will be Bob Snider. A well-established per- former, he has become well known for singing and writing from the heart about real people and the lives they live. Show time in Greenbank is 8 p.m. Tickets are available in Port Perry at Circular Sounds and Irwin Smith Music and Blue Heron Books in Uxbridge. For more information, call 985-8351 or 852-7578. TT The ever-popular Washboard Hank brings his Honkers to the Greenbank Hall for a rompin' good time this coming Sat- urday night. See the story for details.
