'MoJacks' season ended at hands of the Eagles by David Stell All good things must come to an end and for the Port Perry MoJacks, another good season has ended. But it might have been a great season if not for the Bowmanville Eagles. Port Perry ended their season last Wednesday night with a disheartening 7-2 home ice loss to Bowmanville. The Eagles' win gave them a 4-0 sweep of the Central Division champion- ship and continued their unde- feated streak in this year's playoffs. They now wait for the ville just had too much momen- tum and too much firepower. Port Perry finally broke the les' shutout bid near the Ea ~end of the second period. Darryl Bricknell was first to try a breakaway chance on Crawford with 1:54 left in the period, but the Eagles' goalie snared the shot with his glove hand. Forty- six seconds later, Steve Laird was given an identical chance and scored the ModJacks' first goal of the night. His linemate, Mike Pigeau, helped make it happen. Pigeau made a diving. \ winner of the Picton vs Napan- _stab at the puck in his own zone ee series that started last week. Wednesday's game foll familiar pattern tha formed in the first thre¢ games of the series. Bowynanville scored two first period (goals for an early lead in the game and coasted to the finish line. Port Perry was overwhelmed by the Eagles' speed and accuracy on offence. Bowmanville left the. first period leading 3-0 in the game and with a three games to nothing lead in the series, time was running out for the Mo- Jacks. The Eagles solidified their stranglehold on the ModJacks by shutting down the Port Perry power play. The ModJacks couldn't score with the man ad- vantage in the first period and that became a crucial factor. Port Perry might have been able to stay in the game when they were given a two-man ad- vantage to end the first period, but the Eagles still wouldn't al- low a quality shot on goaltender Barry Crawford. In the second period, Bow- manville kept on steamrolling. Former MoJack, Shannon Todd, scored his second goal of the game on a wraparound from behind the net to make the score 4-0. Goaltender Rick Hutchinson left the game after that goal and Chris Faulkner replaced him. The scores in the four games of the series might indicate that Hutchinson was having trouble, but he played well in every game. Bowman- and was able to, from flat on his stomach, pass the puck between two Eagles out to Laird speed- ing down the ice all alone. Laird's low shot hit Crawford's stick, bouncing straight into the air, over the goaltender and into the net to make it 4-1. Pigeau has made some great moves when he's been flat out on the ice. He explained how he .8et up Laird on the breakaway. "I saw the defenceman pinching in so I decided to dive out and get it," he said. "Laird was yell- ing so I tried to put a little more on it so it would go out in front of him. I thought he was going to putit over the net like he did be- fore, but he ended up putting it away." With Bowmanville leading 6- 1in the third period, Port Perry finally scored on the power play. Todd Stirling rifled the puck into the net after a scramble in front of Crawford. His steady play was an asset to the Mo- Jacks this season and he ex- plained the chemistry the team has. "We're like a family," he said. "They're a good group of guys to play with and everybody gets along." The seventh goal for Bow- manville was the worst in the series. Killing a MoJack power play, an Eagle defenceman at- tempted to clear the puck down the ice after a faceoff at the Bowmanville blue line. His powerful slapshot flew down the ice and started to bounce in front of Faulkner only to jump the goaltender's stick and go into the net. The goal deflated the spirits of thé MoJack fans ii" Heads up! oo. "Dean Van Camp (standing) and Chris Jones of R.H. Cor- attendance, but the MoJacks nish were among the Scugog winners in district finals for the Kinights of Columbus free throw competition in Whitby will just have to forget it now as their season ends. Keith Leslie, the team's lead- ing scorer all year, will most likely be back next year as an over age member of the squad. He felt the Eagles did their job so far as limiting Leslie's effec- tiveness. "They really took me out of "the game." he said. "I didn't -get that many chances and I would have liked to score more to help the team." Bowmanville coach, Mark Watson, considered Port Perry their toughest competition all year. He didn't expect a sweep of course and complimented the ModJacks afterwards. "It's quite a rivalry these two teams have," he said. "They're a good club and they work hard all the time." March 8.
