"A Family Tradition for. 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 14, 1995 - 19 Se PORTS _ On the weekend of Marth 4 and 5, Port Perry Minor Softball held their annual registration dates at the local arena. Over the course of the eight hours, a very disappointing tally of just over 100 participants regis- tered. In the past couple of years, 200 plus made the jour- hey to the rink for the two-day affair. Even with the numbers down at this time, the associa- tion is confident of its normal turnout of some 450 players. The mail-in registration form which was enclosed in this newspaper three weeks ago re- sulted in a number of families making application along that route. If you have failed to regis- ter your children to date, there are still a number of ways of do- ing it. Pineridge Sports is still Late registration offering forms and have the fundraising tickets at their dis- posal. At that time, they will be making assess- ments of all the children as to their current skill levels plus . expressing where each may re- quire further enhancements. The local umpiring associa- tion, in conjunction with the Oshawa area, will be serving up a junior development clinic in Courtice on April 22 where some of our younger players can earn a certificate enabling them fees for ball begin to take to the field at either the home plate or base positions. For the cost of $15 to enter the program, each individual will be certified, insured and offered the clinic itself on some of the fundamentals of umpiring. Many of the players who served in the capacity of umpire last season, or those willing to try it this year, are asked to attend this seminar and should contact vice-president Dave McTaggart at 985-2301. For example, with certification a peewee-aged um- pire could in fact do behind the plate of a mite-age game and so on up the line. The program March 25 serves youths to age 19 with the intent of some of them hopefully taking the full Softball Ontario program for accreditation. Late date registration fees kick in as of March 26 with an increase in costs. The cutoff date is April 2,-as it takes a lot of time to get teams made and uni- forms ordered for all the teams, so please hurry and get those forms in. Juveniles advance FromPage 17 takes and needless penalties. Port's game plan, which was to get the puck out of our end as quickly as possible, no inside the blue line passes, in our end get over centre ice and get the puck on net to force a faceoff, worked effectively in the small confines of the Beeton Arena. Final score 2-1 for Port. Ian McCready, a call-up from the Midget 1 squad, opened the Jeff Card got w : the winner with a bullet drive from about 26 feet out, which completely handcuffed the Bee- ton goaltender. In the third period, Captain Rat proved to be The Key-Bar boys put on a great display of defensive hock- ey the rest of the way and ad- 'vanced to the finals with a nice 2-1win. At this time, no dates are set for the finals but they will prob- ably start this weekend in Port > or Parry Sound. Parry Sound advanced to the finals winning scoring in the first period, as- sists going to Gord Bentley and Chad Garvock. Beeton scored _-- SHL playoff action continue The great Sunday weather gave us a hint that spring is just around the corner and with it, the SHL championship weekend! With that. in mind, action this week saw all teams get down to business to challenge for the various playoff berths. At the conclusion of the five Sunday games just one team, the Fitzgerald Clippers, continue with their amazing unbeat- en streak for this year's playoff rounds! Comets vs Aces Game one saw the Compton Comets over- take the Taylor Aces in the standings with a 5-3 victory. The Comets have been "lost in space" for the last few weeks but got things back in or- bit this week as Dave Dickson clicked for four goals and Brian Burns added a single plus three assists! Ken Davison was in on a pair of markers with a single assist going to Tom Barnes. By the way, it's good to see Tom Barnes back in action during the playoffs after suffer- ing a broken leg late in the season schedule! For the Aces it was replies by Todd Wilbur, Ken Little and Mike Kane. Dave Brownson had a pair of assists while single helpers went to Kane "Legend" Sheehey and Al Bonner. Chargers vs Phantoms Game two left the fans happy as the Monsma Chargers and Pineridge Phantoms played to a 4-4 draw in a head-to-head repeat from last week. These two teams have been battling it out all season and this game proved to be yet another playoff classic. The Chargers had the crowd buzzing as they took a 4-1 lead late into the second period. But then the Phantoms regrouped and came storm- ing back with three unanswered goals to gain the 4-4 tie. John Robertson with two and singles by Bill Bridge and Brad Hurst gave the Chargers their four goals. Bridge, Bob Lee, Lee Wilbur and Dave Thompson all had single assists apiece. For the Phantoms it was Colin Asselstine with a pair and singles by Brian Samis and Bill Van Camp. Samis with a pair of assists and sin- gles to Asselstine, Jim Fowler, Clarence Ste- henson, Mike Geer, Fred Moffatt and Robert Van Camp completed the Pineridge comeback in this exciting matchup. Clippers vs Sharks Game three proved to be an aggressive en- counter as the Pov orad Clippers maintained their first place playoff standings with a 5-3 vic- tory over the Van World Sharks. After a victory last week those Sharks were hungry for yet an- other but the Clippers had other ideas. Doug Bronson led his Clippers with a pair of goals and a pair of assists for the "four point' outing. Glen Hudson and Derek Fitzgerald along with "Roc" Owen added singles to keep the Fitzy unbeaten record alive! Hudson with a pair of assists and singles by Derek Fitzgerald "and sponsor, Carl Fitzgerald finished the Clip- per scoring. For the Sharks, Phil Cochrane was in on all the scoring as he potted two and assisted on the other by Gary Lance. Greg Fitzgerald and spon- sor "Tate" Adam both had a pair of assists while Jay Adam added the single. Blazers vs Hawks Game four was yet another great matchup as the Harrison Blazers and the J&D Hawks played to a 1-1 tie. Both teams are playing well in the playoffs and goaltenders Ken Harman for the Blazers and Ray Gibson for the Hawks are playing outstanding. The Blazers continue to show why they were first in the league stand- ings as they played the Hawks to a tie in this one with just a few players on the bench! It was the Blazer goal early in the first period by John Harman from Darcy Milligan and Jim Park that stood up throughout the game and looked to have the slim victory for the Blazers. However, with a mere 1:43 left in the third, Doug Suppelsa netted the equalizer from Keijo Kinnunen and Ed Olsen to give both teams a well deserved playoff point. Devils vs Gamblers The final game of the day saw the Pizza De- light Devils jump back into the thick of things with a 4-2 victory over the sagging Crandell's Gamblers. The Gamblers are sure having the "playoff woes" but put the pressure on the Devils early in the second period on a goal by Glen McCoy from Mark Decosta and Carl Durham. The Devils then came to life with four goals in a row to take command of the game. Bob McEachern started it off with a "cannon" fol- lowed by a single from Steve Dunn and a pair by John Mackey. Tim Ashbridge, Bill Foote and Ken Smart Jr. all had a pair ofhelpers with a sin- gle assist going to Brian "Red" Stevenson. George Gladish added the other Gambler counter from Dave Bourgeois early in the final frame but that was it as the Crandell's crew is still looking for their first playoff points. With just three games left until the champion- ship games on Saturday, April 8, the standings are still close and all teams have to keep on to of their games to get the best records for champi- onship game seedings.
