20- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 14, 1995 " Correspondent tired of the budget Well, from this corner there is very little news. Looking at our Febru- ary newsletter from Cart- wright High School, stu- dents in the English 4A1 group will be participat- ing in the Durham Writ- ing Review for three weeks after the March break. Durham Board of Edu- cation is holding their last open meeting on their budget March 23 at 7 p.m. at the Educational Cen- tre, 400 Taunton Road, East, Whitby. I guess you're like me, 1 am tired of hearing about the federal budget, but really, have they sorted out the main causes of controversy and high costs? The way I see it: a) the federal government controls foreign trade and commerce and also immi- gration. Philosophically speaking, if] owned a ma- chine shop and employed 20 people and our major project was making equip- ment for one of the South A=nerican countries and a border dispute erupted and our government sided against the country we were dealing with, an ex- port embargo would no doubt follow. I would have no other recourse but to lay my 20 employees off. This would mean unem- ployment insurance fol- lowed by welfare for them. This week we have seen the fish war on in our At- lantic coast. Our fisher- men are home on unem- ployment insurance or welfare because we are taking steps to protect our fishing reserves. Foreigh fishing ships are raiding these reserves. In the McDonald report, itis written that the feder- al government is to as- sume the responsibility of assuripg each Canadian a standard of living. The way I see it the federal government should as- sume the responsibility of welfare. b) Education has become too big of a burden for the ordinary homeowner to carry along with the in- crease in regional govern- ment spending. After all, that individual homeown- er has to feed, clothe, house, insure and have some means of transpor- tation for his family. The provincial government should take over all finan- cial responsibilities of ed- ucation. c) Dealing with MP and MPP pensions, I can only say they should not collect a cent of pension money until they reach the old age limit. Why should they be different than the rest of us. However, I do believe they should re- ceive one set sum as a sev- erance package when leaving the government to help them readjust to the competitive world. This is one set sum, regardless of how long they have been elected or what position they held in the govern- ment. Two birthdays in our family this week, first my brother Don March 13 and my wife Eileen March 16. Congratulations in your old age, you two. Joke of the week: A small businessman re- ceived another question- naire from the govern- ment. The first question was: How many employ- ees do you have broken down by sex. None at all, wrote the owner, although a few people do come in late in the morning. Saying of the week: It's the constant and deter- mined effort that breaks down all resistance, sweeps away all obstacles. Happy St. Patrick's Day to you all!
