"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" Artist's crucifixes to be on PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 14, 1995 - 3 display soon at McLaughlin By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star The works of Dr. Ralph Price will be on display at the Robert McLaughlin Gallery later this month. Ralph Price: Cruicifixes Show will be opened on March 16 by lopg-time friend Dr. Michael Bird, a professor of religion at the University of Waterloo. The show will run until May 7. Dr. Price, whose show will in- clude close to 30 cruicifixes, came upon the idea to create the figures purely by accident. One day in 1990 he said he came across a root which looked like a corpse while he was rototilling his garden. He made a crucifix out of the root and rave reviews from those in the art world led him to keep creating more of the crucifixes. His work has graced the Latcham juried show in Stouff- ville, the gallery at Scugog Pub- lic Library and he opned the sea- son at the prestigious Mira Goddard Galleryin 1991. Encouragement from art dealers and the fact that his creations sold so well has Dr. Price always on the lookout for wood and roots shaped like hu- man forms. He has created cru- cifixes from all types of wood, in- cling beech, apple and driftwood. "It's a spiritual thing. They evoke emotion in you, or are supposed to," he said of the cru- cifixes. Dr. Price enjoys creating his work as they are a labor of love, not a chore. "I don't feel like I made them. They just happen," he said.
