No quorum, council takes the day off Scugog Township was forced to cancel its scheduled council meting yesterday (Monday) as it would not have had a quorum for the meeting. Any council meeting must have a majority of councillors present for any decisions to be made. With Ward 2 Councillor Marilyn Pearce on holidays in Florida and Ward 8 Councillor Ken Gadsden also vacationing, coupled with the vacant Regional Councillor seat, the township was forced to cancel the meeting. Council will hold a planning meeting next Monday, with council resuming on March 27. Welfare stats for February down 11% in the region By Kelly Lown ort Perry Star Welfare cases across Ontario increased by one per cent in the month of February, while Dur- ham saw a 1.9 per cent increase over last month. Although it is up close to two per cent from last month, the number of Durham residents relying on municipal assistance is down 11.5 per cent from Feb- ruary oflast year. General assistance caseloads increased by one per cent since last month, but are also down 11.6 per cent from the same time last year. The number of households re- ceiving social assistance for February was 672,191 in Onta- rio, which is approximately 21,000 fewer households on so- cial assitance than March of last year. Docs, MPPs in hockey fundraiser By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star The Legiskaters and the Mighty Docs will be facing off in what is promising to be an excit- ing hockey match. The charity hockey game will see all proceeds go towards spe- cial equipment campaigns at both Community Memorial Hospital in Port Perry and Cot- tage Hospital in Uxbridge. _ The Legiskaters, established in 1993, consists mostly of MPPs representing all three parties. They will be facing the Mighty Docs, whose stick- handling skills are rumored to be on the cutting edge. The Docs will be made up of players from three hospitals in- cluding Community Memorial Hospital representatives Dave Brown, CEO; Dr. Steve Russell; Jerry Taylor of the hospital board and employees Carl White and Steve Woodman. The game is the brainchild of Durham East MPP Gord Mills and Durham York MPP Larry O'Connor, who will be coaching the Legiskater team. Lance Brown, of CFTO News, will be the honorary captain of The Mighty Docs. The game will take place Wednesday, March 22 at Ux- bridge Arena, beginning at 8p.m. Tickets are $6 in advance or at the door.
