8- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 14, 1995 " Scug 0g's Community Newspaper of Choice" I ETTERS Prejudice remains the problem Rae government still on a spending spree From page 6 gay community is slowly recov- ering, by practising safe sex and celibacy, the straight communi- ty will be in trouble, because they don't want to know how to preventit. This brings me to a basic un- truth which I am tired of hear- ing and I am still surprised to hear. Ms. Switzer says that be- ing gay is not a neutral quality, as is I suppose, one's skin color or séx. This is not true. When will people see and understand that being homosexual is not something new. Since humans have walked this earth and in many animal species, sexual and affectionate activity be- tween members of the same sex is common. There is nothing wrong with it. What is wrong, in our society, is the belief that all sexuality is dirty and bad and we teach our children this. We teach that everything about our bodies is to be hidden, from flatulence to halitosis to masturbation. This is wrong. Parents today, are largely not taking their respon- sibility riously, and "family values" are valueless in this so- ciety, because these same par- ents are tying the hands of schools so that our children are not being shepherded through what can be a tough life, they are being pushed through and forgotten. Until, of course, they get pregnant, or 'commit a crime orget AIDS. How Ilong to come home after writing a letter like this and not worry that someone has vandal- Forder-Parks Insurance Brokers Inc. In regan. in 1992, Bill 9 promised to prevent gays and lesbians from getting e employment, hous- ing and a host o other basic needs. Their homes and offices were vandalized, their animals were hurt and killed, their trees were cut down, and they, them- selves were beaten and shot at. They, in return, did nothing vio- lent. They continued a peaceful campaign, until the bill was de- " feated, but just barely. And it will be back. 'Why? Because of people like Carol Switzer. People who pro- fess no prejudice when it's right in front of them. People who say "I have had lots of gay friends die of AIDS." Ms. Switzer is doing them a great disservice. And her gall is unbelievable. Would they call her "friend" after reading her letter? I'm not so sure. I am a Christian. I was raised in a strong, close Mennonite home, where peace and love and forgiveness were supreme. My father was a pacifist, who served time in a penitentiary in this country, during WWII for refusing to bear arms. I was taught ® that all people were equal in the eyes of God. I firmly believe that we can be gay and Christian - or Muslim or Jewish for that matter. We can also be straight and Chris- tian. Let's not hinder under- standing. Sincerely, Rebecca Voth, Scugog Township To the Editor: Despite two downgrades in its credit rating, the Rae gov- ernment is on a wild arena spree. Dominion Bond Rating Service is placing Ontario un- der review and predicts that the sales tax may have to be in- creased to a whopping 10 per cent. The NDP has spent $12 mil- lion on polls alone. Ontario's new social housing project is un- der fire. They plan to spend a bloated $7.1 billion - much high- er than could be obtained ee the private sector. Worse, it costs you and me a whopping $1 billion a year or more than $1,000 a month to subsidize each one of the units. This, de- spite a vacancy rate as high as two per cent in Toronto and as high as 10 per cent in recession- ravaged towns and cities throughout the province. The jobsOntario scam is bil- lions more than the $1.1 billion for job retraining. It's created a lot of fat cat jobs for NDP work- ers. A report in the fall of 1994 said our MPPs cost us $115 mil- lion last year. Why do we need 130 MPPs? The province is Can- _ada's worst borrower, says Do- z+ minion Bond Rating Service. Close to $1 billion a month. On- tario's debt is more than $150 billion. That's an unbelievable $54,830 owed by each family of four. Figures released in 1993 showed MPPs billed the govern- ment $805,000. for travel be- tween their ridings and Queen's Park, and another $464,000 for travel in their constituencies. MPPs are paid about $566,000 a year, in- cluding a tax free allowance of about $16,000 a year. The latest fiasco is the ada- mant stand taken by Rae on the proposed $2 billion subway ex- tension. Metro council turned it down as too expensive, and un- warranted. The latest farce was the inau- al of the new Toronto Police hief. There was no traditional - pipe band, not one word of grati- tude to the retiring Chief McCormack, Instead, there was a hodgepodge of Chinese drag- ons hended by the "dragon lady" herself, Sn Eng, Bob Rae's political ap appointment to the ard. Unlike other investi- tures, Eng aid the swearing in herself - a position usually filled by a judge. The new chief seems yin the NDP camp. The date of the election? May- or Howard Hall, who has to dou] : with the mandarins, says it's May 24. Clip and remember on election day some of the above abuses of the Rae NDP govern- ment. If your son is white and male and can't get a job, it's your chance to show your disgust for NDP so-called equitylaws. ~ Remember too that it was Bob Rae who wanted to make Ontario officially bilingual, and recently spent $4 million on French signs on the 401. Bill 8, ~ the French Services Act in On- tario was passed with 72 MPPs missing and no translation from French to English in the legislature. More that 95 per cent of On- tarians are not French speak- ing. The cost for French Immer- sion and Bill 8 in Ontario runs in the billions. Ten per cent of the Durham Board (public) alone not including the Roman Catholic Board is costing us about $35 million a year, not in- cluding core French. And it looks like another six per cent increase this year. Rule by decree is not democ- racy. Information is the curren- cy of democracy. Dean J.
