NH Bi dibs Bb ns it A _ "A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 28, 1995 - 21 / SPORTS XL Gas Bar Eaglettes claim second The XL. Gas Bar Eaglettes, Novice C Ringette team, had a very successful year in league play culminating in the champi- onship game played this past Sunday in Port Perry. Rebound- ing from their loss to Port Perry during the last game of regular season play, Manvers found the Initiative in this game and scored first with the Eaglettes tying it up shortly after. Man- vers then regeined their lead only to have Port Perry tie it up again. For the third time, Man- vers took the lead, this time to hold it for the rest of the game. Losing 4-3 at the end of the first period, the Eaglettes were not able to regroup as they had throughout the year, and were kept off the scoreboard while Manvers went on to win 7-3. Port Perry's play in this game was not indicative of the effort and determination shown in previous games as the team was unable to get their attack orga- nized. Highlights for the Ea- glettes were the great goaltend- ing effort by Heather Imrie and the goals scored by Jackie Pash- ley, Sarah Aldridge and Chris- tine Cotie. Assists were made by Sarah, Holly Allison and Ni- cole Ansell. Although not up to the level of play that the team is capable of, a good effort was given by Cei- lidh Baxter, Amanda Curry, Jessica Doe, Shannon Urqu- hart, Jill Hunter, Brooke Simp- son, Hailey Wilson, Whitney Reid, Shannon Hatfield and Jenna Davison. Congratulations on a very good season and good luck in the Regionals! Novice win consolation The Pearce Auction Major Novice team played their home tournament on Saturday, March 25. After losing their first two games, they went on to win the consolation championship. Their first game of the day was played against the Agincourt Lions who won 2-1. Port Perry's lone goal was scored by Pat Lewis with Justin Shinn assisting. The second game against Cobourg, was a faster paced game. Despite several shots on net by the Auctioneers, Cobourg came out ahead 5-3. Scoring for Port Perry were Pat Lewis, Kevin Robins and Ryan Hnatko with Justin Shinn and Kevin Robins picking up assists. The Pearce, Auction team again met the Agincourt Lions in the consolation championship. This was an exciting game with end to end action. Gordon Smith, Justin Koury, Joey Lane and Jordan Froats played a strong defensive game for Port Perry and there was no score until halfway through the second peri- od. Chet Martin scored the first goal of the game on a pass from Justin Shinn. In less than three minutes there were three more goals scored; two by Agincourt and one by Port Perry. Kevin Robins scored the Port Perry goal with assists going to Chet Martin and Justin Shinn. Teddy Howarth, Tyler Weisflock and Alex Nicolaou played a strong backchecking game and also had a couple of good shots no net. Agincourt scored early in the third period to take a 3-2 lead. Pat Lewis, Ryan Hnatko and Lucas Fraser played a good game with Pat scoring Port Perry's third goal to again tie the game. Gordon Smith got the assist. The game went into overtime and was still tied after the first five minutes. The second five minutes of overtime saw a player being removed every minute until it was one on one for the final minute. Gordon Smith was the Auctioneer's choice for one on one and he did an outstandingjob of controlling the puck. However, the Agincourt goaltender was also outstanding and all three of Gordon's shots were saved. The next overtime period was back to three on three. Kevin Robins got control of the puck and took a shot on net. The goal- tender saved it but Joey Lane was there to pick up the rebound andslamitin. The Auctioneers picked up another trophy for their collec- tion. Gordon Smith was Port Perry's game MVP. The Auction- eers saw some great goaltending in the three game tournament by Kurtis Wagar and Scott Honey. Good luck in your final tournament in Cobourg next week- end. Tweens vie for championship When the going gets tough, the tough get going and that is just what happened last Sun- day as the Pineridge Tween B ringette team gained a 5-4 victo- ry over Pickering. This was the semi-final game in the league championships and even though Pickering had handily defeated us in the last two games with them, the Pineridge girls pulled together and played the best game of the season when it really counted. The first goal of the game went to Mary Justynski on a pass from Diana Burnett. This made Pickering sit up and take notice and they were able to re- ply within minutes to tie the game. It wasn't long though be- fore Diana picked up a flying pass to move in to score our sec- ond. Before the period ended, Amy Wilsgn very quietly slid a nice one in' the net on an assist by Jen Harfimond. Period two saw the Pineridge girls pick up their fourth goal of the game on an ideal play, a straight pass from Jen Donnel- ly to Leanne Davison to Amelie Levielle who found the net with no problem. Pickering came back shortly after for one mark- er and then with 1:14 left in the game picked up a tying goal. The game was tense now - who would be able to break this tie to move on to the finals. Well, not to be beaten , the Pineridge girls did it with only 20 seconds left in the game. Jen Imrie and Me- lissa Hooker moved the ring up the ice to Leanne Holt who scored the winning goal. It was a great game all the way and the girls played their best. The defensive teams of Jen Imrie and Jen Donnelly, and Cathy Cooper and Melissa Hooker, protected us well, while forwards Diana Burnett, Kim Carrique, Leanne Davison, Jen Hammond, Leanne Holt, Mary Justynski, Lisa LeFort, Amelie Levielle and Amy Wilson moved the ring from end to end in hot pursuit. Our netminder, Laur- en Christie, did a tremendous Job for the Pineridge team. We now face Whitby for the league championship on Tuesday - go get 'em, girls. The Pineridge girls have seen a lot of ringette action in the past month. We travelled to Ajax early in March for their an- nual tournament and came away with silver medals. The next weekend saw us travel to Barrie where luck was not on our side, but the girls played four exciting games. We also had two close games against Pickering later in the month and even though we were de- feated, we still kept on trying. Stay tuned for the results of the league championship and the regionals which take place next weekend. | ~ ® draw for a John ewby (approx. retail valu 37th Annual Skate-Fest Friday, April 7th, 1995 7:30 p.m. & Scugog Memorial Arena Open invitation to the community to come and see our children's figure skating accomplishments this year. ® special guest appearances ® P Ri P limited edition pri framed $250.00) # fun for the whole family adults: $5.00 seniors and students: $3.00 children under. 12: $1.00 tickets available at the door
