Puckrin struck again early in the second when Baxter passed it up to him and he shot it from centre and it went through the goalie's legs. Riverside changed tlL.eir goal- ie and began to put up a bit of of - fence as they got one back. The Techstars started taking penal- ties and the penalty killing and + goalie Doug Short put up some beautiful defense. Late in the second Dave Kam- minga made it 5-2 when he put Ian Parliament's pass in the top corner. In the third the team played some more great defense as they barely let Riverside in their end. The final score was 5-2 and it was back to the hotel for the night. ut they were back at the are- na bright and early Sunday morning to play game two. Once again the Techstars an early goal on a scramble 1n front of the net, Gainey and Puckrin assisted on the goal. Baxter scored This upcoming Sunday will see the final se- ries of the season played between the Swam- pers and the Brooklin Bruins after both ad- vanced through the semi-finals. It took the Swampers three games to get past the Blackstock Brewers and the final game was a squeaker as they came out on top of a 1-0 score. The goal came at the midway point of the opening frame with Dale Lown finishing off a three way passing play as Mike Mole and Mike Butt were awarded the assists. Keith Tremblay picked up the shutout between the pipes, his second of the series after game two had ended up a 5-0 Swamp win. Blackstock had won the opener of the series with a shutout of their own with a 2-0 tally. Meanwhile, Brooklin took Trader Sam's in two games straight in the semi-final series. Game one was played two weeks ago and it was a close affair with the Bruins ending up on top of a 2-1 count. Game two went this past Sunday and it was nowhere close as Brooklin took it 6-1. Half their goals came in the first period with Ron Attwood notching a pair and the single going to Shawn Mitchell. Drawing the assists were Kevin Ib- bittson with a single and two going to Nick Att- wood. ; In the second half Perry Mason scored a pair with Mitchell getting his second of the game. Ibbittson added another assist with Roger Rousselle gaining two as well as singles to Ken Lynde and Mitchell. Breaking the Brooklin shutout was Jim Gregg with help from Jason Lee and Brad Maarse with three minutes showing on the clock. Back in the early part of the month Brooklin had won the Intermediate section of the Re- gional playdowns and earned the right to travel to the Provincials which were played in Arnpri- Swamp, Blackstock in final or on the weekend of March 17-19. Once there the squad played some decent broomball and blessed with good goaltending they came through winning four straight to take the gold medals. In their advancement they defeated the East- ern Region host team 2-1 with goals by Greg Le- pine and Nick Attwood assisted by Kevin Ibbitt- son with a pair and singles to Attwood and Jim Mason. In game two they downed another Eastern team this time 4-2. Accounting for the goals this time were Nick Attwood with a pair, brother Ron with a single and the last one to Luc Col- lard. The assists were picked up by Murray Down with two, followed by Ron Attwood, Ibbitt- son, and Wayne Tate. The Southwest Region team out of Nanticoke were the next nemesis and the Bruins pulled off a4-1 win. Roger Rousselle scored the first of them to be followed by Nick Attwood's natural hat trick. Rob Mason, Tom Wotten, and Murray Down drew the assists, with Murray getting two. The final was against the Central West team and it was as finals should be, a real close one with the final score being 2-0. Shawn Mitchell and Wayne Tate did the damage with mason drawing two assists and Rousselle a single. At the awards ceremony MVP awards and first and second all-star teams were chosen. Goaltender Jim Raaphorst gained the MVP award as well as selection to the first all-star team based upon his efforts between the pipes. Also chosen for the first team were Nick Att- wood on offence and Murray Down for defence. On forward for the second team was Ron Att- wood. Congratulations gentlemen on an excellent weekend of broomball. TT Compton Cable finish up As spring arrived, so did Compton Cable minor novice in Little Britain to face the Mari- osa Novice "A" team. Port erry got off to a quick start with a Tyson Savage wrapa- roynd goal early in the game. Mariposa came right back with strong skaters and banked a shot off our defenceman's head to tieit up. Mariposa scored twice more but it was Compton Cable's turn to reply. Keenan Geer let go a whistling wrist shot. The goalie met the challenge but Ty- son Savage jumped on a fat re- bound and banged it home. Soon after he was found work- ing hardin the corner and ward- ing off checkers. Tyson centred it out to Danny Halward who made no mistake, tying it up at 3-3. Unfortunately our players didn't know you couldn't cover up the puck in the crease if you weren't the goalie. This result- ed in a penalty shot, our first against. Mariposa's little dyna- 'mo went down the ice and banked it off the goalie's pad to go ahead. Compton Cable tried desperately to tie it up but went home a little wiser. Saturday morning, March 25, was the Novice Tournament in Port Perry. Markham Thunder was our first opponent. Jeff Tomcheski had a little sister born Friday morning and played his heart out for Alison. The Thunder lived up to their name getting off to a two-goal lead. Shane Jeffrey and Nelson Langmaid played well carrying the puck out of their own end and getting offensive chances with their strong shots. Comp- ton Cable got on the board with Tyson Savage pounding it home with assists to Danny Halward and Todd Lance. Late in the third period, season Markham picked up a loose puck for an insurance goal. With 12.8 seconds left in the game, Ashley Lucas popped one in with assists to Kyle Mullins and Derek Goreski but the clock ran out of time for a comeback this game. After PPMH supplied a nice pizza for lunch, Compton Cable met Innisfil. This team had seemed to perfect the technique of bouncing the puck off the goalie's rear from "behind" the net this game. This is how they "ended" up with a three-goal lead going into the third period. Shane Jeffrey picked up a Kyle Mullins' rebound for a score, with Michael Lycett getting the other assist. Innisfil staved off our final charge, winning, and going to the finals. Compton Cable prepared for the consolation finals against the Oshawa Oilers. The Oilers got off to a two-goal lead in the first period before Michael Ly- cett scored on his own rebound. Kory Bauer's hard work and Todd Lance's persistence earned them both assists. The Oilers potted two more goals de- spite fine performances from Mark Carnaghan and Leo Tail- lon. The smooth skating Mat- thew Roth played with determi- nation today. The team thanks Ron Comp- ton, the team sponsor. He pre- sented Taylor Churchill with the trophy for game MVP. The players would also like to thank PPMH executive and the Modacks for the support and the use of the big team's room. What a thrill for the eight-year- olds. Many thanks to Doug Danter, John Churchill, Jim Geer and Al Goreski for their direction and patience over this season. Our thanks to the kids for their great efforts, giving us plenty to write about.
