Just one more week of games remain in the SHL for teams to determine their final seed- ings to compete in the championship games on Saturday, April 8. With the majority of teams in a point dead- lock, a win, tie, loss or even a surprising upset or two should make for a great slate of games next Sunday, as the league completes the round robin part of the playoffs! Hawks vs Comets Game 1 this week saw the J&D Hawks jump into the thick of things with a 6-2 victory over the Compton Comets. The Comets were full marks for effort in this one with many players missing from the lineup and even led the match early into the second period. However, the Hawks couldn't be contained forever and soared to score five unanswered goals to gain the important two points. Peter Lane led the Hawk attack with a goal and three assists. Rick Hope scored a pair and singles went to Doug Suppelsa, Joe Curran and Carl Durward. Assists saw captain Callery notch two with singles to Durward, Curran, Dennis, Lycett, Ed Olsen, Ritchie Lefort and Keijo Kinnunen in this big win. Comet replies came from Mike McQuade and Paul Goreski. Tom Barnes assisted on both goals with a single helper credited to Ken Davi- son. Phantoms vs Devils Game 2 proved tobe a one sided affair as the Pineridge Phantoms humbled the Pizza De- light Devils 5-0! The Phantoms also had a short bench but came to play and left the Devils in a state of disbelief! Brian Samis provided the scoring punch as he scored the hat trick and added a single assist for the four point outing. Bill Van Camp and Clarence Stephenson on a breakaway added the other markers in this Phantom romp! Steve Fox had his four points via four assists while Ray Zaparanuik had two and singles went to Stephenson and Jim Fowler. Shawn Parker had a relatively easy time posting his shutout as the Devils had few chances to score in the game! Clippers vs Blazers Game 3 was a real "barn burner" as the Fitz- gerald Clippers and Harrison Blazers played to a 2-2 draw giving both teams a valuable single point! The Blazers took a two goal lead on tal- lies by Dave Milton from Dale Bronson and Richard Sakanashi and then Sakanashi from Milton. The Clippers got one back late in the first on an unassisted effort by Doug Bronson. The Clippers tied the game late in the second as Larry Pilkey converted from Derek Fitzgerald. SHL playoffs continue That was it for the scoring as both teams tight- ened up to play a scoreless final frame. The talk around the rink has the Blazers eagerly await- ing the return of Jim Beatty next Sunday! Sharks vs Gamblers Game 4 had the Van World Sharks come to life with some sharp passing and perfect setups to down the Crandell's Gamblers 5-1. The Sharks have the famous "Shark Attack" that was in top gear in this match as they poured in time and time again on the Gambler defense. The Gamblers were lacking reserves and found it hard to handle the spirited Sharks dur- ing the final two periods. Gary Lance and Phil Cochrane led the way with a goal and two assists a piece. Mike "Tate" Adam, Randy Prosser and Jay Adam added the finishing touches with single counters. Wayne "toothy" Fox had a pair of assists with a single credited to Terry Bache. The lone Gambler reply came from Dave Bourgeois on a nice passing play from Ken Jef- frey and Steve Groves. Chargers vs Aces Game 5 saw the Monsma Chargers move into a tie with the Clippers atop the playoff stand- ings as they downed the Taylor Aces 6-2! The Monsma team has a powerful offense and seized the Aces short-staffed outing to take their share of first place. Duane Bronson and Bill Bridge took charge with a pair of goals each. Jason War- ner and Paul Van Camp added the singles. War- ner and Brad Hurst grabbed two assists each while single helpers went to Bridge, Van Camp, Bob Lee and team sponsor Big Jack Monsma. Ace replies saw Todd Wilbur net one from Mike Kane, and'Rick Campbell score from Dave Brownson. The stage is now set for the "strong to prevail" next week in five great matchups. Don't forget that the Annual Changing of the Clocks must be completed to catch all the action at the correct time! A number of players have yet to submit registrations for next season and are reminded of the new rule change that all registrations must be submitted by April 8 to reserve your spotin the league for the 95-96 season! Enjoy the last few days of March and get ready for great playoff games to start April next Sunday at the following times: 6:45 a.m. - Crandell's Gamblers vs Monsma Chargers 7:45 a.m. - Fitzgerald Clippers vs Compton Comets 8:45 a.m. Hawks 9:45 a.m. - Harrison Blazers vs Taylor Aces 10:45 a.m. - Pineridge Phantoms vs Van World Sharks. - Pizza Delight Devils vs J&D The season came to a close for the Port Perry Panthers Midget 1 team on Saturday, March 11, at the Scugog Arena. Through- out this hard fought best of five series, the Panthers battled dil- igently, losing each game by only one goal! Their first game on March 6, in the Port Perry Arena, dis- played two very fine teams each vying for a chance to advance to the next round of playoffs. At the end of this matchup, the fi- nal score was 7-6 for the team from East Gwillimbury. Port Perry had fought back through- out the entire game to answer to each of the opponent's goals but unfortunately, despite their hard efforts, the last goal was awarded to East Gwillimbury to give them the first win of the se- ries. Next, the Panthers were off to East Gwillimbury, to play on a much smaller and shorter ice surface. The guys seemed a lit- tle lost at first, while their ri- vals seemed right at home and came out very strong indeed. Adding insult to injury, the re- fereeing left little to be desired from the Panther's standpoint and consequently; it-was to be yet another intense encounter. The boys did not let this stand in their way and battled back to tie the game at 5-5, sending this exciting game into overtime. During the next 10 minutes of play and being shorthanded as well, the Panthers displayed some gritty hockey and kept East Gwillimbury from gaining any ground until finally, late in the period, their opponents got lucky on a scramble in front of the net, and managed to sneak one past the goalie to win 6-5. Coming back to Port Perry on March 11, it was certainly a dif- Panther update ferent team from the previous Wednesday. Each member of the team came to play and most definitely secure a win in front of the hometown crowd. They gave it their all and played one of their best games against East Gwillimbury. This game could have gone either way but once 'again the hands of fate stepped in and gave the advantage to the visiting team as they came away with not only a 2-1 win, but the opportunity to advance to the all-Ontario finals. We are sorry not to have the game sheets to provide you with all the goal scorers and as- sists, but everyone, from the outstanding goaltending team of John Babcock and Scott Pre- chitko, to the excellent defen- sive efforts of Jeremy Geer, Jeff Clarke, Jeff Jamieson, Chris Drury and Ian McCready, as well as the aggressive offensive lines of Ian Shrigley, Craig Laird, Matt Hobbs, Jay King, Kenton LeFort, Daryl Bour- geois, Greg Thompson, Kevin Hobbs and Tommy Chambers, played an all-important role in bringing the team as far as they did. Good effort, guys. In closing, the Panthers would like to extend their sin- cere thanks to Warren Geer, Garry Geer and Ryan Parlia- ment for all their time and ef- fort with them this season. Also, they would like to say thank you to Shawn and Kim Parker of ~ Lakeside Golf and Hockey Cen- tre in Port Perry for their spon- sorship and support of the team and, last but not least, to the parents and fans who came out faithfully to watch and cheer on the Panthers. We wish every- one a safe and happy summer and good luck next season wherever you play. See.you at the rink in September!
