pr 24- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, April 4, 1995 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" SPORTS SHL championship series set to start this weekend The start of April saw the round robin conclude on Sunday. The championship seedings are now com- plete and will feature some great games next Satur- day, for the 1995 trophy games and individual MVP Awards! If all teams show up with full rosters, any- one's prediction could turn out correct as the round robin playoff structure has yielded "Super Seedings" for hockey fans to enjoy as the hockey season comes to an end at Scugog Arena! Chargers vs Gamblers Game 1 on Sunday saw the Monsma Chargers earn a spot in the "A" final with an 8-2 victory over the Crandell's Gamblers. It was all Chargers as their powerful offense piled up all eight goals in a row, before the Gamblers notched two in the final minutes of the third period. Bill Bridge led the Chargers with a goal and four assists for the big game. Tony Oxley was right be- hind with a pair of counters and two assists as well. Big Jack Monsma, the team sponsor, notched an- other two to his career total and single goals came from Lee Wilbur, Dave Thompson and Jason War- ner. Wilbur, John Robertson, Brad Hurst and Bob Lee rounded out the attack with two assists each. The Gamblers had Henry Forderer in on both re- plies with a goal and an assist. Dave Bourgeois had the other goal while Mark Decosta and Ken Jeffrey 'picked up single helpers. Comets vs Clippers Game 2 had the Compton Comets put an early scare into playoff leaders, the Fitzgerald Clippers, but with a few players missing, the Comets just couldn't control a determined Clipper crew for a full three periods. The final score of 6-4 Clippers gave the Fitzgerald sponsorship their fourth "A" final ap- pearance in a row and a great matchup with the Monsma Chargers next Saturday! Doug Bronson led the Clipper attack with a pair of goals and a pair of assists for the "four point" game. Derek Fitzgerald scored two timely goals while Bill "Roc" Owen and Larry Pilkey added singles. Carl Fitzgerald completed the fine playoff round for his team sponsorship with a single helper. For the Comets, Dave Dickson had a strong outing with two goals and an assist. Ken Davison and Mike McQuade had single tallies each. Bill Weisflock add- 'ed two assists while a single went to Wiily Edwards. Hawks vs Devils Game 3 saw an eager J&D Hawk team take it to the Pizza Delight Devils as they won a berth in the "B" final with a 4-1 victory. Right from the drop of the puck, the Hawks were "flying!" Both teams need- ed the win to go to the "B" and the Hawks were wor- thy victors! Ritchie LeFort always comes up big in the playoffs and he led the Hawks with two goals and an assist. Sponsor, Joe Curran, added one of each while "Smurf teammage" Keijo Kinnunen added a single. Peter Lane, captain Callery and Doug Suppelsa com- pleted the Hawk attack with an assist a piece. For the Devils who now have had two disappoint- ing outings in a row, it was Mike Driscoll scoring the lone reply from Ken Smart Sr. and "Red" Stevenson. Blazers vs Aces Game 4 was an interesting tilt as the Harrison Blazers took to the ice needing the win to go to the "B" and the Taylor Aces came out needing a victory to avoid the "Bowl!" Many say it was the return of Jim Beatty, back from the sunny south, that provid- ed his sagging team with the needed inspiration! Whatever the case, it was indeed the Blazers with the 5-3 victory sending the Aces to meet the Gam- blers in the year end "Flushing Contest" next Satur- day! Mind you the Blazers had to score two in the last two minutes of play to win this thriller showing the strong effort of the Aces to "avoid" their final seeding! Scoring champ, John Harman, led the Blazers with a goal and three assists. Steve Churchill, David Roth, Richard Sakanashi and Dave Milton all potted singles and Jim Park had a single helper to qualify for the "B!" | Mark Pehleman, Ken Little and sponsor Wayne Taylor had single replies for the Aces. Bob Beacock and Dave Brownson had two assists a piece, while Taylor and Mike Kane had single helpers. Sharks vs Phantoms The final game of the day had its own excitement as the Van World Sharks, already assured of their spot in the "D" took to the ice to play "spoiler" to the Pineridge Phantoms who needed the victory to ad- vance to the "B" final! The Sharks have endured some comments this season, after winning the "A" fi- nal last year, and decided to silence the critics once and for all as they handed the Phantoms a 5-2 defeat to send the Phantoms to the "C" and allow the Blaz- ers to "slip" into the "B!" Holy minnow or excuse me, "Tiger Shark," as the Van World Gang proved their point and completed yet another SHL fan special in the last game of the round robin playoffs! What a schedule! Jay Adam led the Sharks with two goals while Phil Cochrane, Steve Conners and Terry Bache had singles. Wayne Fox and Gary Lance both had two as- sists while single helpers were credited to Conners, Randy Prosser, Ivan Geer, Scott Davis and Greg Fitzgerald. For the Phantoms it was Fred Moffatt from Clar- ence Stephenson and Steve Fox, and later, Bill Van Camp from Brian Samis with the only replies Well once again it came down to the final game, game 150 in the season, to decide the championship game appearances! Could it be any better? I think not! The Port Perry boys won their first two games, but their loss to Cobourg in the third game eliminated them from the finals. The first win, 2-0 over Peterborough Ste. Anne's was due largely to the great goaltending by Scott Honey and Kurtis Wagar. A highlight of the game was a great save by Scott when a Peterborough player slipped by the de- fence and came at him one on one. Pat Lewis and Alex Nicolaou also played a strong game for the Auc- tioneers. Justin Koury had a good defensive game. Port Perry's goals were scored by Kevin Rob- ins, assisted by Justin Shinn and Chet Martin; and by Justin Shinn, as- sisted by Kevin Robins. Chet Martin received game MVP. The second game was a 3-1 win against the Agin- court Canadians. Tyler Weisflock and Teddy Howarth played well in this game with a couple of good scoring opportuni- ties. Gordon Smith had a solid game on defence, and with Justin Koury, Jordan Froats, and Joey Lane, did a good job of backing up Scott Honey and Kurtis Wagar in goal. Kevin Robins scored Port Perry's first goal assisted by Joey Lane. Pat Lewis, Ryan Hnatko and Lucas Fraser were strong in this game with Pat scoring the second goal, assisted by Ryan. Port Perry's third Novice action goal was scored by Justin Shinn on a beautiful pass by Kevin Robins. Gordon Smith also earned an as- sist. Kevin Robins earned game MVP. The third game against Cobourg was one of the best games the Auction- eers have played in a long while. Unfortunately, the game ended in a 3-2 loss for Port Perry. Tyler Weis- flock, Teddy Howarth and Alex Nicolaou played a good back-checking game. Pat Lewis, Lucas Fraser and Ryan Hnatko played well with some good shots on net. Kevin Robins, Jus- tin Shinn and Chet Mar- tin were effective at penal- ty-killing and at keeping the pressure on the Co- bourg team. Both of Port Perry's goals were scored by Kevin Robins, with Justin Shinn and Chet Martin earning the as- sists. The defensemen, Gordon Smith, Justin Koury, Joey Lane and Jor- dan Froats were especial- ly strong in this third game. Kurtis Wagar and Scott Honey both made some key saves. Justin Shinn received game MVP. This well-played tour- nament was a good end to a great season. The team would like to thank their sponsor John Pearce of Pearce Auctions and their manager Brian Evans. They would especially like to thank their coaches, Bob Spencely, Ken Parry and Murray Empringham for all their time and pa- tience. With their guid- ance, the boys have come a long way from September to March.
