Administrator Clerk The Port Perry Minor Softball Association, in their endeavors to promote the game of softball and en- hance the skills of the local levels is putting together a program for the house league registrants. With the aid of several of the rep team coaches, rep team con- venor Wayne Venning will be running several skills development clinics within the area. These will be- gin with one in Greenbank on Saturday, April 22 at 10 a.m. at the local ball diamond there. From there Wayne and his entourage will be head- ing to the lakefront diamonds in Port Perry on Sat- urday, May 6 for the program to start at 9 a.m. The following day, Sunday, May 7 will find them in the village of Seagrave where they will start at 10 a.m.. There will be various demonstrations and assistance with regards to throwing, catching, hitting, and fieldings. All registrants from the 7-8 mites, 9-10 mites, and youth boys and girls programs are required to come out and participate in the day's events. Any of last year's house league coaches, or those wishing to help out this year are asked to come out to view the pro- gram which could be beneficial to them as well for future practices and development. Also something new being offered on the date of May 6 at the lakefront diamonds will be an equip- ment swap for those who have grown out of shoes, gloves, etc. Parents are asked to browse the closets and see if there is anything of good quality value that others may have a need for. Further details re- garding this item can be secured by contacting Alynne Jones at 985-9860. Rep Team Evaluations For this season we will have a relatively full slate of rep teams with the mites, squirts, peewees, and bantams playing in the York Durham league while the midgets and juniors will be entertaining folks in the Oshawa City and District loop. With the demise of the lakeshore league our ban- tam girls squad has moved into the North York league where they will face teams from the area such as Peterborough, Cobourg, and Sunderland. To date we do not as yet have a coach for the rep Taylor Ford mite team. From there we go to Gord Jones who will be coaching the Legion squirts while Dave Dalton with the assistance of Dennis Ashton and Pat Versage will be in charge of the MoJacks peewees. Ron Short will be returning with the Mer- chant bantams, and at press time it looks like Dave Kay will be assisting the Merchant midgets while Ron Redman, Bob Vander Slagt, and Craig Venning will head up the Merchant juniors. Jacques Lacha- pelle will have a full staff with Joan Dalton, Dot Hooker and Barb Lachapelle helping him to manage the Stars bantam girls team. Evaluations will be getting underway for some of the teams this week with the Bantam girls at the arena diamonds on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thurs- day, April 11-13 starting at 6:30 p.m. The bantam boys dig in on Wednesday, April 12 on the south lakefront diamond at 6:30 p.m. to be followed on Sat- urday, April 15 at noon at the same park. The jun- iors will also get started on the same Saturday at 2 : p.m. on the south lakefront park. . The week of April 17 will see the remaining. | squads start up with the mites on Monday at 6:30 | p.m. on the north diamond while the midgets will go at the same time on the south. Both teams will re- peat this schedule on the Wednesday night. On Tuesday, April 18 the squirts will be on the north park at 6:30 p.m. while the juniors are on the south with the peewees going to the arena diamonds. The squirts and peewees will then go again on | Thursday with the peewees moving to the north lakefront park. & OASA Convention Update As previously described in this paper the local As-' sociation with the help of the Oshawa City and Dis- trict league hosted the 73rd annual OASA AGM at the Oshawa Holiday Inn. The Friday night social hosted by Port Perry was well attended with Carolyn and Todd Wilbur as well as Ken Reinhardt supply- ing the entertainment. There were over 180 voting delegates in attendance at Saturday's meeting with 200 plus for the awards night and banquet. A large number of people from the immediate area were in attendance with most winning one of the 160+ donated items. Also at the banquet Dave Kay was presented with a certificate by the OASA for special achievement re- garding his efforts over the past few years at the lo- cal level as well as the fine job he and his fellow com- mittee members did on the weekend. - With the assistance of local executive member Dave McTaggart and the OASA's Kevin and Vin Walker it was a well run AGM with many compli- ments received on Sunday. As for the AGM itself most of the items on the agenda pertained to housekeeping but a number of others will have an effect on all softballers this sea- son. There will be additional classifications for a Master's division for those over 36 who still want to play the sport but not at the top level calibre, as well as provisions for an Industrial classification. Previously it had been established that all rep teams affiliated required at least one coach with a full NCCP level one accreditation. This past weekend saw this item revised so that at the mite level there are no such requirements at all while at the squirt age the coach needs the technical level one. All divisions above this require full certifi- cation. Registrations Of major concern to the executive at this time is the low number of registrations received to date. There have been a number of writeups and ads run in this paper regarding this item but the numbers just aren't there yet. Hopefully now that the weather is starting to look up this will spark some interest in getting everyone out to Pineridge Sports where the staff will assist in the paper work. For those ball players who have already regis- tered, maybe they can ask classmates and friends if they've done this yet.
