And reports filed by firefighters show two members of the ._ Caesarea squad entered the home to search for the woman, but 'were beaten back by flames and smoke. Dave Marcellus of the Fire Marshal's office told The Star last week that Sigrid Boehm, 70, had likely already suc- cumbed to intense smoke in her Regional Rd. 57 bungalow by the time firefighters arrived March 18.He was responding to claims by some Caesarea res- idents that Scugog firefighters from the local hall could have acted more quickly in fighting the blaze. : "I sympathize with all parties but at that point (the firefight- ers' arrival) she was beyond help," Mr. Marcellus said Friday. "By the time (the fire) was reported she was long gone. It was that far advanced." Turnto Page 10 'Council delivers on no-increase pledge By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star It was a struggle, but Scugog Township Council has come through with a zero per cent increase in its 1995 budget. "It's a good budget. We are still doing what the public wants by saving money in as many areas as we can," Mayor Howard Hall, budget commit- tee chair, said Monday morn- ing. Council was aiming for no increase in its 1995 budget and although Mayor Hall admitted it was tough, they managed to hold the line on taxes without sacrificing ser- vices to the community. The mayor also pointed out that the reserves will not suffer too much from this year's bud- get. There were some areas where numbers had to be slashed, but the mayor called Turnto Page 11 J.
