New innovations in farming change how farmers get the job done every day. The VanLea farm in Blackstock is no exception. They are operating their dairy farm in a new open stall barn that makes it that much easier. d Richard Van Camp and his son Lawrence keep more than 200 dairy cattle on their farm. They decided to have the barn built last year, and it was completed last December. In choosing the open stall concept they researched different dairy farms in the Northern US and parts of Canada and decided on one that would make their operation more efficient. What they have now is a barn that takes care of all the problems the old barn couldn't. It was poorly ventilated, dark and damp. The new free stall structure gives the cows more room and better ventilation, with natural sunlight and drier floors. Slated floors allow for manure to fall into two storage tanks built into a concrete bunker below the barn. They hold waste that can later be chemically treated and used for liquid manure: An efficient form of recycling. Mr. Van Camp wasn't about to discuss the exact cost of the barn, but he did hint: "About two combines and a tractor." Mr. Van Camp explained that the barn has been very practical, and has lived up to everything he's hoped for from it. "This was quite a project and we're getting the bugs worked out," he said. Those are small bugs though. The only worries they have now are working out the easiest way to walk the cows over to the milking machines and finding the perfect feed mix. The two men are also looking ahead. Cows, horses, poultry, swine, sheep, and rabbits are some of the livestock or- ientated clubs available to 4-H members. A goat club is also being planned for the Durham West 4-H As- sociation area. The Dur- ham East 4-H Field Crops club is developing their own project around Con- servation and Good Envi- ronmental Management Practices on the Farm. Is farming with your pencil of interest? A -manage- ment club is also being of- fered in Durham East. Durham West 4-H Associ- ation hopes to offer clubs in horticulture, indoors and outdoors in the com- ing months.
