24. PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, April 25, 1995 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" . # EE ---------- -- ht aA a ------ --S& ORTS With the warmer weather fast approaching the association is gearing up to get the season start- ed. Over the past weekend there were a couple of events held with 14 of the local youth attending a junior development um- pire's clinic in Courtice, and nearly 40 players at- tended a skills develop- ment clinic in Greenbank. Both items were well- received by the partici- r.pants with the skills clinic drawing some very posi- tive comments from players, coaches and par- ents. Skills Development Clinic - Port Perry. In addition to the afore- mentioned clinic there will be one in Port Perry on the date of Saturday, May 6 at 9 a.m. It will be held down at the lakefront diamonds and is available for all par- ticipants registered for the 2 mite categories and youth ages as well. Its a benefit for all the players to attend as well as coach- es due to the fact that the 'presenters and facilita- tors, who are our rep team coaches, will be using the #echniques taught at the NCCP level 1. This means that everyone will receive the same type of teaching and instruction which can be used at any time, espe- Diane Richardson Mobile (905) 404-5254 10 Years Service Why would anyone drive to Uxbridge to visit these two? ih i ww - Minor softball update Registration on the go | cially when every team will have time for practic- es this year. It will also be a benefit to the betterment of all our ball players. Also there will be a table set up for the swapping of old, or too small shoes, gloves, etc. The following day, Sun- day, May 7 the clinic will be travelling to Seagrave where it will be put on starting at 10 a.m. For those unable to attend in Port Perry they can still make this one and just tell the registrars where they are from once they get there. Registrations For some strange rea- son we're still way down on registrations with the number to date still below the 300 level of players. There are still positions open at the t-ball level, which will start at the end of May, as well as the youth lob-ball league. The association is in the mid- dle of ordering shirts and "hats and it makes it very difficult for the executive when they don't know where they're at for total numbers. A final registra- tion will be allowed at the skills development with a late fee charged as well. And on the injury front, Karl Wendlinger from Formula One, Ernie Irvan from Winston Cup and Page ° Jones from the sprint cars all suffered serious, if not career ending, accidents. On the bright side: German Michael Schumacher captured the Formula One crown, in spite of the best efforts of the governing body. Dale Earnhardt earned his 7th Winston Cup title, in spite of the best efforts of Rusty, Mark, et al. and Al Unser Jr. claimed the IndyCar championship in spite of the best efforts from everyone else. It was the best of times for IndyCar's Team Penske as this team won 12 of the 16 races and it was the worst of times for the other teams as Team Penske won 12 of the 16 races. And it was almost the greatest of times for Canadian racers. Of the six drivers to score victories in the IndyCar series, half of them were Canucks. Scott Goodyear claimed one win at Michigan Speedway, Jacques Villeneuve, "le fils" grabbed the checkered flag at Road America as well as the Rookie of the Year honors, and Paul Tracy managed to keep his car off of the walls long enough to score three victories. Add to the list of champions Willowdale's Dave Empringham who claimed his second consecutive Toyota Formula Atlantic crown. Four other Canadian drivers ended their seasons on the second step of the podium. Ron Fellows, for the second year in a row, took the runner-up spot in the Trans-Am series. Toronto's Jeremy Dale missed the championship in the IMSA World Sports Car series by threé points, and Quebec's Bertrand Godin and Christian Vandal finished second in the French Formula Ford ranks and the American Formula 2000 series, respectively. And the Canadians have picked up right where they left off. At this writing Villeneuve and Tracy have one win a piece in the Indy wars, Empringham and Quebecer Patrick Carpentier have claimed three victories between them in Formula Atlantic and British Columbia's "wonder kid," Greg Moore is three for three in the Indy Lights series. The year is just getting started and | think that we will have a lot to cheer for this season, so stay tuned...From e Sunderland Bantam A/E team won the sponsored by Stewart Morrison Insu- am from Thedford.
